SUMMARY:The Big Thaw: Ancient Carbon\, Modern Science\, and a Race to Save the World
DESCRIPTION:Permafrost—dark\, ice-flaked\, permanently frozen ground that lies under tundra and boreal forests across our northern regions—covers more than 12 percent of the earth’s land surface. It exists in places that seem otherworldly and unimaginably remote to most of us\, but the changes taking place in the permafrost layer may ultimately affect the lives of every person on Earth. \nThe permafrost layer contains a vast store of ancient carbon\, more than four times the quantity found in all of today’s forests. It is like a ticking “carbon bomb”\, releasing carbon dioxide and methane as the permafrost thaws. Braving hordes of mosquitoes\, quicksand\, and extreme temperatures\, researchers are racing against the clock to educate us about the changes we must make to preserve Earth’s carbon balance. \nArctic scientist Max Holmes and photographer Chris Linder will share stories about their work studying and photographing thawing permafrost in Siberia and the Arctic. Their new book The Big Thaw: Ancient Carbon\, Modern Science\, and a Race to Save the World will be available for purchase and signing after the presentation.

SUMMARY:Saad Amer: Climate Action: Why Collective Action is The Answer
DESCRIPTION:With wildfires in California\, devastating hurricanes across the Atlantic\, and record temperatures across the US\, climate change is more visible than ever. Despite the billions of dollars in damages and lives lost this last year\, the US is moving backward in climate policy. While individual actions can make a difference\, systematic change is essential in dealing with the Climate Crisis\, especially given its impact on marginalized communities\, human health\, inequality and the economy. This talk\, featuring Saad Amer\, will focus on the why voting is essential\, how we can organize our communities\, and how we can turn the momentum on climate into a movement to the polls come 2020. \nSaad Amer is an environmentalist\, activist and the Founder of Plus1Vote\, an organization dedicated to improving voter turnout and improving representation in our democracy.

SUMMARY:Secret Science Club Presents Marine Biologist & Explorer David Gruber
DESCRIPTION:Just returned from an expedition exploring the frigid waters underneath the ice in Greenland\, David Gruber typically spends about two months of the year conducting undersea research—scuba diving or riding in tiny submersible vehicles that allow him to spend hours below the surface. \nDr. Gruber tries to see the ocean through the eyes of sea creatures and lately\, he’s particularly interested in how these animals communicate. He asks: Can we learn how to talk to whales using artificial intelligence? What are fish “saying” with biofluoresence and bioluminescence? How can we use new technology to understand undersea species? \nDavid Gruber is a marine biologist and professor at Baruch College at the City University of New York and CUNY Graduate Center. He is an Explorer for National Geographic and a researcher at the American Museum of Natural History.

SUMMARY:The Human Swarm: How Our Societies Arise\, Thrive\, and Fall
DESCRIPTION:What are societies? What keeps them together and tears them apart?\n\n\n\nA New Yorker can fly to Los Angeles–or Borneo–with little fear. But\, If a chimpanzee ventures into the territory of a different group\, it will almost certainly be killed. \n\n\n\n\n\nPsychologists have done little to explain this: For years\, they have held that our biology puts a hard upper limit of about 150 people on the size of our social groups. But human societies are\, in fact\, vastly larger.\n\n\n\nHow do we manage—by and large—to get along with each other?\n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Dr. Mark W. Moffett will discuss how sprawling\, highly complex societies have been created and what it takes to sustain them. He will examine the social adaptations that bind the members to their societies and explores how the tension between identity and anonymity defines how those groups work—and sometimes don’t.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker \n\n\nDr. Mark W. Moffett\, also known as “Doctor Bugs\,” the Indiana Jones of Entomology\,” “The Martha Stewart of dirt\,” and “the Jane Goodall of ants” is a Photographer and a Biologist.

SUMMARY:Festival Albertine: How Do We Get People to Care
DESCRIPTION:Artists and activists will be called upon to discuss how to change people’s minds and amplify the call to action.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLiterature\, music\, drama—these are key resources for societies trying to come to grips with new realities. In recent years we’ve seen them begin to grapple with climate change\, but that engagement must now grow. The arts have traditionally engaged with what seemed the most dramatic questions: the struggles of one set of human beings with another. That struggle is still underway\, of course\, but now we’ve added something different: the terrifying drama of people with a suddenly angry natural world. How does this new moment redefine what we think about when we take up brush or pen\, camera or keyboard? What is the work of a poet in a world on fire\, or an orchestra in a city where the seas are rising?\n\nWith Irina Brook\, Lauren Groff\, Fabrice Hyber\, and Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky. Moderated by Bill McKibben.

SUMMARY:AMNH Presents: SciCafe: Climate Change and Rising Sea Levels
DESCRIPTION:The ongoing pollution of our atmosphere with an invisible odorless gas called carbon dioxide is trapping heat at the Earth’s surface and causing temperatures to rise on land and in the ocean. The polar regions are warming fastest of all and the melting ice sheets are causing sea levels to rise around the globe. How fast climate changes in the future will depend on our collective actions as individuals\, families\, communities\, and governments. In this presentation\, paleoclimatologist Maureen Raymo will review evidence for climate change\, natural and manmade\, and explore how ice sheets and sea level changed in the past.

SUMMARY:Buddhism and Cosmic Ecology
DESCRIPTION:“Buddhism and Cosmic Ecology” with Rev. Donald Castro and Bernadette Giblin \nRev. Donald Castro will explain his theory by using basic concepts from Buddhist teachings\, such as the First Noble Truth; which explains how our emotions range from mild to extreme\, from merely unpleasant to real suffering. He will expand this to talk about the suffering brought upon Mother Earth by we humans who now must struggle to find ways to live in harmony with our environment. \nMs. Bernadette Giblin will share her journey of bringing personal insights and awareness to healing Mother Earth and how the Buddha’s Golden Chain of Love that stretches around the World lives in all plants and soil that adorn our home planet.

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing: Seeking Wellness Through Nature
DESCRIPTION:In Japan\, the practice of shinrin-yoku\, or “forest bathing” is hailed for its therapeutic effects. Proponents believe that by simply immersing ourselves in the atmosphere of a forest\, we can soak in the healing power of trees. In a fast-paced world\, forest bathing is a chance to be mindful of our surroundings\, and to connect with nature through our senses. \nAt this talk\, Dr. Yoshifumi Miyazaki\, former deputy director of Chiba University’s Center for Environment\, Health\, and Field Sciences and author of Shinrin Yoku: The Japanese Art of Forest Bathing\, examines the scientific evidence behind the concept of forest bathing and its potential to enhance wellness and happiness. Discover how you can connect with nature through this Japanese tradition\, wherever you live. \nIn Japanese with English interpretation. Followed by a book signing reception.

SUMMARY:Masters of Social Gastronomy: The Science and History of Plant Milks
DESCRIPTION:Each month\, Masters of Social Gastronomy takes on a curious food topic and breaks down the history and science behind it. This month\, we’re guzzling PLANT MILKS. \nIf you survived the Great Oat Milk Shortage of ‘18\, you are probably curious why we so thirsty for non-dairy milks. We’ll look at the surprisingly long history of almond and soy milk\, sharing historical recipes and tracing their rise as the OG alternate milks in America. Then\, we’ll learn which inanimate objects you’re free to milk and which will resist milkification\, and if it doesn’t come from a cow\, can we call it a milk at all? We’ll also check out each milk’s pros and cons for both your health and the environment. \nBonus: join us for a massive milk tasting\, including a homemade mystery milk! \nDubbed a “historic gastronomist\,” Sarah Lohman recreates historic recipes as a way to make a personal connection with the past. She chronicles her explorations in culinary history on her blog\, Four Pounds Flour\, and her work has been featured in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. She appears on the Cooking Channel’s Food: Fact or Fiction? and is 1/2 of the Masters of Social Gastronomy with co-founder Jonathan Soma. \nSoma was born in the South\, is what someone from the North would say. He cooks for fun\, codes for hire\, and has more hobbies than can dance on the head of a pin. His work has been featured everywhere from Gawker to The New York Times.
