SUMMARY:Wave Farm Works in Progress Workshop with Milad Mozari
DESCRIPTION:This workshop\, led by Wave Farm resident Milad Mozari\, combines methods in sound recording and Particle brand development boards to survey open spaces and large structures on Governors Island. Participants will explore field recording experiments using indoor and outdoor field recording techniques\, environmental data\, and layers of a location. Through these experiments\, we will notice patterns in the rage\, resolution\, and reflection rate in certain built structures that will open a dialogue and allow participants to experience Governors Island on a different frequency. \n\n\nThis event will take place off-site at Governors Island\, Nolan Park 8B\, which is accessible via ferry from Manhattan and Brooklyn.

SUMMARY:Masters of Social Gastronomy: The Science and History of Plant Milks
DESCRIPTION:Each month\, Masters of Social Gastronomy takes on a curious food topic and breaks down the history and science behind it. This month\, we’re guzzling PLANT MILKS. \nIf you survived the Great Oat Milk Shortage of ‘18\, you are probably curious why we so thirsty for non-dairy milks. We’ll look at the surprisingly long history of almond and soy milk\, sharing historical recipes and tracing their rise as the OG alternate milks in America. Then\, we’ll learn which inanimate objects you’re free to milk and which will resist milkification\, and if it doesn’t come from a cow\, can we call it a milk at all? We’ll also check out each milk’s pros and cons for both your health and the environment. \nBonus: join us for a massive milk tasting\, including a homemade mystery milk! \nDubbed a “historic gastronomist\,” Sarah Lohman recreates historic recipes as a way to make a personal connection with the past. She chronicles her explorations in culinary history on her blog\, Four Pounds Flour\, and her work has been featured in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. She appears on the Cooking Channel’s Food: Fact or Fiction? and is 1/2 of the Masters of Social Gastronomy with co-founder Jonathan Soma. \nSoma was born in the South\, is what someone from the North would say. He cooks for fun\, codes for hire\, and has more hobbies than can dance on the head of a pin. His work has been featured everywhere from Gawker to The New York Times.

SUMMARY:Birding in Peace at Green-Wood
DESCRIPTION:Before the Green-Wood gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the birds that make Green-Wood their home – at least temporarily. By September\, offspring of these nesting birds will be on their own. Returning warblers will be in their less flamboyant fall plumage. Large numbers of blackbirds\, flycatchers\, sparrows\, vireos\, and swallows will also be passing through. By October\, waterfowl are returning\, and we’ll look for raptors heading south. November will bring back our overwintering feathered denizens from the north.

SUMMARY:Shinrin-Yoku: Forest Bathing in Central Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Cultured Forest for two hours of guided Forest Bathing in the North Woods of Central Park. Forest Bathing is based on a Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku that involves connecting with nature by “Bathing in the Forest Atmosphere”. Studies show time in nature lowers blood pressure\, boosts immunity and reduces stress. In this activity\, you will indulge with fellow nature lovers in relaxing mindfulness and self-care in a guided outdoor class. Plan to see some of the most natural settings of the park\, while learning activities that allow you to better connect with yourself and the outdoors. Leave feeling centered\, connected and more at peace. We are excited to end this session with a tea ceremony. Attendees must be 14 years or older. This will require about a mile of hiking with some stairs and walking up and down steep inclines and over rocks.

SUMMARY:Secret Science Club Presents Entomologist Jessica Ware
DESCRIPTION:Strange\, beautiful\, overlooked\, and essential—insects are the foundation of Earth’s ecosystems\, representing 80 percent of all animal species. The next Secret Science Club lecture will feature entomologist Dr. Jessica Ware and will explore the “creepy\, crawly residents of nature’s demi-monde.” \nDr. Jessica Ware studies the amazing modern-day behaviors of insects\, as well as their deep evolutionary origins. Ancestors of the wee beasties that Dr. Ware specializes in—dragonflies—were the first creatures on Earth to take to the air over 400 million years ago. Flash forward: Today there are more than 80 species of dragonflies in NYC alone. They can fly up\, down\, forwards\, backwards—and migrate thousands of miles. \nBefore & After \n–Raise your glass (and your antennae) to incredible insects with our cocktail of the night\, the Love Bug! \n–Groove to six-legged tunes \n–Stick around for the buzzin’ Q&A
