SUMMARY:Growing Up in Science: Jacqueline Gottlieb's Unofficial Story
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will begin at 4:00 pm at the Jerome L. Greene Science Center\, room L7-119. \nJacqueline Gottlieb\, PhD studies the mechanisms that underlie the brain’s higher cognitive functions\, including decision making\, memory\, and attention. Her interest is in how the brain gathers the evidence it needs — and ignores what it doesn’t — during everyday tasks and during special states such as curiosity. Her research could offer insight into disorders that involve deficits of attention\, such as attention deficit disorder\, depression and drug addiction. \nGrowing Up in Science is a seminar series initiated at NYU by Drs. Wei Ji Ma and Cristina Alberini in 2014. The speakers of this series do not talk about their science; they talk about the human side of becoming and being a scientist. They share their successes as well as the struggles\, weaknesses\, detours and failures.

SUMMARY:The Enigma of Clarence Thomas: A Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for The Enigma of Clarence Thomas: A Conversation between Corey Robin\, the author of The Enigma of Clarence Thomas (Metropolitan Books\, 2019) and Professor of Political Science at Brooklyn College and The Graduate Center\, CUNY\, and Kendall Thomas\, Nash Professor of Law at Columbia Law School\, on December 4\, 2019 at 6:30PM in the Kelly Skylight Room of The Graduate Center\, CUNY. \nIn The Enigma of Clarence Thomas\, the first examination of its kind\, Corey Robin delves deeply into both Thomas’s biography and his jurisprudence\, masterfully reading his Supreme Court opinions against the backdrop of his autobiographical and political writings and speeches. The hidden source of Thomas’s conservative views\, Robin shows\, is a profound skepticism that racism can be overcome. Thomas is convinced that any government action on behalf of African-Americans will be tainted by racism; the most African-Americans can hope for is that white people will get out of their way. \nCorey Robin is the author of The Reactionary Mind: Conservatism from Edmund Burke to Donald Trump and Fear: The History of a Political Idea. He teaches political science at Brooklyn College and The Graduate Center\, CUNY. Robin’s writing has appeared in the New York Times\, the New Yorker\, Harper’s\, and the London Review of Books\, among other publications\, and has been translated into thirteen languages. He lives in Brooklyn\, New York. \nKendall Thomas is the Nash Professor of Law and co-founder and director of the Center for the Study of Law and Culture at Columbia Law School. His teaching and research interests include U.S. and comparative constitutional law\, human rights\, legal philosophy\, feminist legal theory\, critical race theory\, and law and sexuality. His writings have appeared in several academic journals and volumes of collected essays. Thomas is a co-editor of Critical Race Theory: The Key Writings that Founded the Movement\, The New Press\, 1996\, and What’s Left of Theory?\, Routledge Press\, 2000.

SUMMARY:Medieval Medicine and Literature: A Galenic Presence in Dante’s Writing
DESCRIPTION:The attention to the relation between medieval medicine and Dante’s writing shows how contemporary scientific thought manifests itself both in evident and less explicit terms\, which allude not to exclusively scientific concepts\, but to structures of thought shared by other contemporary intellectual discussions\, such as philosophy\, ethics\, political thought. This lecture investigates how the manifest incidence of strictly medical – and more precisely Galenic – notions\, such as complexio or the hegemonic principle which rules the human being – permits the investigation of a more oblique presence\, where medicine contributes to the formation of complex and multifaceted content. \nA lecture by Paola Ureni\, CUNY.

SUMMARY:Neuroscience and the Study of Intergenerational Trauma: How Does the Remote Past Get Under Our Skin?
DESCRIPTION:How do we “remember” things that did not happen to us? Neuroscience has made remarkable discoveries about ways in which our brains and bodies can be affected by traumatic experiences of our parents. We know that children born to survivors of cataclysmic events are themselves more susceptible to stress\, and at greater risk of mental illnesses like PTSD\, despite never having experienced the trauma themselves. Epigenetics\, the in-utero environment\, early experiences\, and the parent-child relationship all play a role. These discoveries have spurred a compelling field of research into intergenerational trauma\, revealing a complexity of biological and psychological interactions determining risk or resilience – but what does this new knowledge mean for survivors and their children? Scholars in the humanities and arts have long explored the lived experiences of those who feel they have inherited trauma from past generations. What can neuroscientists learn from these explorations\, and what can other disciplines take from advances in neuroscience? We hear from pioneering researchers\, clinicians\, and scholars as they make sense of how the remote past gets under the skin to affect the present. \nSpeakers:\nFrances Champagne\, PhD\, Professor of Psychology\, University of Texas at Austin\nGabriele M. Schwab\, PhD\, Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature\, University of California\, Irvine\nRachel Yehuda\, PhD\, Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience\, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai \n  \nDiscussant:\nMarianne Hirsch\, PhD\, William Peterfield Trent Professor of English and Comparative Literature\, Columbia University \n\nModerator:\nClare McCormack\, PhD\, Presidential Scholar in Society and Neuroscience\, Columbia University \n  \nFree and open to the public\, but RSVP is required via Eventbrite. This event is part of the Seminars in Society and Neuroscience series.

SUMMARY:What’s a Brain For? A Moving Story
DESCRIPTION:Neuroscientist Daniel Wolpert\, PhD\, is fascinated by how the brain controls our every movement. The ease with which humans move our arms\, our eyes\, even our lips when we speak masks the true complexity of the control. While computers can now beat grandmasters at chess\, no computer can yet control a robot to manipulate a chess piece with the dexterity of a six-year-old child. Join Dr. Wolpert as he discusses what makes control so hard\, especially in the face of incomplete or rapidly changing information about the world. \nThis conversation will be moderated by Shreya Saxena\, PhD\, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Center for Theoretical Neuroscience at Columbia’s Zuckerman Institute.

SUMMARY:Festival Albertine: How Do We Get People to Care
DESCRIPTION:Artists and activists will be called upon to discuss how to change people’s minds and amplify the call to action.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLiterature\, music\, drama—these are key resources for societies trying to come to grips with new realities. In recent years we’ve seen them begin to grapple with climate change\, but that engagement must now grow. The arts have traditionally engaged with what seemed the most dramatic questions: the struggles of one set of human beings with another. That struggle is still underway\, of course\, but now we’ve added something different: the terrifying drama of people with a suddenly angry natural world. How does this new moment redefine what we think about when we take up brush or pen\, camera or keyboard? What is the work of a poet in a world on fire\, or an orchestra in a city where the seas are rising?\n\nWith Irina Brook\, Lauren Groff\, Fabrice Hyber\, and Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky. Moderated by Bill McKibben.

SUMMARY:Cornel West Matters: Book Talk with Mahamadou Lamine Sagna and Cornel West
DESCRIPTION:Join The Africa Center and Teranga as we present a conversation between Mahamadou Lamine Sagna and Cornel West about “Cornel West Matters”. \nThe book Cornel West Matters is a review of the titular philosopher’s seminal texts by Mahamadou Lamine Sagna\, who has long been interested in the way West analyses politics\, democracy\, religion and race\, and their intersections in America. It is also an analysis of the way West brings religion and music – particularly blues and jazz – into philosophy.

SUMMARY:Lincoln Center White Light Conversation: Let’s Talk About Religion
DESCRIPTION:God was declared dead in 1966\, no longer relevant to an increasingly secular society. Today\, people around the world ardently seek religious and faith-based experiences\, at times with an intolerant fervor. How did we vacillate between such extremes in the span of only half a century? In modern society\, few topics are as subject to ignorance\, misunderstanding\, and manipulation as religion. Although it is a central building block of human consciousness\, we possess surprisingly little knowledge about religious traditions—both of others and our own. From a more generalized “spirituality” to intersections with science and art\, religion has continued to powerfully resonate in our current challenging climate. Join WNYC’s John Schaefer and a group of leading thinkers for a spirited panel discussion exploring the many contradictions inherent in our understanding of religion and the evolutionary pathways of religious belief. \nSeating is limited\, and is available on a first-come\, first-served basis. \n  \nSpeakers: \nJohn Schaefer\, moderator \nKelly Brown Douglas\, dean of the Episcopal Divinity School\, Union Theological Seminary \nMarcelo Gleiser\, theoretical physicist and astronomer \nJames MacMillan\, composer \nStephen Prothero\, author\, Religious Literacy

SUMMARY:Simons Foundation Presents: The Math Puzzle That Spawned 100 Philosophy Papers
DESCRIPTION:At first glance\, the Sleeping Beauty problem appears to be a simple question about probability. But since being proposed 19 years ago by philosopher Adam Elga\, the problem has incited passionate debate in the philosophy community. \nIn this talk\, Peter Winkler will describe the famous thought problem about a dozy princess being awoken once or twice depending on the toss of a coin. Can it really be that the laws of probability do not provide a unique correct answer? Winkler will take a mathematician’s point of view while at the same time trying to elucidate the philosophical principles that the puzzle calls into question. He’ll describe the various camps in the controversy and examine their arguments. In the end\, you’ll have to decide for yourself where you stand. \nWinkler is the William Morrill Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Dartmouth College and is currently serving as Visiting Distinguished Chair for Public Dissemination of Mathematics at the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath).

SUMMARY:AMNH Presents: SciCafe: Climate Change and Rising Sea Levels
DESCRIPTION:The ongoing pollution of our atmosphere with an invisible odorless gas called carbon dioxide is trapping heat at the Earth’s surface and causing temperatures to rise on land and in the ocean. The polar regions are warming fastest of all and the melting ice sheets are causing sea levels to rise around the globe. How fast climate changes in the future will depend on our collective actions as individuals\, families\, communities\, and governments. In this presentation\, paleoclimatologist Maureen Raymo will review evidence for climate change\, natural and manmade\, and explore how ice sheets and sea level changed in the past.

SUMMARY:Math Encounters: “Tales of Impossibility: The Problems of Antiquity” with David Richeson
DESCRIPTION:“Nothing is impossible!”  While it is comforting to believe this greeting card sentiment — it’s the American dream\, after all — there are impossible things.  Ancient Greek geometers and future generations of mathematicians tried and failed to square circles\, trisect angles\, double cubes\, and construct regular polygons using only a compass and straightedge.  Join David Richeson\, Professor of Mathematics at Dickinson College and Editor of Math Horizons\, to try your hand at some of these unusual geometric construction techniques.  But get ready to fail — after two thousand years\, all four of these “problems of antiquity” have been proved to be mathematically impossible! \n4pm and 7pm sessions. \nLight refreshments will be served after the 4:00 pm session and at 6:30 in advance of the second session.
