DESCRIPTION:A sneak preview of David Simon’s chilling adaptation of the Philip Roth masterpiece that follows the plight of a working-class Jewish family after Charles Lindbergh wins the Presidency and turns the country toward isolationism\, xenophobia\, and fascism. \nSimon and cast members will sit for a conversation after a screening of the first hour of the six-part miniseries\, which premieres on March 16. The conversation will be moderated by NPR’s Peter Sagal. \nSet in 1940s New Jersey\, The Plot Against America imagines an alternate American history in which the aviation hero beats F.D.R.\, reaches a neutrality agreement with Hitler\, and leads a government program of gradually escalating anti-Semitism. At the heart of the story are Bess and Herman Levin\, two young parents grappling with what Roth called “the terror of the unforeseen” and striving to protect their sons from an increasingly hostile environment that threatens to rupture their family\, their community and their country.

DESCRIPTION:Figuration is one of the oldest art forms\, but it continually evolves\, along with our changing understanding of human identity. Aria Dean\, Sam McKinniss\, Ebecho Muslimova A’10\, and Tschabalala Self discuss contemporary figurative painting of the last five years in a free\, public event. Alison Gingeras moderates. \nThe featured artists often source imagery from the Internet\, and draw on aesthetics developed in Internet-first channels. Digital techniques and affordances are incorporated into rendering processes with traditional media: brushstrokes are more precise\, lines are sharper\, and color is more highly keyed. In these works\, expressionism is located more in the composition than in the paint handling. \nThis event launches Rizzoli’s Unrealism: New Figurative Painting. Copies will be available for sale by The Strand.

In this talk\, magician Mark Mitton will explain to you how magic tricks work and what tools they might give us to survive in a society that asks us to act upon increasingly complex information. \nMark Mitton is a magician who is fascinated by using magic to better understand how we see the world. He performs at private functions and corporate events\, produces unique entertainment and educational programs around the world\, and explores the limits and potential of perception. His specialty is physical misdirection\, which can teach us about the surprises in science\, art and our daily lives.

SUMMARY:Mohamed Kouaci: A Photographic Memory of Early Algeria
DESCRIPTION:Mohamed Kouaci is thought to be the only Algerian photographer to have documented the entire Algerian struggle and the early years of Independence. A self-taught photographer\, he was head of the photography service at the Information Ministry of the G.P.R.A. (Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic) from 1958 to 1962. \nIn this talk\, Adel Ben Bella\, shares rare photographs from the Kouaci archive that includes portraits of historical figures and revolutionaries such as Frantz Fanon\, Che Guevara and Fidel Castro along with images of the role of female soldiers\, life in the refugee camps\, the A.L.N (Algerian Liberation Army) military bases\, and the first few days of Algeria’s independence in July 1962. \nAdel Ben Bella\, independent scholar and filmmaker \nRegistration for this event includes the 3pm screening of La Zerda ou les chants de l’oubli (Zerda or the Songs of Forgetting)

SUMMARY:Lequeu\, Exceptional Draftsman?
DESCRIPTION:If it were not for his drawings at the Bibliothèque nationale de France\, Jean-Jacques Lequeu would be a simple footnote in the history of late eighteenth-century French architecture.  Lequeu’s drawings reflect the way architects of his generation tended to rely more heavily on graphic communication than on textual or theoretical means of expressing their ideas.  Lequeu established a specific and original dialogue between text and image that allowed him to question and distort the graphic language set by his colleagues. Join Basile C. Baudez\, Assistant Professor at Princeton University\, for a presentation contextualizing Lequeu’s production in the history of architectural draftsmanship and to uncover the reasons why he remains one of the most fascinating artists of his time. \nThe exhibition Jean-Jacques Lequeu: Visionary Architect. Drawings from the Bibliothèque nationale de France will be open at 5:30 PM for program attendees.

DESCRIPTION:Curator for “I open my eyes and see myself under a tree laden with fruit that I cannot name.” \, Lila Nazemian will be in conversation with poet Sinan Antoon and artist Hadieh Shafie to discuss the themes in the exhibition\, relative to narrative-making practices of language\, translation\, and the mechanics of the written word. \n“I open my eyes and see myself under a tree laden with fruit that I cannot name.” is an exhibition entitled after a line in The Book of Collateral Damage\, written by Sinan Antoon\, featured alongside the work of Hadieh Shafie and Zarina Hashmi\, all deeply embedded within narrative mediums. Through the use of paper\, printing methods and orality\, each artist produces works that function as allegories for sharing stories of home and of their lived experiences.

SUMMARY:The Big Thaw: Ancient Carbon\, Modern Science\, and a Race to Save the World
DESCRIPTION:Permafrost—dark\, ice-flaked\, permanently frozen ground that lies under tundra and boreal forests across our northern regions—covers more than 12 percent of the earth’s land surface. It exists in places that seem otherworldly and unimaginably remote to most of us\, but the changes taking place in the permafrost layer may ultimately affect the lives of every person on Earth. \nThe permafrost layer contains a vast store of ancient carbon\, more than four times the quantity found in all of today’s forests. It is like a ticking “carbon bomb”\, releasing carbon dioxide and methane as the permafrost thaws. Braving hordes of mosquitoes\, quicksand\, and extreme temperatures\, researchers are racing against the clock to educate us about the changes we must make to preserve Earth’s carbon balance. \nArctic scientist Max Holmes and photographer Chris Linder will share stories about their work studying and photographing thawing permafrost in Siberia and the Arctic. Their new book The Big Thaw: Ancient Carbon\, Modern Science\, and a Race to Save the World will be available for purchase and signing after the presentation.

SUMMARY:Marino Marini and Henry Moore: An Italian Friendship
DESCRIPTION:This talk will explore the friendship between two of the most celebrated sculptors of the 20th century\, Henry Moore and Marino Marini. Having met through the New York art dealer Curt Valentin\, throughout the 1960s and 1970s they often spent time together on the coast of Tuscany in Italy\, where Marini lived and Moore had a holiday home. In 1962 Marini made a portrait bust of Moore at his Forte dei Marmi villa. United by a love for Michelangelo’s sculpture\, which was famously made from marble sourced from the nearby quarries in Carrara\, and by a desire to both revisit and modernize the European tradition of sculpture\, of which Tuscany offered many exceptional examples\, Moore and Marini shared many creative concerns and greatly admired each other. The talk will also consider the network of friendships and professional contacts around the two sculptors\, from the master carvers at stone merchants Henraux to prominent artists and intellectuals such as Jacques Lipchitz and Eugenio Montale. \nSebastiano Barassi is the Head of Collections & Exhibitions at the Henry Moore Foundation in the United Kingdom. \nPlease\, join us for a prior to the lecture for a complimentary reception with a wine tasting and hors d’oeuvres hosted by Santi Wines.

SUMMARY:The Politics of Preservation
DESCRIPTION:MoMA PS1 presents an afternoon of programming that examines the destruction of Iraqi heritage by the allied forces during the Gulf wars. Scholarship and mainstream attention surrounding the destruction and preservation of cultural heritage in Iraq have tended to focus largely on antiquity. This critical conversation expands this scope to not only address archeological sites and artifacts\, but to also focus on the living contemporary culture of Iraq\, posing questions about how culture is perceived\, instrumentalized\, and valued during times of war and occupation. \nMedical anthropologist Omar Dewachi\, whose research focuses on the intersection of global health\, the history of medicine\, and political anthropology\, leads the discussion. He is joined by Zahra Ali\, Zainab Bahrani\, David Harvey\, and Zainab Saleh. Following the presentations\, participants will come together in a conversation moderated by Ali. \nThe discussion is followed by a concert from renowned Iraqi maqam vocalist Hamid Al-Saadi performing with the celebrated ensemble Safaafir featuring Amir ElSaffar.

DESCRIPTION:Wherever possible\, guide Joe Svehlak will keep us off the streets as we learn about the continuing struggle to keep Downtown Manhattan connected to its multi-layered history during this time of much redevelopment. Above ground we’ll view sites connected with preservation gains and losses\, including the nation’s first memorial\, and New York’s first Roman Catholic parish. Underground\, walking various subway passages\, we’ll see major Arts for Transit projects that highlight the area’s diverse history\, such as Trade\, Treasure and Travel by Margie Hughto\, re-installed in the Cortlandt Street underpass. We’ll walk through the new Path Transit Hub and the Dey Street passage on our way to the Fulton Transit Center complex with its ornate landmarked Corbin Building\, original subway tiles\, and the re-installed Marine Grill murals by Frederick Dana Marsh depicting the history of shipping in New York harbor.\nBring a metro card with at least one fare since we will end in this interconnecting maze of four different subway stations.
