SUMMARY:The Enigma of Life: Confronting Marvels at the Edges of Science
DESCRIPTION:Einstein famously claimed that “the most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible.” This statement suggests that no amount of scientific explanation will suffice to make sense of the bizarre situation of the human mind within the universe. So what is the actual role of awe and wonder within the framework of contemporary science? How\, for instance\, do awe and wonder inform scientists’ understanding of the phenomena they are researching? What aspects of contemporary science are more likely to elicit wonder\, and why? Is science rechanneling our innate thirst for knowledge and understanding toward more concrete and palpable realities\, or is it aggravating the tension between truth and meaning by revealing the scope of our ignorance when it comes to probing the ultimate nature of reality? \nPhysicist Marcelo Gleiser\, experimental psychologist Tania Lombrozo\, and physician Gavin Francis analyze the impact of awe and wonder on their own work and on the mindsets of their colleagues carrying out cutting-edge scientific research.   \n*Reception to follow \nLivestream\nThis event also will be available via a free Livestream.

SUMMARY:Stoa Nova: Prosochē or Not Prosochē? On Stoic Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:Do the Stoics engage in mindfulness? Is it similar to the practice from the Buddhist tradition? Is it useful? What is “mindfulness” anyway? \nJoin us and find out why the answers to these questions may make a difference in how you practice Stoicism. Or live your life. \nSuggested reading: https://www.patreon.com/posts/prosoche-or-not-30083645 \nFREE for members. $5 for non-members. \n\nHosted by philosopher Massimo Pigliucci\, Stoa Nova is inspired (with a bit of immodesty) to the ancient Greco-Roman schools of philosophy. Plato\, Aristotle\, Epicurus\, Epictetus and many others simply gave lectures about their favorite topics and engaged in Socratic discussions with people interested in what they had to say. In our case\, we will examine the theory and practice of Stoicism as a modern applied philosophy that aids us in navigating a world in some ways just as confusing and uncertain as that of ancient Athens and Rome.

SUMMARY:The Hard Problem of Consciousness: Philosophical Discussion\, TED Circle
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, one of the toughest nuts to crack in both philosophy and science has been the so-called “hard problem of consciousness”: How is it possible for the hard-wiring of our brain to produce inner perception\, sentient experience\, and self-awareness? \nIt’s a much more difficult conundrum to solve than one might expect upon first glance. \nBecause science is inherently objective\, while consciousness is subjective\, it has been very difficult for experts working from both sides of the divide to bridge this gap – to explain the precise mechanisms of conscious experience. \nBefore arriving at this event\, take a peek at the following video: \n“How Do You Explain Consciousness?” – David Chalmers – https://youtu.be/uhRhtFFhNzQ \nA brief presentation will be given to start this event – summarizing some of the prevailing research and viewpoints on the Hard Problem of Consciousness. \nWe will then explore a number of interesting extensions of this topic together. \nPLEASE FEEL FREE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ACTIVE DISCUSSION\, OR SIMPLY COME TO LISTEN – based upon your own comfort level with this topic and its many facets. This is a highly complex subject\, and everyone is most welcome to join us at this event!

SUMMARY:How to Keep Your Cool
DESCRIPTION:In his essay “On Anger\,” the Roman Stoic thinker Seneca argues that anger is the most destructive passion. \nThis lecture\, from James Romm\, editor\, translator\, and Professor of Classics at Bard College offers us a timeless guide to avoiding and managing anger. It vividly illustrates why the emotion is so dangerous and why controlling it would bring vast benefits to individuals and society. \nSeneca’s thoughts on anger have never been more relevant than today\, when uncivil discourse has increasingly infected public debate. Whether seeking personal growth or political renewal\, readers will find\, in Seneca’s wisdom\, a valuable antidote to the ills of an angry age. \nA book signing follows the event.

SUMMARY:Jeanne Proust Discusses Time at the Strand Bookstore
DESCRIPTION:Jeanne Proust aptly discusses the concept of ‘Time’ through a philosophical lens. \nTime appears as one of these concepts impossible to define\, nor to perceive as such. Augustine writes\, “What then is time? If no one asks me\, I know; if I want to explain it to a questioner\, I do not know”. Indeed\, though impossible to deny its existence\, since it seems to be part of the necessary framework (with space) in which we can perceive at all\, time cannot be accurately described. None of our 5 senses perceives it: we don’t see\, hear\, touch time. Even if time is intimately experienced\, impossible to get out of\, and an essential dimension of our experience and existence\, it still is extremely difficult to think about it\, grasp it – and certainly\, to control it. \nHow do we experience time passing? What is the past\, the present and the future\, and how does our conception of them shape the way we behave and think? The irreversibility\, the ephemerality of time is at the core of our existence – as is our mortality\, our very finitude. \nTeacher: Jeanne Proust\nJeanne Proust’s research focuses on Théodule Ribot’s Diseases of the Will\, both in philosophical and psychological perspectives. While teaching at different universities here in New York\, Jeanne is advocating for a widening of philosophical education beyond the academic frontiers.

SUMMARY:Thomas More's Utopia
DESCRIPTION:Using Thomas More’s Utopia as our foundation\, we’ll examine our own state of mental and emotional health in present day society during this living room Olio event with professor Patricia Kim. \nWhy does the future look so bleak? And what does that have to do with the state of our individual and collective mental health? \nMuch of the dialogue in this Olio will be about our own state of mental and emotional affairs. History is a collection of traumatic events that have been scripted in human blood and mortality and we have all been dropped into its narrative miasma. This makes for a great deal of stress that we will collectively take on in an ad hoc group therapy modality. We will use Thomas More’s ‘Utopia’ to frame our undeniably parallel social issues and better understand not just the text\, but ourselves as individuals. We’ll begin by examining trauma and its aftermath (both historically and presently) and end with examining the following NYC Dept. of Health’s statistic: that 1 in 5 New Yorkers has a mental disorder. We will then look at how depression and anxiety (two of the most prevalent diagnoses) have affected our present\, and perhaps\, more importantly\, their effects on our collective future. \nQuestions to think about: \nWhat are More’s thoughts on social ills and their relationship to mental illness? What are yours?\nWould More be surprised at the state of our society today? Why or why not? \nWhat are the ways in which we can collectively work to become a healthier community/society? \nAbout the Teacher: \nPatricia Kim received her MFA from Columbia University and teaches Composition and Literature classes at Baruch College while completing a novel.

SUMMARY:Transforming Police into Jedi Peacebuilders
DESCRIPTION:This Olio event will focus on NYU professor Brad Heckman’s work with the NYPD to imbue police officers with skills to de-escalate conflict and build trust with civilians during our divided times — in the wake of countless tragic incidents between cops and civilians and against the backdrop of Black Lives Matter. We’ll focus on the question:  How do you meaningfully engage and communicate with a group that may be dissonant with your values\, ethics\, and beliefs? \nUsing his illustrations\, stories\, demonstrations\, and drawings\, Brad will discuss the challenges and outcomes of promoting peaceful change in an extraordinarily challenging environment. He’ll include skills that can not only be used on the beat\, but in our daily lives as well. He’ll also speak to his recent work building young peacebuilders in Iraq and other post-conflict countries.

SUMMARY:Performing Knowledge: What Does Learning Feel Like?
DESCRIPTION:What can knowledge feel or look like? How might it move us? What might the emotional and aesthetic effects of knowledge be\, in addition to the cognitive? How does one know or come to know? What place do repetition\, gesture\, rhythm\, mimesis\, rehearsal\, meditation\, and travel have in knowledge? \nNow in its second year\, Performing Knowledge is a one-day festival of knowledge performances that accommodate and celebrate contradiction\, that find their meaning in specific social contexts\, and that may end with a question mark. Prominent scholars and graduate students across disciplines come together to reframe research and knowledge as happy human and intrinsically social occasions. \nThroughout the day\, GC CUNY students and faculty will present their research as 20-30 minute lecture performances. Check website for schedule updates.

SUMMARY:Yin-Yang\, Stress\, and the Western Mind
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Strand as Taoist practitioner\, Darryl Aiken-Afam\, explores with us some ways to loosen up our western conditioned minds to accept a more fluid\, dynamic and hopeful approach to navigating the waters of stress in our lives.\n\nIn this Olio we are going to explore the power of the ancient Chinese Taoist concepts of Yin\, Yang\, and the Five Elements as they relate to reducing stress. Speculated to have arisen in Nigeria\, Africa with the Yoruba people as “Ifa Divination” around 20\,000 BC and migrating over time to China\, the binary concepts of Yin and Yang form a foundation to understanding all types of relationships and interactions in the world. The philosophy of the Five Elements came along many years later and added nuance and depth to the understanding of the changes and interactions of life and how to successfully manage them in healthy\, supportive non-destructive ways. We are going to learn how to loosen up our western conditioned minds to accept a more fluid\, dynamic and hopeful approach to navigating the waters of stress in our lives. You will come away with new ideas that can potentially revolutionize your life in unimagined ways and last you a lifetime!

SUMMARY:Atheism & Morality: Mapping the Game with Andrew Dennis
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Dennis’s talk focuses on the issues resulting from an atheist worldview. He starts by introducing a custom-made framework that utilizes game theory to identify and analyze players in what he calls “The Values Game.” He then divides the concept of atheism into three components and uses this stratification to explain how conversations in atheist spaces get derailed. \nBy the end\, attendees should be able to: \n\nMaintain a new and intuitive understanding of human moral development\nGrasp the generalized history of how we got to where we are\nUnderstand the pitfalls that activist groups fall into\nImprove their own activism\, general understanding of reality\, and conversations with others

SUMMARY:Beyond Oneself: The Ethics and Psychology of Awe
DESCRIPTION:At its core\, awe and wonder appear to be powerful emotions that can inform and shape our attitudes toward ourselves and others\, especially in relation to the larger meaning and purpose of our lives. What are the psychological underpinnings of these universal emotions? How does awe\, for example\, relate to self-knowledge\, and more generally to understanding the enigmatic contradictions of human nature? Is it possible to cultivate and develop this emotion as an ethical incentive in our relations with others? Are awe and wonder capable of awakening and engendering moral transformation? Does the emotion of awe lie at the root of the religious impulse in humans? And is there any room left for a sense of the miraculous in today’s increasingly scientific and secular world? \nProf. of religious studies and ethicist Lisa Sideris joins psychologists Jennifer Stellar and Piercarlo Valdesolo to explore our understanding of how awe shapes our perspectives and views on everything from science to morality.

SUMMARY:Neuroscience and the Study of Intergenerational Trauma: How Does the Remote Past Get Under Our Skin?
DESCRIPTION:How do we “remember” things that did not happen to us? Neuroscience has made remarkable discoveries about ways in which our brains and bodies can be affected by traumatic experiences of our parents. We know that children born to survivors of cataclysmic events are themselves more susceptible to stress\, and at greater risk of mental illnesses like PTSD\, despite never having experienced the trauma themselves. Epigenetics\, the in-utero environment\, early experiences\, and the parent-child relationship all play a role. These discoveries have spurred a compelling field of research into intergenerational trauma\, revealing a complexity of biological and psychological interactions determining risk or resilience – but what does this new knowledge mean for survivors and their children? Scholars in the humanities and arts have long explored the lived experiences of those who feel they have inherited trauma from past generations. What can neuroscientists learn from these explorations\, and what can other disciplines take from advances in neuroscience? We hear from pioneering researchers\, clinicians\, and scholars as they make sense of how the remote past gets under the skin to affect the present. \nSpeakers:\nFrances Champagne\, PhD\, Professor of Psychology\, University of Texas at Austin\nGabriele M. Schwab\, PhD\, Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature\, University of California\, Irvine\nRachel Yehuda\, PhD\, Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience\, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai \n  \nDiscussant:\nMarianne Hirsch\, PhD\, William Peterfield Trent Professor of English and Comparative Literature\, Columbia University \n\nModerator:\nClare McCormack\, PhD\, Presidential Scholar in Society and Neuroscience\, Columbia University \n  \nFree and open to the public\, but RSVP is required via Eventbrite. This event is part of the Seminars in Society and Neuroscience series.

SUMMARY:Yogishri and Bijan Sabet: Investing in Letting Go
DESCRIPTION:In the business world\, success is equated with material gain. The premise of venture capitalist Bijan Sabet’s business is to invest in order to earn more\, and his early investment in digital platforms like Twitter and Tumblr could be described as prescient. But does this type of success yield happiness? SUMMARY:What’s a Brain For? A Moving Story
DESCRIPTION:Neuroscientist Daniel Wolpert\, PhD\, is fascinated by how the brain controls our every movement. The ease with which humans move our arms\, our eyes\, even our lips when we speak masks the true complexity of the control. While computers can now beat grandmasters at chess\, no computer can yet control a robot to manipulate a chess piece with the dexterity of a six-year-old child. Join Dr. Wolpert as he discusses what makes control so hard\, especially in the face of incomplete or rapidly changing information about the world. \nThis conversation will be moderated by Shreya Saxena\, PhD\, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Center for Theoretical Neuroscience at Columbia’s Zuckerman Institute.

SUMMARY:Festival Albertine: How Do We Get People to Care
DESCRIPTION:Artists and activists will be called upon to discuss how to change people’s minds and amplify the call to action.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLiterature\, music\, drama—these are key resources for societies trying to come to grips with new realities. In recent years we’ve seen them begin to grapple with climate change\, but that engagement must now grow. The arts have traditionally engaged with what seemed the most dramatic questions: the struggles of one set of human beings with another. That struggle is still underway\, of course\, but now we’ve added something different: the terrifying drama of people with a suddenly angry natural world. How does this new moment redefine what we think about when we take up brush or pen\, camera or keyboard? What is the work of a poet in a world on fire\, or an orchestra in a city where the seas are rising?\n\nWith Irina Brook\, Lauren Groff\, Fabrice Hyber\, and Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky. Moderated by Bill McKibben.

SUMMARY:Cornel West Matters: Book Talk with Mahamadou Lamine Sagna and Cornel West
DESCRIPTION:Join The Africa Center and Teranga as we present a conversation between Mahamadou Lamine Sagna and Cornel West about “Cornel West Matters”. \nThe book Cornel West Matters is a review of the titular philosopher’s seminal texts by Mahamadou Lamine Sagna\, who has long been interested in the way West analyses politics\, democracy\, religion and race\, and their intersections in America. It is also an analysis of the way West brings religion and music – particularly blues and jazz – into philosophy.

SUMMARY:Lincoln Center White Light Conversation: Let’s Talk About Religion
DESCRIPTION:God was declared dead in 1966\, no longer relevant to an increasingly secular society. Today\, people around the world ardently seek religious and faith-based experiences\, at times with an intolerant fervor. How did we vacillate between such extremes in the span of only half a century? In modern society\, few topics are as subject to ignorance\, misunderstanding\, and manipulation as religion. Although it is a central building block of human consciousness\, we possess surprisingly little knowledge about religious traditions—both of others and our own. From a more generalized “spirituality” to intersections with science and art\, religion has continued to powerfully resonate in our current challenging climate. Join WNYC’s John Schaefer and a group of leading thinkers for a spirited panel discussion exploring the many contradictions inherent in our understanding of religion and the evolutionary pathways of religious belief. \nSeating is limited\, and is available on a first-come\, first-served basis. \n  \nSpeakers: \nJohn Schaefer\, moderator \nKelly Brown Douglas\, dean of the Episcopal Divinity School\, Union Theological Seminary \nMarcelo Gleiser\, theoretical physicist and astronomer \nJames MacMillan\, composer \nStephen Prothero\, author\, Religious Literacy
