DESCRIPTION:Deutsches Haus at NYU\, University Alliance Ruhr\, and the German Research Foundation (DFG) present a conversation among Emily Balcetis (NYU)\, Lee Jussim (Rutgers University)\, and Albert Newen (Ruhr-University Bochum) as moderator\, exploring the concept of human perception and its inherent biases that affect our understanding of the world. \nAbout the event:\nPerceptions are the window to our world. Rather than merely producing a snapshot\, our brains actively create our experiences when we perceive objects or persons. Given that background knowledge and biases shape the ways in which we understand the world\, can we ever trust our perceptual experiences? To what extent can we rely on science to correct our view of the world since sciences are also influenced by the biases of individual researchers? A panel of psychologists and philosophers will present recent research in a conversation about our capacity to adequately understand the world around us.

DESCRIPTION:Simons Foundation Presents Free Event: The Science of Love\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nNothing is more treasured — and mysterious — than the bond between mother and child. After a mother gives birth\, her brain and body change in ways that enable her to care for the new life. Bianca Jones Marlin examines the brain dynamics behind these changes\, some of which are ‘remembered’ in the genes and passed down for generations. In her talk\, she will challenge the age-old concept of ‘nature vs. nurture’ and show how a bridge between learned and innate animal behaviors is built. Audience members will also have an opportunity to participate using their senses to explore the real-time effects of neurochemicals in social learning. \nMarlin is a neuroscientist and postdoctoral researcher at Columbia University in the laboratory of Nobel Laureate Richard Axel\, where she investigates how traumatic experiences in parents affect the brain structure of their offspring. She holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience from New York University and dual bachelor’s degrees in biology and adolescent education from St. John’s University. As a graduate student\, her research focused on the vital bond between parent and child\, and she studied the use of neurochemicals\, such as the “love drug” oxytocin\, as a treatment to strengthen fragile and broken parent-child relationships. \nMarlin aims to utilize neurobiology and the science of learning to better inform both the scientific and educational community on how positive experiences dictate brain health\, academic performance and social well-being. Now\, a landmark lawsuit against the organizers of the 2017 Charlottesville march is taking on the leadership of this movement — asserting that they intentionally coordinated the violence that erupted\, thus breaking the law. \nLed by Roberta Kaplan (lead counsel on the Supreme Court case that led to the legalization of same-sex marriage) and Karen Dunn (a former federal prosecutor in Virginia)\, the legal action — filed against a broad range of neo-Nazis\, white supremacists and affiliated hate groups — exposes the individuals and organizations driving the wave of white supremacist hate and dismantles the infrastructure at the center of their movement. SUMMARY:What Nostalgia Was: The History of a Deadly Emotion
DESCRIPTION:People once died of nostalgia. While we all recognize nostalgia when we see it\, and know that it “ain’t what it used to be\,” few of us are familiar with what it once was. This talk uncovers the forgotten medical history of nostalgia from the term’s invention in Switzerland in 1688 to the disease’s demise in colonial north Africa in the late nineteenth century. By tracing the scientific and social conditions of possibility of this deadly form of nostalgia\, Thomas Dodman seeks to grasp it as a specifically modern psychological condition and thus show the historicity of our emotions. \nEvent Speaker\nThomas Dodman is the Director of Undergraduate Studies and Assistant Professor of French at Columbia University. He is a historian of modern France and its empire. Thomas Dodman’s research grapples with forms and experiences of social change in the modern era.

SUMMARY:Illuminating Forgotten Histories: New York City's Early Black Communities
DESCRIPTION:The Lapidus Center for the Historical Analysis of Transatlantic Slavery and the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation are partnering to illuminate aspects of New York City’s early Black neighborhoods. From Seneca Village\, a community that will be formally memorialized in Central Park soon to Greenwich Village’s “Little Africa”\, our group of experts will address the work of discovery\, preservation\, and documentation of these and other historically significant\, but widely-forgotten Black communities. Panelists will include: \nLeslie M. Harris\, professor of history at Northwestern University and author or co-editor of numerous books\, including In the Shadow of Slavery: African Americans in New York City\, 1626-1863 and Slavery in New York (co-edited with Ira Berlin) \nJamila Brathwaite\, a trustee of the African American Historical Society of Rockland County. She is an educator and curator and has worked to uncover the hidden history of the people of the African Diaspora\, including “Little Africa\,” a Black community\, which flourished during the 19th century in New York City’s Greenwich Village. \nJohn Reddick\, an architectural historian and Columbia University Community Scholar who is actively engaged in Harlem’s culture\, art and preservation. He’s lectured and published broadly\, and recently served as a curator and discussion leader for the Harlem Focus series at the Smithsonian Institution’s Cooper-Hewitt Design Center.
