DESCRIPTION:Dr. Joel Whitebook\, Philosopher and Psychoanalyst\, will discuss his book Freud: An Intellectual Biography. \nCutting through the tired clichés of the “Freud Wars\,” the author presents us with a radically new portrait of the founder of psychoanalysis. Because Whitebook is a philosopher as well as a psychoanalyst\, he has been able to integrate many of the profound transformations that have taken place in psychoanalytic theory and practice\, infant research\, gender studies\, philosophy\, and critical theory since Ernest Jones and Peter Gay published their canonical studies in the last century. Whitebook thereby succeeds in creating an account of Freud’s achievement that speaks to our cultural situation. \nFurthermore\, in addition to presenting the unfolding of Freud’s thinking in the context of the developments in his personal life and in the society at large\, Whitebook has also succeeded in bringing this iconic man to life in compelling fashion. Where Freud often tried to protect himself by hiding behind the forbidding mask of an authoritarian patriarch and unbending rationalist\, we come to see him as the vulnerable\, complex\, and all-too-human person that he was.

DESCRIPTION:What happens when the line between the dead and the living gets transgressed? Join us for a haunting lecture as we explore this gray area in Jewish lore\, literature\, and culture. Hear from Jonathan Boyarin as he delves into examples that are both familiar and not and shows us that though we try to preserve tidy lines separating the dead from the world of the living\, careful borders which delineate our modern reality\, we still remain uneasy. By examining these Jewish ghosts\, we find that our discomfort with the afterlife might in fact result from our insistence on these walls. \nJonathan Boyarin is the Diann G. and Thomas A. Mann Professor of Modern Jewish Studies at Cornell University\, where he teaches in the departments of anthropology and Near Eastern Studies.

Despite the mixed reception from critics\, it was enormously profitable at the domestic box office and has since secured its place as one of the most influential horror movies ever made. \nIn The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: The Film That Rattled a Terrified Nation\, author and cultural critic Joseph Lanza turns his attention to the production\, reception\, social climate\, and impact of this controversial movie that rattled the American public. \nThe Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Rated R) will be screened in its entirety followed by a Q&A with Mr. Lanza. DESCRIPTION:Uri Cohen: Affection and Survival: Primo Levi and Friendship in the Camp \nAffection is a lesser known aspect of the human and Jewish experience in the camps. Mostly it is related to the fractured past of which the camp is the present. Having written some of the essential pages on the human experience in the Lager\, Primo Levi continued contemplating and writing about it throughout his life. This talk will question affection in Levi’s writing and its place in the camp as a strategy of survival. Affection saves\, but it also prompts Levi’s internal inquiry that leads to the heart of his defining conceptual innovation: the Gray Zone. \nUri S. Cohen holds a PhD. from the Hebrew University and has served on the faculty of Columbia University (2004-2011).

DESCRIPTION:Join the Presidential Scholars in Society and Neuroscience for “Changing Two Minds Is Better Than One: Biological and Behavioral Experimentation Within Complex Social Relationships.” Experimental interventions are becoming an increasingly popular research methodology in the neural and social sciences. Conventionally\, animal and human intervention studies try to reduce the variability and complexity of the environment as much as possible. These studies focus on independent individuals\, randomly assigning each one to either an experimental condition (intervention) or control condition\, and look for changes to the brain and behavior. This seminar is not about conventional intervention research. In wide-ranging essays that are at once poetic and polemical\, intellectual and passionate\, Gourgouris reads across politics and theology\, literary and art criticism\, psychoanalysis and feminism in a critique of both political theology and the metaphysics of secularism. \nAbout the Speakers: \nHent de Vries is Paulette Goddard Professor of the Humanities at NYU. He is Professor of  German\, Religious Studies\, Comparative Literature\, and Affiliated Professor of Philosophy. \nBruce Robbins\, Old Dominion Foundation Professor in the Humanities at Columbia University\, works mainly in the areas of nineteenth and twentieth century fiction\, literary and cultural theory\, and postcolonial studies. \nLydia H. Liu is the Wun Tsun Tam Professor in the Humanities at Columbia University; Director\, Institute for Comparative Literature and Society. Her research centers on modern China\, cross-cultural exchange\, and global transformation in modern history\, with a focus on the movement of words\, theories\, and artifacts across national boundaries and on the evolution of writing\, textuality\, and media technology. \nEtienne Balibar\, Professor of French and Comparative Literature\, teaches at Columbia every Fall semester. SUMMARY:Camille Robcis | Disalienation: Politics\, Philosophy\, and Radical Psychiatry in France
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the intersections of politics\, philosophy\, and radical psychiatry in 20th century France. It focuses on a psychiatric reform movement called “institutional psychotherapy” which had an important influence on many intellectuals and activists\, including François Tosquelles\, Jean Oury\, Felix Guattari\, Frantz Fanon\, Georges Canguilhem\, and Michel Foucault. Anchored in Marxism and in Lacanian psychoanalysis\, institutional psychotherapy advocated a fundamental restructuring of the asylum in order to transform the theory and practice of psychiatric care. More broadly\, for many of these thinkers\, the psychiatric offered a lens to rethink the political in the particular context of postwar France. \nCamille Robcis is an Associate Professor of History and French at Columbia University.

DESCRIPTION:As part of NYU Skirball Talks\, the NYU Department of German and Deutsches Haus at NYU present “Disorder under Heaven” with Slavoj Žižek. \nInternational relations\, in biotechnology\, in sexual relations…But it is here that we should remember Mao’s old motto: “There is great disorder under heaven\, so the situation is excellent!” Let’s not lose nerves\, let’s exploit the confusion as a chance to propose a new radical vision. In January 2019\, an international team of scientists proposed “a diet it says can improve health while ensuring sustainable food production to reduce further damage to the planet.” We are talking about a radical reorganization of our entire food production and distribution—so how to do it? Is it not clear that a strong global agency is needed with the power to coordinate such measures? And is not such an agency pointing in the direction of what we once called “Communism”? And does the same not hold for other threats to our survival as humans? Is a similar global agency not needed also to deal with the problem of increasing numbers of refugees and immigrants\, with the problem of digital control over our lives? Let’s not be afraid to tackle the problem of the new order that the ongoing disorder is calling for. \nSlavoj Žižek will be introduced by Xudong Zhang\, Professor of Comparative Literature & East Asian Studies\, and Director of China House at NYU.
