SUMMARY:The Power of Political Satire on TV
DESCRIPTION:As the New Yorker recently noted\, comedians and satirists do more “than simply comment upon politics; they help shape it.” Political satire on television truly exploded with the debut of The Daily Show twenty years ago and now permeates all media throughout the day from podcasts to The View to the late night shows. As we head into the presidential election\, the Paley Center is gathering satirists from different generations and persuasions to discuss the potency of humor to change politics and the type of leaders whom we elect. \nIN PERSON\nDavid Cross\, Actor\, Writer\, Comedian (Mr. Show\, Arrested Development)\nDave Smith\, Comedian and Political Commentator\nLizz Winstead\, Cocreator\, The Daily Show\nElayne Boosler\, Comedian and Writer\nModerator: Vinson Cunningham\, Staff Writer\, The New Yorker

SUMMARY:Ask Dr. Ruth: Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Moderator Annette Insdorf will interview Dr. Ruth Westheimer after a screening of Ask Dr. Ruth\, the acclaimed documentary about the trailblazing sex therapist and educator. \nDirected by Ryan White\, this cinematic portrait—which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival (where Vanity Fair called it an Oscar contender)\, before its theatrical release and streaming on Hulu—follows the feisty\, 4/7″ powerhouse\, who still advocates for a non-judgmental understanding of human sexuality. \nAsk Dr. Ruth traces her evolution from an uprooted “Kindertransport” orphan in Switzerland\, to a sniper in Israel’s War of Independence\, a student in France\, and ultimately a New York media celebrity and teacher (Hunter College as well as Columbia University Teachers College). \nDr. Ruth’s popular radio show\, Sexually Speaking\, had an immeasurable impact at a time when candid discussion of sex was taboo. Her next domain was television\, where she not only engaged in frank talk\, but called sympathetic attention to the AIDS crisis.

SUMMARY:The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Film Screening & Author Talk with Joseph Lanza
DESCRIPTION:When Tobe Hooper’s low-budget slasher film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre opened in theaters in 1974\, it was met in equal measure with loathing and reverence. The film was banned in several countries and was pulled from many American theaters after complaints of its violence. Despite the mixed reception from critics\, it was enormously profitable at the domestic box office and has since secured its place as one of the most influential horror movies ever made. \nIn The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: The Film That Rattled a Terrified Nation\, author and cultural critic Joseph Lanza turns his attention to the production\, reception\, social climate\, and impact of this controversial movie that rattled the American public. \nThe Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Rated R) will be screened in its entirety followed by a Q&A with Mr. Lanza. The author will have limited copies of his new book for sale and signing.
