Denney Designated Professor of English and Director of Popular Culture Studies at The Ohio State University\, specializing in American literature\, comics\, film\, and popular culture. Dr. Gardner is the author of Master Plots: Race and the Founding of an American Literature\, 1787-1845; Projections: Comics and the History of 21st-century Storytelling; and The Rise and Fall of Early American Magazine Culture\, among other books and writings. \nDr. Gardner recently curated the Drawing Blood: Comics and Medicine exhibition at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum\, which traces the history of comics’ obsession with medicine from the 18th century to today\, and will serve as the subject for his lecture.

DESCRIPTION:General Director of the Portland Opera Christopher Mattaliano talks about his collaboration with Maurice Sendak and opera director Frank Corsaro in staging Mozart’s The Magic Flute\, Janacek’s The Cunning Little Vixen\, and Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges. The presentation will be illustrated by images of Sendak’s sketches and production scenes. SUMMARY:Art Deco Washington Heights: Elegant Uptown Architecture
DESCRIPTION:High up on a hill\, its streets lined with modest but attractive six-story Art Deco apartment houses\, Washington Heights has more in common with West Bronx neighborhoods just across the Harlem River than with the rest of Manhattan. Many of the same architects who worked on the Grand Concourse also designed apartment buildings on or near Fort Washington Avenue – we will see work by Horace Ginsbern\, Jacob Felson\, Israel Crausman\, Miller and Goldhammer\, Charles Kreymborg\, and H. Herbert Lillien. Two taller apartment buildings\, by Boak and Paris\, offer a more idiosyncratic take on the modernism of the 1930s. This walk with Anthony W. Robins will also include a one-story taxpayer\, and one of the city’s few frankly Deco subway entrances. But the star attraction is the Fourth Church of Christ\, Scientist (now the Hebrew Tabernacle of Washington Heights)\, one of perhaps a dozen or so Art Deco houses of worship anywhere in the city. Mr. Robins is the author of the award-winning book\, “New York Art Deco: A Guide to Gotham’s Jazz Age Architecture.”

DESCRIPTION:As part of the Brooklyn Book Festival 2019\, one of America’s premier book festivals and the largest free literary event in New York City\, Deutsches Haus at NYU presents together with the PEN Translation Committee\, and PEN America’s Children’s and Young Adult Books Committee the panel discussion Translating Visual Stories: Graphic Novels\, Comics\, Picture Books\, and Illustrated YA with Kristi Fernandez\, Lyn Miller-Lachmann\, Sandra Smith\, CJ Suzuki\, and Lucas Zwirner. \nStories that combine text and illustration are growing in popularity. Some of the most interesting and innovative work is coming from outside the US and translated into English. Panelists will talk about translating graphic novels\, comics\, picture books\, and illustrated YA books and how both text and visuals change when adapted to a new language and culture. We’ll focus on Japan\, a pioneer of comics and graphic novels\, Western Europe\, where edgy stories dominate and refugees give voice to a more diverse continent\, Germany\, and the attempt to re-frame a beloved YA classic for a U.S. audience\, and Brazil\, with its unique picture book illustrations.
