SUMMARY:The Seine: The River That Made Paris
DESCRIPTION:Voyage down the Seine with journalist Elaine Sciolino as she explores the history of the beloved Parisian river and the lives it shapes. \nIn the spring of 1978\, as a young journalist in Paris\, Elaine Sciolino was seduced by a river. In The Seine\, she tells the story of that river through its rich history and lively characters—a bargewoman\, a riverbank bookseller\, a houseboat dweller\, a famous cameraman known for capturing the river’s light. She patrols with river police\, rows with a restorer of antique boats\, discovers a champagne vineyard\, and even dares to swim in the Seine. Sciolino’s keen eye and vivid prose bring the river to life as she discovers its origins on a remote plateau of Burgundy\, where a pagan goddess healed pilgrims at an ancient temple. She follows the Seine to Le Havre\, where it meets the sea. Braiding memoir\, travelogue and history through the Seine’s winding route\, Sciolino offers a love letter to Paris and the river at its heart and invites readers to explore its magic. \nA book signing follows the event.

SUMMARY:Villains of History: On Adolf Hitler with Dr. Benjamin Hett and Dr. Gail Saltz
DESCRIPTION:Behind the infamous deeds of history’s most notorious figures lie complex and mysterious human minds. Dr. Gail Saltz\, the author\, psychoanalyst and television commentator\, invites experts and brings her own expertise to bear as she examines the psychology of the villains of history\, including Adolf Hitler. \nWhy did democracy fall apart so quickly and completely in Germany in the 1930s? How did a democratic government allow Adolf Hitler to seize power? What personally drove Hitler to become a dictator and architect of mass genocide? Join Dr. Saltz and Dr. Benjamin Hett for this conversation on how Hitler used populist insurgencies to bring the Nazis to power and how the misguided confidence of conservative politicians resulted in a failure to recognize that their efforts played directly into Hitler’s hands. Hett\, a scholar and gifted storyteller\, will share how Hitler was able to take hold of the government\, the failures of the Weimar Republic and the shortsightedness of German politicians who allowed it to happen.

SUMMARY:Festival Albertine: How Do We Get People to Care
DESCRIPTION:Artists and activists will be called upon to discuss how to change people’s minds and amplify the call to action.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLiterature\, music\, drama—these are key resources for societies trying to come to grips with new realities. In recent years we’ve seen them begin to grapple with climate change\, but that engagement must now grow. The arts have traditionally engaged with what seemed the most dramatic questions: the struggles of one set of human beings with another. That struggle is still underway\, of course\, but now we’ve added something different: the terrifying drama of people with a suddenly angry natural world. How does this new moment redefine what we think about when we take up brush or pen\, camera or keyboard? What is the work of a poet in a world on fire\, or an orchestra in a city where the seas are rising?\n\nWith Irina Brook\, Lauren Groff\, Fabrice Hyber\, and Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky. Moderated by Bill McKibben.

SUMMARY:Built and Never-Built Brooklyn: An Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Join Cornell professor and urbanist Thomas Campanella for an unprecedented journey through the history of our beloved borough via its built environment. In his book Brooklyn: The Once and Future City\, Campanella brings us from sleepy colonial settlements\, to the electric playground of Coney Island\, and everything built in between. In addition to sharing what we’ve built and what we’ve lost\, this epic story highlights some of the never-realized dreams of Brooklynites through time\, from abandoned plans for the world’s tallest building to failed designs to make Jamaica Bay the largest deep-water seaport on Earth. Editor at Curbed Amy Plitt joins Campanella for this urban exploration.

SUMMARY:Sympathy for the Drummer: Why Charlie Watts Matters Book Launch/Signing
DESCRIPTION:Across five decades\, Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts has had the best seat in the house. Charlie Watts\, the anti-rock star—an urbane jazz fan with a dry wit and little taste for the limelight—was witness to the most savage years in rock history\, and emerged a hero\, a warrior poet. Author Mike Edison\, himself a notorious raconteur and accomplished drummer\, tells a tale of respect and satisfaction that goes far beyond drums\, drumming\, and the Rolling Stones\, ripping apart the history of rock’n’roll\, and celebrating sixty years of cultural upheaval. \n

SUMMARY:Philosophy Workshop on Joel Whitebook's Freud: An Intellectual Biography
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Joel Whitebook\, Philosopher and Psychoanalyst\, will discuss his book Freud: An Intellectual Biography. \nCutting through the tired clichés of the “Freud Wars\,” the author presents us with a radically new portrait of the founder of psychoanalysis. Because Whitebook is a philosopher as well as a psychoanalyst\, he has been able to integrate many of the profound transformations that have taken place in psychoanalytic theory and practice\, infant research\, gender studies\, philosophy\, and critical theory since Ernest Jones and Peter Gay published their canonical studies in the last century. Whitebook thereby succeeds in creating an account of Freud’s achievement that speaks to our cultural situation. \nFurthermore\, in addition to presenting the unfolding of Freud’s thinking in the context of the developments in his personal life and in the society at large\, Whitebook has also succeeded in bringing this iconic man to life in compelling fashion. Where Freud often tried to protect himself by hiding behind the forbidding mask of an authoritarian patriarch and unbending rationalist\, we come to see him as the vulnerable\, complex\, and all-too-human person that he was.

SUMMARY:The Jewish Dead in Literature and Lore
DESCRIPTION:What happens when the line between the dead and the living gets transgressed? Join us for a haunting lecture as we explore this gray area in Jewish lore\, literature\, and culture. Hear from Jonathan Boyarin as he delves into examples that are both familiar and not and shows us that though we try to preserve tidy lines separating the dead from the world of the living\, careful borders which delineate our modern reality\, we still remain uneasy. By examining these Jewish ghosts\, we find that our discomfort with the afterlife might in fact result from our insistence on these walls. \nJonathan Boyarin is the Diann G. and Thomas A. Mann Professor of Modern Jewish Studies at Cornell University\, where he teaches in the departments of anthropology and Near Eastern Studies.

SUMMARY:Inflammation and the Keto Diet
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Will Cole and Dan Churchill for a conversation on inflammation and the keto diet. \nAs the international bestselling author of Ketotarian\, co-host of The Goopfellas Podcast\, and leading functional medicine expert\, Dr. Will Cole discovered that inflammation is at the core of most common health problems. In his newest book\, THE INFLAMMATION SPECTRUM: Find Your Food Triggers and Reset Your System\, he reveals this issue exists on a continuum with mild symptoms like weight gain and fatigue on one end and hormone imbalance and autoimmune conditions on the other. What moves you in one direction or another is extremely personal. One person’s food medicine is another person’s food trigger. \nDuring this panel discussion\, Dr. Cole and Dan Churchill\, the chef of Under Armour and co-founder of Charley St in NYC\, will teach you how to combat inflammation and put you on a permanent path towards healing.  Other panel topics include: the keto diet (regular and plant based)\, intermittent fasting and hormone effects in women.

SUMMARY:Antisocial: Andrew Marantz (Author Event)
DESCRIPTION:In the Rare Book Room at The Strand bookstore\, author (and staff writer at The New Yorker) Andrew Marantz will discuss his new book\, Antisocial: Online Extremists\, Techno-Utopians\, and the Hijacking of the American Conversation. \nAntisocial reveals how the boundaries between technology\, media\, and politics have been erased\, resulting in a deeply broken informational landscape–the landscape in which we all now live. Marantz shows how alienated young people are led down the rabbit hole of online radicalization\, and how fringe ideas spread–from anonymous corners of social media to cable TV to the President’s Twitter feed. Marantz also sits with the creators of social media as they start to reckon with the forces they’ve unleashed. Will they be able to solve the communication crisis they helped bring about\, or are their interventions too little too late?

SUMMARY:Primo Levi and Friendship in the Camp
DESCRIPTION:Uri Cohen: Affection and Survival: Primo Levi and Friendship in the Camp \nAffection is a lesser known aspect of the human and Jewish experience in the camps. Mostly it is related to the fractured past of which the camp is the present. Having written some of the essential pages on the human experience in the Lager\, Primo Levi continued contemplating and writing about it throughout his life. This talk will question affection in Levi’s writing and its place in the camp as a strategy of survival. Affection saves\, but it also prompts Levi’s internal inquiry that leads to the heart of his defining conceptual innovation: the Gray Zone. \nUri S. Cohen holds a PhD. from the Hebrew University and has served on the faculty of Columbia University (2004-2011).
