DESCRIPTION:Wherever possible\, guide Joe Svehlak will keep us off the streets as we learn about the continuing struggle to keep Downtown Manhattan connected to its multi-layered history during this time of much redevelopment. Above ground we’ll view sites connected with preservation gains and losses\, including the nation’s first memorial\, and New York’s first Roman Catholic parish. Underground\, walking various subway passages\, we’ll see major Arts for Transit projects that highlight the area’s diverse history\, such as Trade\, Treasure and Travel by Margie Hughto\, re-installed in the Cortlandt Street underpass. We’ll walk through the new Path Transit Hub and the Dey Street passage on our way to the Fulton Transit Center complex with its ornate landmarked Corbin Building\, original subway tiles\, and the re-installed Marine Grill murals by Frederick Dana Marsh depicting the history of shipping in New York harbor.\nBring a metro card with at least one fare since we will end in this interconnecting maze of four different subway stations.

SUMMARY:Art Deco Washington Heights: Elegant Uptown Architecture
DESCRIPTION:High up on a hill\, its streets lined with modest but attractive six-story Art Deco apartment houses\, Washington Heights has more in common with West Bronx neighborhoods just across the Harlem River than with the rest of Manhattan. Many of the same architects who worked on the Grand Concourse also designed apartment buildings on or near Fort Washington Avenue – we will see work by Horace Ginsbern\, Jacob Felson\, Israel Crausman\, Miller and Goldhammer\, Charles Kreymborg\, and H. Herbert Lillien. Two taller apartment buildings\, by Boak and Paris\, offer a more idiosyncratic take on the modernism of the 1930s. This walk with Anthony W. Robins will also include a one-story taxpayer\, and one of the city’s few frankly Deco subway entrances. But the star attraction is the Fourth Church of Christ\, Scientist (now the Hebrew Tabernacle of Washington Heights)\, one of perhaps a dozen or so Art Deco houses of worship anywhere in the city. Mr. Robins is the author of the award-winning book\, “New York Art Deco: A Guide to Gotham’s Jazz Age Architecture.”

Stephen Crane called it “the most interesting place in New York.” An incubator of American history and culture\, it has important links to Washington\, Lincoln\, baseball\, streetcars\, tap dance\, tattoos\, minstrelsy\, Yiddish theater\, vaudeville\, Stephen Foster\, Irving Berlin\, Harry Houdini\, and Mae West. A long-time home to rescue missions\, affordable jewelry\, lighting and restaurant supply districts\, and an artist community\, NYC’s oldest\, most architecturally diverse street – including its oldest brick house – was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. We will visit settings associated with all of these phases of Harlem’s history\, while concentrating on the emergence of the Harlem Renaissance\, that wonderful period of Harlem history when the creativity of Black writers\, musicians and performers became a sought after and much admired influence on American and world culture. We will walk through Sugar Hill\, past Hamilton Grange\, Hamilton Heights\, the historic City College campus\, Strivers Row\, and the Abyssinian Baptist Church\, and see sites where well known Harlem residents lived. We will end this enlightening and pleasurable Prowl at a special pavilion to view historic WPA era murals depicting the lives of Harlem’s Black residents.
