SUMMARY:AMNH Presents: SciCafe: Climate Change and Rising Sea Levels
DESCRIPTION:The ongoing pollution of our atmosphere with an invisible odorless gas called carbon dioxide is trapping heat at the Earth’s surface and causing temperatures to rise on land and in the ocean. The polar regions are warming fastest of all and the melting ice sheets are causing sea levels to rise around the globe. How fast climate changes in the future will depend on our collective actions as individuals\, families\, communities\, and governments. In this presentation\, paleoclimatologist Maureen Raymo will review evidence for climate change\, natural and manmade\, and explore how ice sheets and sea level changed in the past.

SUMMARY:Math Encounters: “Tales of Impossibility: The Problems of Antiquity” with David Richeson
DESCRIPTION:“Nothing is impossible!”  While it is comforting to believe this greeting card sentiment — it’s the American dream\, after all — there are impossible things.  Ancient Greek geometers and future generations of mathematicians tried and failed to square circles\, trisect angles\, double cubes\, and construct regular polygons using only a compass and straightedge.  Join David Richeson\, Professor of Mathematics at Dickinson College and Editor of Math Horizons\, to try your hand at some of these unusual geometric construction techniques.  But get ready to fail — after two thousand years\, all four of these “problems of antiquity” have been proved to be mathematically impossible! \n4pm and 7pm sessions. \nLight refreshments will be served after the 4:00 pm session and at 6:30 in advance of the second session.

SUMMARY:Sympathy for the Drummer: Why Charlie Watts Matters Book Launch/Signing
DESCRIPTION:Across five decades\, Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts has had the best seat in the house. Charlie Watts\, the anti-rock star—an urbane jazz fan with a dry wit and little taste for the limelight—was witness to the most savage years in rock history\, and emerged a hero\, a warrior poet. Author Mike Edison\, himself a notorious raconteur and accomplished drummer\, tells a tale of respect and satisfaction that goes far beyond drums\, drumming\, and the Rolling Stones\, ripping apart the history of rock’n’roll\, and celebrating sixty years of cultural upheaval. \n

SUMMARY:Philosophy Workshop on Joel Whitebook's Freud: An Intellectual Biography
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Joel Whitebook\, Philosopher and Psychoanalyst\, will discuss his book Freud: An Intellectual Biography. \nCutting through the tired clichés of the “Freud Wars\,” the author presents us with a radically new portrait of the founder of psychoanalysis. Because Whitebook is a philosopher as well as a psychoanalyst\, he has been able to integrate many of the profound transformations that have taken place in psychoanalytic theory and practice\, infant research\, gender studies\, philosophy\, and critical theory since Ernest Jones and Peter Gay published their canonical studies in the last century. Whitebook thereby succeeds in creating an account of Freud’s achievement that speaks to our cultural situation. \nFurthermore\, in addition to presenting the unfolding of Freud’s thinking in the context of the developments in his personal life and in the society at large\, Whitebook has also succeeded in bringing this iconic man to life in compelling fashion. Where Freud often tried to protect himself by hiding behind the forbidding mask of an authoritarian patriarch and unbending rationalist\, we come to see him as the vulnerable\, complex\, and all-too-human person that he was.

SUMMARY:The Jewish Dead in Literature and Lore
DESCRIPTION:What happens when the line between the dead and the living gets transgressed? Join us for a haunting lecture as we explore this gray area in Jewish lore\, literature\, and culture. Hear from Jonathan Boyarin as he delves into examples that are both familiar and not and shows us that though we try to preserve tidy lines separating the dead from the world of the living\, careful borders which delineate our modern reality\, we still remain uneasy. By examining these Jewish ghosts\, we find that our discomfort with the afterlife might in fact result from our insistence on these walls. \nJonathan Boyarin is the Diann G. and Thomas A. Mann Professor of Modern Jewish Studies at Cornell University\, where he teaches in the departments of anthropology and Near Eastern Studies.

SUMMARY:The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Film Screening & Author Talk with Joseph Lanza
DESCRIPTION:When Tobe Hooper’s low-budget slasher film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre opened in theaters in 1974\, it was met in equal measure with loathing and reverence. The film was banned in several countries and was pulled from many American theaters after complaints of its violence. Despite the mixed reception from critics\, it was enormously profitable at the domestic box office and has since secured its place as one of the most influential horror movies ever made. \nIn The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: The Film That Rattled a Terrified Nation\, author and cultural critic Joseph Lanza turns his attention to the production\, reception\, social climate\, and impact of this controversial movie that rattled the American public. \nThe Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Rated R) will be screened in its entirety followed by a Q&A with Mr. Lanza. The author will have limited copies of his new book for sale and signing.

SUMMARY:Primo Levi and Friendship in the Camp
DESCRIPTION:Uri Cohen: Affection and Survival: Primo Levi and Friendship in the Camp \nAffection is a lesser known aspect of the human and Jewish experience in the camps. Mostly it is related to the fractured past of which the camp is the present. Having written some of the essential pages on the human experience in the Lager\, Primo Levi continued contemplating and writing about it throughout his life. This talk will question affection in Levi’s writing and its place in the camp as a strategy of survival. Affection saves\, but it also prompts Levi’s internal inquiry that leads to the heart of his defining conceptual innovation: the Gray Zone. \nUri S. Cohen holds a PhD. from the Hebrew University and has served on the faculty of Columbia University (2004-2011).

SUMMARY:Changing Two Minds Is Better Than One: Seminars in Society and Neuroscience
DESCRIPTION:Join the Presidential Scholars in Society and Neuroscience for “Changing Two Minds Is Better Than One: Biological and Behavioral Experimentation Within Complex Social Relationships.” Experimental interventions are becoming an increasingly popular research methodology in the neural and social sciences. Conventionally\, animal and human intervention studies try to reduce the variability and complexity of the environment as much as possible. These studies focus on independent individuals\, randomly assigning each one to either an experimental condition (intervention) or control condition\, and look for changes to the brain and behavior. This seminar is not about conventional intervention research. Instead\, we spotlight novel research designs that examine interdependent individuals embedded within complex relational systems\, from the interactions of couples\, to middle-school friendships\, to parent-child dynamics. \nEvent Participants:\nSpeakers:\n\nZoe Donaldson\, Assistant Professor of Behavioral Neuroscience\, University of Colorado Boulder\nHoward Markman\, John Evans Distinguished Professor of Psychology\, Co-Director of the Center for Marital and Family Studies\, University of Denver\nHana Shepherd\, Assistant Professor of Sociology\, Rutgers University\n\nModerator:\n\nNoam Zerubavel\, Presidential Scholar in Society and Neuroscience\, Columbia University
