SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Sinan Antoon and Hadieh Shafie
DESCRIPTION:Curator for “I open my eyes and see myself under a tree laden with fruit that I cannot name.” \, Lila Nazemian will be in conversation with poet Sinan Antoon and artist Hadieh Shafie to discuss the themes in the exhibition\, relative to narrative-making practices of language\, translation\, and the mechanics of the written word. \n“I open my eyes and see myself under a tree laden with fruit that I cannot name.” is an exhibition entitled after a line in The Book of Collateral Damage\, written by Sinan Antoon\, featured alongside the work of Hadieh Shafie and Zarina Hashmi\, all deeply embedded within narrative mediums. Through the use of paper\, printing methods and orality\, each artist produces works that function as allegories for sharing stories of home and of their lived experiences.

SUMMARY:Walking Tour: Edgar Allan Poe in Greenwich Village
DESCRIPTION:Join the Merchant’s House Museum on a two-hour literary and historical walking tour that traces a path into Edgar Allan Poe’s life in Greenwich Village in the 1840s\, where the author lived and worked at the height of his fame — before plunging irrevocably into the final\, abysmal chapter of his short life. On this tour\, you will visit the site his former home\, learn of his contemporary rivals and admirers\, and see where he wrote some of his most famous stories and poems. Interweaving some of his most famous tales with Greenwich Village’s macabre secret histories\, this tour is guaranteed to enthrall fans of Poe’s literary grotesques while honoring his legacy in New York City. \nThis tour is approximately 2 hours in duration and approximately 1.5 miles in length. Runs rain or shine. Tour meets off-site at 85 West Third Street. Tour ends near Washington Square.

SUMMARY:Brad Gooch and Maryam Mortaz | Rumi: Unseen Poems
DESCRIPTION:Join 192 Books to celebrate the release of a collection of never-before-translated poems by the widely beloved medieval Persian poet Rumi. \nRumi (1207-1273) was trained in Sufism–a mystic tradition within Islam–and founded the Sufi order known to us as the Whirling Dervishes\, who use dance and music as part of their spiritual devotion. Rumi’s poetry has long been popular with contemporary Western audiences because of the way it combines the sacred and the sensual\, describing divine love in rapturously human terms. \nBrad Gooch and Maryam Mortaz will read from the collection in both the original Persian and in their new English translations\, and then take questions from the audience.
