SUMMARY:Jason Haber – Futurecity: A Look at the Past\, Present\, and Future of NYC and Cities Around the World
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in history\, more people live in cities than in rural areas. By 2050\, another 2 billion people will occupancy our planet\, with two-thirds of them living in cities. While we have reached unprecedented population growth\, our planet is under siege and many of our cities\, including our own\, are ill-prepared for the coming storm. From climate change\, infrastructure\, housing\, health care and transportation\, cities will face historic challenges to meet the demands of the 21st century. How do cities meet these challenges and thrive in the face of them? In FutureCity\, Jason takes the audience through the history of cities\, and explores contemporary issues that are key to their survival and success. For New York\, this requires a further embrace of Jane Jacobs\, while moving on from the cen-centric policies of Robert Moses. \nJason Haber is a serial and social entrepreneur.

SUMMARY:Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment Is Killing America's Heartland
DESCRIPTION:With the rise of the Tea Party and the election of Donald Trump\, many middle- and lower-income white Americans threw their support behind conservative politicians who pledged to make life great again for people like them. As Jonathan Metzl shows\, the right-wing policies that resulted from this white backlash put these voters’ very health at risk—and in the end\, threaten everyone’s well-being. Having interviewed a range of Americans\, he uncovers how racial anxieties led to the repeal of gun control laws in Missouri\, stymied the Affordable Care Act in Tennessee\, and fueled massive cuts to schools and social services in Kansas. Although such measures promised to restore greatness to white America\, Metzl’s systematic analysis of health data dramatically reveals they did just the opposite: these policies made life sicker\, harder\, and shorter in the very populations they purported to aid. Thus\, white gun suicides soared\, life expectancies fell\, and school dropout rates rose. Based on his new book of the same title\, Metzl’s talk demonstrates just how much white America would benefit by emphasizing cooperation\, rather than by chasing false promises of supremacy. \nAbout the Speaker \nJonathan Metzl is the Frederick B. Rentschler II Professor of Sociology and Psychiatry\, and the Director of the Center for Medicine\, Health\, and Society\, at Vanderbilt University in Nashville\, Tennessee.

SUMMARY:Adam Davidson and Ariel Levy in Conversation: The Passion Economy
DESCRIPTION:NPR’s Planet Money creator and award-winning New Yorker staff writer Adam Davidson stops by to reassure us that the middle class isn’t dying and robots are not stealing our jobs. \nHe explains how our feelings of dislocation\, confusion\, even panic result from a lack of understanding\, and he counters them with clarity and insights from his new book The Passion Economy: The New Rules for Thriving in the Twenty-First Century. Davidson discusses how the 20th century economy of scale has given way to a century of economy of passion—one full of new ways of making money\, nontraditional paths toward professional fulfillment\, and unprecedented opportunities for combining our careers with the things that bring us joy. An optimistic take on our economic future with stories about those who have cracked the code to success—don’t miss it.

SUMMARY:Saad Amer: Climate Action: Why Collective Action is The Answer
DESCRIPTION:With wildfires in California\, devastating hurricanes across the Atlantic\, and record temperatures across the US\, climate change is more visible than ever. Despite the billions of dollars in damages and lives lost this last year\, the US is moving backward in climate policy. While individual actions can make a difference\, systematic change is essential in dealing with the Climate Crisis\, especially given its impact on marginalized communities\, human health\, inequality and the economy. This talk\, featuring Saad Amer\, will focus on the why voting is essential\, how we can organize our communities\, and how we can turn the momentum on climate into a movement to the polls come 2020. \nSaad Amer is an environmentalist\, activist and the Founder of Plus1Vote\, an organization dedicated to improving voter turnout and improving representation in our democracy.

SUMMARY:Yogishri and Bijan Sabet: Investing in Letting Go
DESCRIPTION:In the business world\, success is equated with material gain. The premise of venture capitalist Bijan Sabet’s business is to invest in order to earn more\, and his early investment in digital platforms like Twitter and Tumblr could be described as prescient. But does this type of success yield happiness? In their first time meeting together\, the whizz investor Sabet and the Himalayan spiritual master Yogishri will search for what happiness we can hope to find beyond cashing in.

SUMMARY:History Behind the Headlines: Socialism
DESCRIPTION:Embraced by some\, deplored by others\, misunderstood by many\, socialism is back and it’s a hot topic in presidential politics. With younger voters increasingly supporting socialism\, the growing movement is changing the national conversation and potentially\, the Democratic party. But when a recent Gallup poll asked Americans what socialism actually is\, answers varied wildly. Columbia Journalism School Director of Academic Affairs\, and former Editor-in-Chief of The Forward Jane Eisner sits down with an all-star panel to discuss socialism today\, its complicated past\, and how New York’s predominantly Jewish socialist movement paved the way for change a century ago. She is joined by University of Wisconsin-Madison Professor of American Jewish History\, Tony Michels; Washington Post columnist\, Catherine Rampell; New York Post columnist\, Karol Markowicz; and former Deputy Director of the Democratic Socialists of America\, David Duhalde.

SUMMARY:Villains of History: On Adolf Hitler with Dr. Benjamin Hett and Dr. Gail Saltz
DESCRIPTION:Behind the infamous deeds of history’s most notorious figures lie complex and mysterious human minds. Dr. Gail Saltz\, the author\, psychoanalyst and television commentator\, invites experts and brings her own expertise to bear as she examines the psychology of the villains of history\, including Adolf Hitler. \nWhy did democracy fall apart so quickly and completely in Germany in the 1930s? How did a democratic government allow Adolf Hitler to seize power? What personally drove Hitler to become a dictator and architect of mass genocide? Join Dr. Saltz and Dr. Benjamin Hett for this conversation on how Hitler used populist insurgencies to bring the Nazis to power and how the misguided confidence of conservative politicians resulted in a failure to recognize that their efforts played directly into Hitler’s hands. Hett\, a scholar and gifted storyteller\, will share how Hitler was able to take hold of the government\, the failures of the Weimar Republic and the shortsightedness of German politicians who allowed it to happen.

SUMMARY:Redlining and its Repercussions
DESCRIPTION:Redlining—the systematically racist banking practice of denying loans to people of color in post-WWII urban neighborhoods—is often portrayed as a closed chapter in the nation’s history of structural inequality. Yet intense discrimination persists as non-white communities face continuous exclusion from the “American Dream” of homeownership\, or are targeted by predatory lending practices\, further widening the racial wealth gap. SUMMARY:Alienated America by Tim Carney
DESCRIPTION:During the 2016 presidential campaign\, Donald J. Trump proclaimed\, “The American Dream is dead\,” a message that resonated across the country. Washington Examiner editor Timothy Carney traveled around Middle America and had a startling revelation: life seems to be getting worse because citizens are facing their problems alone. Join Carney as he talks about his new book Alienated America and explains why failing social connections — as evidenced by declining numbers in marriage\, voting\, church attendance\, and volunteer work — are responsible for the great divide in America. He will present a framework for leading us out of the wilderness. It will change the way you look at the challenges facing modern America.

SUMMARY:Skirball Talks | Slavoj Žižek: Disorder Under Heaven
DESCRIPTION:As part of NYU Skirball Talks\, the NYU Department of German and Deutsches Haus at NYU present “Disorder under Heaven” with Slavoj Žižek. \nInternational relations\, in biotechnology\, in sexual relations…But it is here that we should remember Mao’s old motto: “There is great disorder under heaven\, so the situation is excellent!” Let’s not lose nerves\, let’s exploit the confusion as a chance to propose a new radical vision. In January 2019\, an international team of scientists proposed “a diet it says can improve health while ensuring sustainable food production to reduce further damage to the planet.” We are talking about a radical reorganization of our entire food production and distribution—so how to do it? Is it not clear that a strong global agency is needed with the power to coordinate such measures? And is not such an agency pointing in the direction of what we once called “Communism”? And does the same not hold for other threats to our survival as humans? Is a similar global agency not needed also to deal with the problem of increasing numbers of refugees and immigrants\, with the problem of digital control over our lives? Let’s not be afraid to tackle the problem of the new order that the ongoing disorder is calling for. \nSlavoj Žižek will be introduced by Xudong Zhang\, Professor of Comparative Literature & East Asian Studies\, and Director of China House at NYU.

SUMMARY:The Science of Sex Differences—A (Bar) Talk by Dr. Diana Santos Fleischman
DESCRIPTION:From radical feminism to the manosphere\, from Delusions of Gender to the Google Memo\, there is a culture war about sex differences. Are men’s and women’s minds virtually identical or are they as far apart as Mars and Venus? Do sex differences exist above and beyond cultural dictates on what is masculine and feminine?  What can we learn from gender-egalitarian cultures and evolution? What implications do sex differences have on everything from the orgasm gap to the wage gap? In this talk\, Diana Santos Fleischman will address the controversial idea that sex differences have a pervasive influence on society and equality using evidence from psychology\, biology\, sociology and economics. \n\nDiana Santos Fleischman PhD is an associate professor in evolutionary psychology.

SUMMARY:Defending Our Republic: A Conversation with Burt Neuborne
DESCRIPTION:Upon exiting the Constitutional Convention\, a bystander reportedly asked Benjamin Franklin what kind of government the delegates had created. “A republic\,” he said\, “if you can keep it.” Since the 2016 election and amid the unnerving events of the Trump presidency\, many Americans have begun to wonder: Can we keep it? \nIn his new book\, When at Times the Mob Is Swayed\, noted civil liberties lawyer Burt Neuborne examines the structure of our constitutional system and its ability to withstand authoritarianism. Thanks to its built-in resilience\, he argues\, the Constitution will ultimately survive current attempts to undermine it. But only an active citizenry will allow us to fulfill Ben Franklin’s charge to keep our republic. \nIn partnership with NYU School of Law\, we will explore the questions and challenges of this moment. How durable is the Constitution’s separation of powers? Can our institutions withstand the threats of Trump’s federal regime? What must the American public do to defend and revitalize our system of government? \nBurt Neuborne\, Norman Dorsen Professor of Civil Liberties at NYU School of Law; Founding Legal Director\, Brennan Center for Justice; author of When at Times the Mob Is Swayed: A Citizen’s Guide to Defending Our Republic\n\nRachel Barkow\, Vice Dean and Segal Family Professor of Regulatory Law and Policy\, NYU School of Law \nAdam Samaha\, Inez Milholland Professor of Civil Liberties\, NYU School of Law

SUMMARY:Fighting the Future: Ethics and Algorithms
DESCRIPTION:At different stages of the criminal justice system\, from policing\, bail hearings\, and sentencing\, computerized algorithms are replacing human decision-making in determining where to police\, who to arrest\, who goes to jail\, and who goes free. This Olio\, led by Barry Lam\, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Vassar College\, will introduce people to how these algorithms work\, the under-appreciated moral problems with their implementation\, and how the future of criminal justice depends on decisions we make now about the risks we are willing to tolerate for public safety.

SUMMARY:Reading Politics with the New Republic: The Rigged Game
DESCRIPTION:America was built on the idea that those who work hard can achieve great success. But what happens to the people who don’t win in this new economy? Is the new elite fueling inequality\, widening the gap between rich and poor\, locking a new class system into place – and getting burned out itself in the process? This event at Symphony Space tackles these questions with authors Daniel Markovits\, Barbara Ehrenreich\, civil rights advocate Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw\, and social commentator Fran Lebowitz. Moderated by The New Republic contributor\, Sarah Leonard.

SUMMARY:David Abraham Presents: Immigrant Integration and Social Solidarity in Pluralist Welfare States
DESCRIPTION:Social solidarity is a key element of redistributive welfare states. Such solidarity is\, however\, not a given and must be built through political\, legal\, economic and cultural means. Each of the agents of that solidarity has weakened over the past generation: social democratic parties\, legislatures\, trade unions\, and the various institutions that create a shared national culture. With the austerity of neo-liberalism\, the growth of migration of various sorts\, and the emergence of identitarian politics\, we have moved from “what belongs to whom” to “who belongs to us.” \nIn this presentation\, David Abraham (Emeritus Professor of Law at the University of Miami) will review and assess each of these developments for Germany and for the U.S. and then examine the prospects for immigrant integration policies that might build or rebuild solidarity.

SUMMARY:Shadows of Doubt: Brendan O’Flaherty and Rajiv Sethi
DESCRIPTION:Crimes and punishments take place under pressure and often with uncertainty. Offenders\, victims\, police\, judges\, and jurors make high-stakes decisions with limited information\, under severe time pressure. With compelling stories and extensive data on how people behave in the heat of the moment\, Shadows of Doubt: Stereotypes\, Crime\, and the Pursuit of Justice reveals the extent to which we rely on stereotypes as shortcuts in our decision making. Join co-authors Brendan (Dan) O’Flaherty and Rajiv Sethi\, along with Morgan C. Williams\, Jr.\, at the NYPL for a discussion about the role stereotypes play in the the justice system.
