SUMMARY:Thomas More's Utopia
DESCRIPTION:Using Thomas More’s Utopia as our foundation\, we’ll examine our own state of mental and emotional health in present day society during this living room Olio event with professor Patricia Kim. \n​Why does the future look so bleak? And what does that have to do with the state of our individual and collective mental health? \nMuch of the dialogue in this Olio will be about our own state of mental and emotional affairs. History is a collection of traumatic events that have been scripted in human blood and mortality and we have all been dropped into its narrative miasma. This makes for a great deal of stress that we will collectively take on in an ad hoc group therapy modality. We will use Thomas More’s ‘Utopia’ to frame our undeniably parallel social issues and better understand not just the text\, but ourselves as individuals. We’ll begin by examining trauma and its aftermath (both historically and presently) and end with examining the following NYC Dept. of Health’s statistic: that 1 in 5 New Yorkers has a mental disorder. We will then look at how depression and anxiety (two of the most prevalent diagnoses) have affected our present\, and perhaps\, more importantly\, their effects on our collective future. \nQuestions to think about: \nWhat are More’s thoughts on social ills and their relationship to mental illness? What are yours?\nWould More be surprised at the state of our society today? Why or why not? \nWhat are the ways in which we can collectively work to become a healthier community/society? \nAbout the Teacher: \nPatricia Kim received her MFA from Columbia University and teaches Composition and Literature classes at Baruch College while completing a novel.

DESCRIPTION:This Olio event will focus on NYU professor Brad Heckman’s work with the NYPD to imbue police officers with skills to de-escalate conflict and build trust with civilians during our divided times — in the wake of countless tragic incidents between cops and civilians and against the backdrop of Black Lives Matter. ​We’ll focus on the question:  How do you meaningfully engage and communicate with a group that may be dissonant with your values\, ethics\, and beliefs? \nUsing his illustrations\, stories\, demonstrations\, and drawings\, Brad will discuss the challenges and outcomes of promoting peaceful change in an extraordinarily challenging environment. What are the psychological underpinnings of these universal emotions? How does awe\, for example\, relate to self-knowledge\, and more generally to understanding the enigmatic contradictions of human nature? Is it possible to cultivate and develop this emotion as an ethical incentive in our relations with others? Are awe and wonder capable of awakening and engendering moral transformation? Does the emotion of awe lie at the root of the religious impulse in humans? DESCRIPTION:How do we “remember” things that did not happen to us? Neuroscience has made remarkable discoveries about ways in which our brains and bodies can be affected by traumatic experiences of our parents. We know that children born to survivors of cataclysmic events are themselves more susceptible to stress\, and at greater risk of mental illnesses like PTSD\, despite never having experienced the trauma themselves. Epigenetics\, the in-utero environment\, early experiences\, and the parent-child relationship all play a role. These discoveries have spurred a compelling field of research into intergenerational trauma\, revealing a complexity of biological and psychological interactions determining risk or resilience – but what does this new knowledge mean for survivors and their children? Scholars in the humanities and arts have long explored the lived experiences of those who feel they have inherited trauma from past generations. What can neuroscientists learn from these explorations\, and what can other disciplines take from advances in neuroscience? DESCRIPTION:At first glance\, the Sleeping Beauty problem appears to be a simple question about probability. But since being proposed 19 years ago by philosopher Adam Elga\, the problem has incited passionate debate in the philosophy community. \nIn this talk\, Peter Winkler will describe the famous thought problem about a dozy princess being awoken once or twice depending on the toss of a coin. Can it really be that the laws of probability do not provide a unique correct answer? Winkler will take a mathematician’s point of view while at the same time trying to elucidate the philosophical principles that the puzzle calls into question. He’ll describe the various camps in the controversy and examine their arguments. In the end\, you’ll have to decide for yourself where you stand. \nWinkler is the William Morrill Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Dartmouth College and is currently serving as Visiting Distinguished Chair for Public Dissemination of Mathematics at the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath).

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Joel Whitebook\, Philosopher and Psychoanalyst\, will discuss his book Freud: An Intellectual Biography. \nCutting through the tired clichés of the “Freud Wars\,” the author presents us with a radically new portrait of the founder of psychoanalysis. Because Whitebook is a philosopher as well as a psychoanalyst\, he has been able to integrate many of the profound transformations that have taken place in psychoanalytic theory and practice\, infant research\, gender studies\, philosophy\, and critical theory since Ernest Jones and Peter Gay published their canonical studies in the last century. Whitebook thereby succeeds in creating an account of Freud’s achievement that speaks to our cultural situation. \nFurthermore\, in addition to presenting the unfolding of Freud’s thinking in the context of the developments in his personal life and in the society at large\, Whitebook has also succeeded in bringing this iconic man to life in compelling fashion. Where Freud often tried to protect himself by hiding behind the forbidding mask of an authoritarian patriarch and unbending rationalist\, we come to see him as the vulnerable\, complex\, and all-too-human person that he was.

DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the intersections of politics\, philosophy\, and radical psychiatry in 20th century France. It focuses on a psychiatric reform movement called “institutional psychotherapy” which had an important influence on many intellectuals and activists\, including François Tosquelles\, Jean Oury\, Felix Guattari\, Frantz Fanon\, Georges Canguilhem\, and Michel Foucault. Anchored in Marxism and in Lacanian psychoanalysis\, institutional psychotherapy advocated a fundamental restructuring of the asylum in order to transform the theory and practice of psychiatric care. More broadly\, for many of these thinkers\, the psychiatric offered a lens to rethink the political in the particular context of postwar France. \nCamille Robcis is an Associate Professor of History and French at Columbia University.
