SUMMARY:What’s a Brain For? A Moving Story
DESCRIPTION:Neuroscientist Daniel Wolpert\, PhD\, is fascinated by how the brain controls our every movement. The ease with which humans move our arms\, our eyes\, even our lips when we speak masks the true complexity of the control. While computers can now beat grandmasters at chess\, no computer can yet control a robot to manipulate a chess piece with the dexterity of a six-year-old child. Join Dr. Wolpert as he discusses what makes control so hard\, especially in the face of incomplete or rapidly changing information about the world. \nThis conversation will be moderated by Shreya Saxena\, PhD\, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Center for Theoretical Neuroscience at Columbia’s Zuckerman Institute.

SUMMARY:Festival Albertine: How Do We Get People to Care
DESCRIPTION:Artists and activists will be called upon to discuss how to change people’s minds and amplify the call to action.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLiterature\, music\, drama—these are key resources for societies trying to come to grips with new realities. In recent years we’ve seen them begin to grapple with climate change\, but that engagement must now grow. The arts have traditionally engaged with what seemed the most dramatic questions: the struggles of one set of human beings with another. That struggle is still underway\, of course\, but now we’ve added something different: the terrifying drama of people with a suddenly angry natural world. How does this new moment redefine what we think about when we take up brush or pen\, camera or keyboard? What is the work of a poet in a world on fire\, or an orchestra in a city where the seas are rising?\n\nWith Irina Brook\, Lauren Groff\, Fabrice Hyber\, and Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky. Moderated by Bill McKibben.

SUMMARY:Cornel West Matters: Book Talk with Mahamadou Lamine Sagna and Cornel West
DESCRIPTION:Join The Africa Center and Teranga as we present a conversation between Mahamadou Lamine Sagna and Cornel West about “Cornel West Matters”. \nThe book Cornel West Matters is a review of the titular philosopher’s seminal texts by Mahamadou Lamine Sagna\, who has long been interested in the way West analyses politics\, democracy\, religion and race\, and their intersections in America. It is also an analysis of the way West brings religion and music – particularly blues and jazz – into philosophy.

SUMMARY:Lincoln Center White Light Conversation: Let’s Talk About Religion
DESCRIPTION:God was declared dead in 1966\, no longer relevant to an increasingly secular society. Today\, people around the world ardently seek religious and faith-based experiences\, at times with an intolerant fervor. How did we vacillate between such extremes in the span of only half a century? In modern society\, few topics are as subject to ignorance\, misunderstanding\, and manipulation as religion. Although it is a central building block of human consciousness\, we possess surprisingly little knowledge about religious traditions—both of others and our own. From a more generalized “spirituality” to intersections with science and art\, religion has continued to powerfully resonate in our current challenging climate. Join WNYC’s John Schaefer and a group of leading thinkers for a spirited panel discussion exploring the many contradictions inherent in our understanding of religion and the evolutionary pathways of religious belief. \nSeating is limited\, and is available on a first-come\, first-served basis. \n  \nSpeakers: \nJohn Schaefer\, moderator \nKelly Brown Douglas\, dean of the Episcopal Divinity School\, Union Theological Seminary \nMarcelo Gleiser\, theoretical physicist and astronomer \nJames MacMillan\, composer \nStephen Prothero\, author\, Religious Literacy

SUMMARY:Simons Foundation Presents: The Math Puzzle That Spawned 100 Philosophy Papers
DESCRIPTION:At first glance\, the Sleeping Beauty problem appears to be a simple question about probability. But since being proposed 19 years ago by philosopher Adam Elga\, the problem has incited passionate debate in the philosophy community. \nIn this talk\, Peter Winkler will describe the famous thought problem about a dozy princess being awoken once or twice depending on the toss of a coin. Can it really be that the laws of probability do not provide a unique correct answer? Winkler will take a mathematician’s point of view while at the same time trying to elucidate the philosophical principles that the puzzle calls into question. He’ll describe the various camps in the controversy and examine their arguments. In the end\, you’ll have to decide for yourself where you stand. \nWinkler is the William Morrill Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Dartmouth College and is currently serving as Visiting Distinguished Chair for Public Dissemination of Mathematics at the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath).

SUMMARY:Stoicism or Epicureanism? Let the Discussion Begin
DESCRIPTION:Stoicism and Epicureanism have been around for more than two millennia. Surprisingly\, they are being proposed in the 21st century as philosophies to adopt in order to live a life worth living (a eudaimonic life\, as the ancient Greeks called it). \nJoin us for a conversation between Prof. Catherine Wilson\, author of How to Be an Epicurean\, and Prof. Massimo Pigliucci\, author of How to Be a Stoic\, and decide for yourself whether you are a follower of Epicurus or of Zeno (or neither\, that’s okay too). \nThe authors will be signing books (for sale at the event) after their friendly discussion. \n$5 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Workshop on Joel Whitebook's Freud: An Intellectual Biography
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Joel Whitebook\, Philosopher and Psychoanalyst\, will discuss his book Freud: An Intellectual Biography. \nCutting through the tired clichés of the “Freud Wars\,” the author presents us with a radically new portrait of the founder of psychoanalysis. Because Whitebook is a philosopher as well as a psychoanalyst\, he has been able to integrate many of the profound transformations that have taken place in psychoanalytic theory and practice\, infant research\, gender studies\, philosophy\, and critical theory since Ernest Jones and Peter Gay published their canonical studies in the last century. Whitebook thereby succeeds in creating an account of Freud’s achievement that speaks to our cultural situation. \nFurthermore\, in addition to presenting the unfolding of Freud’s thinking in the context of the developments in his personal life and in the society at large\, Whitebook has also succeeded in bringing this iconic man to life in compelling fashion. Where Freud often tried to protect himself by hiding behind the forbidding mask of an authoritarian patriarch and unbending rationalist\, we come to see him as the vulnerable\, complex\, and all-too-human person that he was.

SUMMARY:Olio Breakfast Club | Frankenstein: Who is the Monster?
DESCRIPTION:For this Olio Breakfast Club with Baruch College Professor Patricia Kim\, we’ll meet for brunch at Three’s Brewing and take a deep dive into Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to discuss the human compulsion for scientific knowledge and some of its cultural consequences. \nSome questions to think about: Who is the monster? In what ways are you\, the reader\, asked to reflect on\, if not interrogated about your moral obligations? How so? What can we do—both individually and collectively—to empower ourselves in a landscape that actively works to uproot the possibility of lasting change? \n

SUMMARY:Eros: The Geometry of Desire
DESCRIPTION:This Olio event – with professor Jamie Warren of BMCC-CUNY – will explore this mercurial creature\, the Devil-God Desire. Through a close reading of Anne Carson’s work Eros: The Bittersweet\, we will question how we have come to believe that love requires the number two\, when logic demonstrates that the answer is three. Triangles\, not lines\, are the vehicles for our most precious longings and the engineers of our most devastating voids.

SUMMARY:The Perils of the One (Stathis Gourgouris)
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Recent Work by Stathis Gourgouris \nIn The Perils of the One\, Stathis Gourgouris offers a philosophical anthropology that confronts the legacy of “monarchical thinking”: the desire to subjugate oneself to unitary principles and structures\, whether political\, moral\, theological\, or secular. In wide-ranging essays that are at once poetic and polemical\, intellectual and passionate\, Gourgouris reads across politics and theology\, literary and art criticism\, psychoanalysis and feminism in a critique of both political theology and the metaphysics of secularism. \nAbout the Speakers: \nHent de Vries is Paulette Goddard Professor of the Humanities at NYU. He is Professor of  German\, Religious Studies\, Comparative Literature\, and Affiliated Professor of Philosophy. \nBruce Robbins\, Old Dominion Foundation Professor in the Humanities at Columbia University\, works mainly in the areas of nineteenth and twentieth century fiction\, literary and cultural theory\, and postcolonial studies. \nLydia H. Liu is the Wun Tsun Tam Professor in the Humanities at Columbia University; Director\, Institute for Comparative Literature and Society. Her research centers on modern China\, cross-cultural exchange\, and global transformation in modern history\, with a focus on the movement of words\, theories\, and artifacts across national boundaries and on the evolution of writing\, textuality\, and media technology. \nEtienne Balibar\, Professor of French and Comparative Literature\, teaches at Columbia every Fall semester. He is Professor Emeritus of moral and political philosophy at Université de Paris X – Nanterre and Professor Emeritus of Humanities at the University of California\, Irvine.

SUMMARY:Camille Robcis | Disalienation: Politics\, Philosophy\, and Radical Psychiatry in France
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the intersections of politics\, philosophy\, and radical psychiatry in 20th century France. It focuses on a psychiatric reform movement called “institutional psychotherapy” which had an important influence on many intellectuals and activists\, including François Tosquelles\, Jean Oury\, Felix Guattari\, Frantz Fanon\, Georges Canguilhem\, and Michel Foucault. Anchored in Marxism and in Lacanian psychoanalysis\, institutional psychotherapy advocated a fundamental restructuring of the asylum in order to transform the theory and practice of psychiatric care. More broadly\, for many of these thinkers\, the psychiatric offered a lens to rethink the political in the particular context of postwar France. \nCamille Robcis is an Associate Professor of History and French at Columbia University.

SUMMARY:Skirball Talks | Slavoj Žižek: Disorder Under Heaven
DESCRIPTION:As part of NYU Skirball Talks\, the NYU Department of German and Deutsches Haus at NYU present “Disorder under Heaven” with Slavoj Žižek. \nInternational relations\, in biotechnology\, in sexual relations…But it is here that we should remember Mao’s old motto: “There is great disorder under heaven\, so the situation is excellent!” Let’s not lose nerves\, let’s exploit the confusion as a chance to propose a new radical vision. In January 2019\, an international team of scientists proposed “a diet it says can improve health while ensuring sustainable food production to reduce further damage to the planet.” We are talking about a radical reorganization of our entire food production and distribution—so how to do it? Is it not clear that a strong global agency is needed with the power to coordinate such measures? And is not such an agency pointing in the direction of what we once called “Communism”? And does the same not hold for other threats to our survival as humans? Is a similar global agency not needed also to deal with the problem of increasing numbers of refugees and immigrants\, with the problem of digital control over our lives? Let’s not be afraid to tackle the problem of the new order that the ongoing disorder is calling for. \nSlavoj Žižek will be introduced by Xudong Zhang\, Professor of Comparative Literature & East Asian Studies\, and Director of China House at NYU.

By thinking through the aftermath of the closure of Western philosophical thought and its meaning for the neo-liberal epoch\, we will encounter some of the poetic responses to this closure and the attempts made philosophically to reorient thought. SUMMARY:A Conversation with Scott Shay: In Good Faith
DESCRIPTION:Are religion and rational thought incompatible? Are idolatry and blind faith in the moral development of men and women irrational\, perhaps even more so\, as blind faith in religion? These and many other questions are posed by author Scott Shay in his groundbreaking book\, In Good Faith\, which takes on the group of authors known as the New Atheists directly and convincingly. It is an argument that makes a rational case for the belief in God. \nJoin us at the Harmonie Club for a Conversation with author and entrepreneur Scott Shay. Doors open at 6:30pm.

SUMMARY:A Dramatic Reading of Selections from Gwe\, Young Man of New Guinea
DESCRIPTION:Join the Aesthetic Realism Foundation for a dramatic reading of selections from Gwe\, Young Man of New Guinea\,  a novel against racism by Arnold Perey\, PhD anthropologist\, and aesthetic realism consultant. \nGwe was born in Stone Age New Guinea. Alan was born in New York City. This is their story and the story of Gwe’s people. \nYou’ll take a trip to the heart of papua New Guinea\, to the mountains\, peaceful and turbulent\, where Gwe lives. You’ll experience\, as close to you as your fingertips\, an ancient culture\, real people\, and real events. the anthropology of this book is authentic. You’ll hear the explanation of the horrible racism that is in America and the world now— and what can really end it. we invite you to a new understanding of the human self as you meet Gwe\, his relations\, his enemies\, and Alan\, the anthropologist who lived with them. aesthetic realism\, the philosophy founded by the great poet and educator Eli Siegel\, is that understanding. it explains: There is a fight in every person between respect for the world and contempt for the world. from the desire for contempt arises the cruelty of humanity\, including racism. from the desire to respect comes the seeing of people’s feelings as real\, and justice\, fairness\, compassion.

SUMMARY:The Art of Dying\, The Act of Grieving
DESCRIPTION:Today\, many of us have no idea how to speak about death\, let alone how to behave in the presence of it. Do we hug our colleague who has just lost a parent? Do we attend a funeral for someone we don’t love? Do we wash dead bodies? What do you say when someone you love tells you they are dying? How do you let others know you are heartbroken by grief? This Olio event\, led by BMCC-CUNYC Assistant Professor Jamie Warren\, will look at the lost art of dying\, the absence of clear social expectations for the grieving\, and try to understand how and why we let death disappear from life. \n*This Olio event will take place in a Bushwick apartment. Address will be sent upon rsvp* \n  \n

SUMMARY:Fighting the Future: Ethics and Algorithms
DESCRIPTION:At different stages of the criminal justice system\, from policing\, bail hearings\, and sentencing\, computerized algorithms are replacing human decision-making in determining where to police\, who to arrest\, who goes to jail\, and who goes free. This Olio\, led by Barry Lam\, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Vassar College\, will introduce people to how these algorithms work\, the under-appreciated moral problems with their implementation\, and how the future of criminal justice depends on decisions we make now about the risks we are willing to tolerate for public safety.

SUMMARY:The Power of a Single Cell: The Deep History of Ourselves | Joseph Ledoux + Jeffrey Sachs
DESCRIPTION:Consciousness has given humans the power to transcend our physical limitations and exert an unprecedented influence on the world around us. Renowned neuroscientist Joseph LeDoux\, author of The Deep History of Ourselves: The Four-Billion-Year Story of How We Got Conscious Brains\, returns to the Rubin to argue that the key to understanding all human behavior lies in viewing evolution through the prism of our really earliest selves: the first living organisms. Even the earliest single cell organisms had to solve the same problems we and our cells have to solve today in order to survive and thrive. LeDoux invites Dr. Jeffrey Sachs to explore how the development of nervous systems powered human consciousness\, which made our greatest and most horrendous achievements as a species possible. \nA book signing for Professor LeDoux’s new book\, The Deep History of Ourselves\, takes place after the talk.

SUMMARY:Death Cafe at Green-Wood Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided.

SUMMARY:The Platform of Joy - Sharon Salzberg\, Mark Epstein and Robert Thurman
DESCRIPTION:In a famous statement\, the Buddha said that he taught one thing and one thing only: suffering and the end of suffering. Although this sounds like two things\, he meant what he said. Within longing\, behind addiction\, beneath rage and under confusion lies a joy that is accessible to all. Uncovered during a period of self-investigation preceding his enlightenment\, this joy became the wellspring of the Buddha’s psychology and the foundation of what he called the Middle Path. In more recent times\, it has been rediscovered by some of the more thoughtful psychoanalytic practitioners of our own culture. \nThis evening’s gathering\, bringing together three Western Buddhist therapists and teachers\, will explore this platform of joy\, what makes it available and unavailable\, and how it can contribute to our psychological and spiritual health. Meditation will provide some relief from the discussion (or vice versa).
