SUMMARY:Domesticating Ulysses: The Novel’s Surprising Economy\, with Robert Seidman
DESCRIPTION:Yes\, Joyce’s masterwork can be intimidating\, but there are brief passages—sometimes just a sentence or two—that encapsulate the novel’s ambitious scope.  On Ground Hog’s Day eve\, James Joyce’s 138th birthday\, Robert Seidman will suggest several of the most enticing of these gems along with several other approachable\, funny\, erotic and immediately enjoyable passages. SUMMARY:Jessica Valenti and Jaclyn Friedman: Believe Me
DESCRIPTION:Harvey Weinstein. Brett Kavanaugh. Jeffrey Epstein. Donald Trump. The most infamous abusers in modern American history are being outed as women speak up to publicly expose behavior that was previously only whispered about — and it’s both making an impact\, and sparking a backlash. From the leading\, agenda-setting feminist editors of Yes Means Yes\, Believe Me brings readers into the evolving landscape of the movement against sexual violence\, and outlines how trusting women is the critical foundation for future progress. \nIn Believe Me\, contributors ask and answer the crucial question: What would happen if we didn’t just believe women\, but acted as though they matter? If we take women’s experiences of online harassment seriously\, it will transform the internet. If we listen to and center survivors\, we could revolutionize our systems of justice. If we believe Black women when they talk about pain\, we will save countless lives. \nMoira Donegan is a writer and feminist living in New York. SUMMARY:Philippe Lançon on Disturbance: Surviving Charlie Hebdo
DESCRIPTION:Writer and Charlie Hebdo columnist Philippe Lançon survived the last day of his life—January 7\, 2015. But his jaw\, mangled by a terrorist’s bullet\, required countless operations and long hospital stays to repair. Throughout months of reconstructive surgeries\, he turned to Kafka\, Mann\, and Proust to better understand who he’s become and remember who he was before the attack. \nDisturbance: Surviving Charlie Hebdo\, translated from the French by Steven Rendall\, is Lançon’s powerful and award-winning memoir of his grueling medical struggle and emotional recovery. As part of his first U.S. tour\, he will speak to writer Dinaw Mengestu and Michael Reynolds\, editor-in-chief of Europa Editions\, about why literature was an essential part of his remarkable and transformative journey.

SUMMARY:The Big Thaw: Ancient Carbon\, Modern Science\, and a Race to Save the World
DESCRIPTION:Permafrost—dark\, ice-flaked\, permanently frozen ground that lies under tundra and boreal forests across our northern regions—covers more than 12 percent of the earth’s land surface. It exists in places that seem otherworldly and unimaginably remote to most of us\, but the changes taking place in the permafrost layer may ultimately affect the lives of every person on Earth. \nThe permafrost layer contains a vast store of ancient carbon\, more than four times the quantity found in all of today’s forests. It is like a ticking “carbon bomb”\, releasing carbon dioxide and methane as the permafrost thaws. Braving hordes of mosquitoes\, quicksand\, and extreme temperatures\, researchers are racing against the clock to educate us about the changes we must make to preserve Earth’s carbon balance. \nArctic scientist Max Holmes and photographer Chris Linder will share stories about their work studying and photographing thawing permafrost in Siberia and the Arctic. Their new book The Big Thaw: Ancient Carbon\, Modern Science\, and a Race to Save the World will be available for purchase and signing after the presentation.

SUMMARY:Unmasking Mengele
DESCRIPTION:One of the most notorious war criminals of all time\, Dr. Josef Mengele has come to symbolize both the evil of the Nazi regime and the failure of justice in the postwar world. \nDrawing on new scholarship and sources\, historian David G. Marwell examines Mengele’s life and career\, chronicling his university studies\, which led to two PhDs and a promising career as a scientist; his wartime service\, in combat and at Auschwitz\, where his “selections” determined the fate of countless innocents and his “scientific” pursuits resulted in the traumatization and death of thousands more; and his postwar refuge in Germany and South America. Mengele describes the international search in 1985\, which ended in a cemetery in São Paulo\, Brazil\, and the dogged forensic investigation that produced overwhelming evidence that Mengele had died—but failed to convince those who\, arguably\, most wanted him dead. This is a story of science without limits\, escape without freedom\, and resolution without justice. \nA book signing follows the event.

SUMMARY:Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment Is Killing America's Heartland
DESCRIPTION:With the rise of the Tea Party and the election of Donald Trump\, many middle- and lower-income white Americans threw their support behind conservative politicians who pledged to make life great again for people like them. As Jonathan Metzl shows\, the right-wing policies that resulted from this white backlash put these voters’ very health at risk—and in the end\, threaten everyone’s well-being. Having interviewed a range of Americans\, he uncovers how racial anxieties led to the repeal of gun control laws in Missouri\, stymied the Affordable Care Act in Tennessee\, and fueled massive cuts to schools and social services in Kansas. Although such measures promised to restore greatness to white America\, Metzl’s systematic analysis of health data dramatically reveals they did just the opposite: these policies made life sicker\, harder\, and shorter in the very populations they purported to aid. Thus\, white gun suicides soared\, life expectancies fell\, and school dropout rates rose. Based on his new book of the same title\, Metzl’s talk demonstrates just how much white America would benefit by emphasizing cooperation\, rather than by chasing false promises of supremacy. \nAbout the Speaker \nJonathan Metzl is the Frederick B. Rentschler II Professor of Sociology and Psychiatry\, and the Director of the Center for Medicine\, Health\, and Society\, at Vanderbilt University in Nashville\, Tennessee.

SUMMARY:Book Launch for Seven Sisters and a Brother—Untold Truths Behind Black Student Activism in the 1960s
DESCRIPTION:Untold Truths Behind Black Student Activism in the 1960s: Marilyn Allman Maye\, Harold S. Buchanan\, Jannette O. Domingo and Marilyn Holifield with Brent Staples \n\n\n\n\nHenry Louis Gates\, Jr. has called Seven Sisters and a Brother “compelling portraits of the lives of the young people who risked their futures to make a difference.” \nFour of the eight authors will sit down with Brent Staples of the New York Times to discuss their experiences as activists in an elite liberal arts college in the 1960s. When the eight students at Swarthmore College demanded a Black Studies curriculum and protested the decreased enrollment and hiring of African Americans in 1969\, the peaceful protest was misreported through a negative lens. This long overdue choral memoir chronicles their eight-day sit-in. It is a story of great relevance at a time in which first-generation college students and millennial activists have demonstrated a desire for increased political engagement. According to Congresswoman Donna Shalala\, “Theirs is a story of the power of collective action\, the value of shared identity\, and the thrill of progress.” \nA book signing follows the event.
