SUMMARY:Culture Of: Intimacy
DESCRIPTION:A Deep Dive Into The Spectrum Of Connection\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nWhen you read the word: intimacy what comes to mind? Is it something sexual? Something funny? Something sad? Fact. Nearly half of Americans have experienced deeper intimacy in their dreams than in real life. In nonfiction’s “Intimacy In America” Report\, 21% of Americans say they have no one in their lives they can be 100% themselves with. We’re craving intimate connections and yet avoiding them like the plague. Vulnerability seems to be “on trend” but when “everyone’s doing it\,” it almost feels inauthentic. Yeah…we feel that too. But we think there’s a better way. \nCome get comfortable with intimacy. Intimacy requires us to know ourselves before we can connect with another and ultimate with those around us. We’re exploring the spectrum of connection in three ways: self\, one-to-one and community. We’ll start with a few curated experiences then hear from dope speakers from all walks of life. A spoken word playwrighting wordsmith\, a painter\, an ex-dating coach\, an author and some surprises along the way. \nLocation \nA mansion filled with art. So yes we’re psyched. \nFood Partner \nDos Toros brings the best of the San Francisco taqueria experience to the rest of the country.

SUMMARY:Taking on White Nationalist Violence
DESCRIPTION:Waves of white nationalist violence have spread across the nation\, from Charlottesville to Pittsburgh\, El Paso and beyond. Now\, a landmark lawsuit against the organizers of the 2017 Charlottesville march is taking on the leadership of this movement — asserting that they intentionally coordinated the violence that erupted\, thus breaking the law. \nLed by Roberta Kaplan (lead counsel on the Supreme Court case that led to the legalization of same-sex marriage) and Karen Dunn (a former federal prosecutor in Virginia)\, the legal action — filed against a broad range of neo-Nazis\, white supremacists and affiliated hate groups — exposes the individuals and organizations driving the wave of white supremacist hate and dismantles the infrastructure at the center of their movement. The suit is supported by the civil rights nonprofit Integrity First for America. \nJoin us for a discussion of the lawsuit and its potential to turn back the tide of hate with: \nRoberta Kaplan\, Co-Lead Counsel \nKaren Dunn\, Co-Lead Counsel  \nAmy Spitalnick\, Executive Director\, Integrity First for America  \nElizabeth Sines\, Plaintiff

SUMMARY:What Nostalgia Was: The History of a Deadly Emotion
DESCRIPTION:People once died of nostalgia. While we all recognize nostalgia when we see it\, and know that it “ain’t what it used to be\,” few of us are familiar with what it once was. This talk uncovers the forgotten medical history of nostalgia from the term’s invention in Switzerland in 1688 to the disease’s demise in colonial north Africa in the late nineteenth century. By tracing the scientific and social conditions of possibility of this deadly form of nostalgia\, Thomas Dodman seeks to grasp it as a specifically modern psychological condition and thus show the historicity of our emotions. \nEvent Speaker\nThomas Dodman is the Director of Undergraduate Studies and Assistant Professor of French at Columbia University. He is a historian of modern France and its empire. Thomas Dodman’s research grapples with forms and experiences of social change in the modern era.

SUMMARY:The Psychology of Love
DESCRIPTION:What is Love? How many of us have tried\, in vain\, to love an objectively great person only to have our attention gripped by the swagger or sway of the bad boy or girl? What’s the point of dismissing the billions of others in favor of just one? \n\n\n\n\n\nIt turns out that love may function as a commitment device\, providing a solution for a class of social dilemmas termed commitment problems. \n\n\n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Dr. Lawrence Ian Reed\, clinical assistant professor at NYU\, will provide a theoretical framework for love that will answer these questions and others. All to help us all get lucky in love.

SUMMARY:The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Origin of Western Civilization
DESCRIPTION:Public Lecture Series with with Dr. Adolfo D. Roitman \nMore than 70 years ago\, Bedouin shepherds discovered a series of jars containing scrolls in a cave in the West Bank. In the years since they have sparked enormous interest in researchers and the public alike. \nJoin Dr. Roitman as he leads you on the journey of the Dead Sea Scrolls\, from their discovery and excavations in Khirbet Qumran to their contributions to civilization. Drawing on his experience as curator of the Dead Sea Scrolls at Israel Museum–home to the eight most complete and well preserved manuscripts in the world–Dr. Roitman will clarify some key issues surrounding their discovery\, and present the current state of research on the scrolls themselves. \n\nDr. Adolfo D. Roitman has served as the head of the Shrine of the Book and the Lizbeth and George Krupp Curator of the Dead Sea Scrolls at the Israel Museum for more than 25 years.
