SUMMARY:Sarah Woolley: Singing in the Brain
DESCRIPTION:The young brain learning to communicate with hearing and voice builds auditory and vocal motor circuits that are functionally coupled to perceive and produce particular sounds. Sarah Woolley has helped decode how the brain interprets vocalizations — and what happens during development when those sounds are disrupted. Her research could shed important light on developmental disorders associated with speech and communication. In this conversation\, Dr. Woolley will discuss progress using songbirds to understand how early social experience tunes the auditory system for vocal communication. \nEvent Speaker:\nSarah Woolley\, PhD is Professor and former Chair in the Department of Psychology at Columbia University. She directs the Communication Neuroscience Laboratory in the Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute and is a member of the Kavli Institute for Brain Science.

SUMMARY:Jessica Valenti and Jaclyn Friedman: Believe Me
DESCRIPTION:Harvey Weinstein. Brett Kavanaugh. Jeffrey Epstein. Donald Trump. The most infamous abusers in modern American history are being outed as women speak up to publicly expose behavior that was previously only whispered about — and it’s both making an impact\, and sparking a backlash. From the leading\, agenda-setting feminist editors of Yes Means Yes\, Believe Me brings readers into the evolving landscape of the movement against sexual violence\, and outlines how trusting women is the critical foundation for future progress. \nIn Believe Me\, contributors ask and answer the crucial question: What would happen if we didn’t just believe women\, but acted as though they matter? If we take women’s experiences of online harassment seriously\, it will transform the internet. If we listen to and center survivors\, we could revolutionize our systems of justice. If we believe Black women when they talk about pain\, we will save countless lives. \nMoira Donegan is a writer and feminist living in New York. She is an opinion columnist at the Guardian and a former editor of n+1 and the New Republic. Her work has appeared in the New York Times\, the London Review of Books\, the Paris Review\, and elsewhere. \nJaclyn Friedman is a popular speaker and opinion writer and the host of “Unscrewed\,” named a Best Sex Podcast by both Marie Claire and Esquire. \nMatt Lubchansky is the associate editor of the Nib and a cartoonist and illustrator living in Queens. SUMMARY:The Hard Problem of Consciousness: Philosophical Discussion\, TED Circle
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, one of the toughest nuts to crack in both philosophy and science has been the so-called “hard problem of consciousness”: How is it possible for the hard-wiring of our brain to produce inner perception\, sentient experience\, and self-awareness? \nIt’s a much more difficult conundrum to solve than one might expect upon first glance. \nBecause science is inherently objective\, while consciousness is subjective\, it has been very difficult for experts working from both sides of the divide to bridge this gap – to explain the precise mechanisms of conscious experience. \nBefore arriving at this event\, take a peek at the following video: \n“How Do You Explain Consciousness?” – David Chalmers – https://youtu.be/uhRhtFFhNzQ \nA brief presentation will be given to start this event – summarizing some of the prevailing research and viewpoints on the Hard Problem of Consciousness. \nWe will then explore a number of interesting extensions of this topic together. \nPLEASE FEEL FREE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ACTIVE DISCUSSION\, OR SIMPLY COME TO LISTEN – based upon your own comfort level with this topic and its many facets. This is a highly complex subject\, and everyone is most welcome to join us at this event!

SUMMARY:Jason Haber – Futurecity: A Look at the Past\, Present\, and Future of NYC and Cities Around the World
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in history\, more people live in cities than in rural areas. By 2050\, another 2 billion people will occupancy our planet\, with two-thirds of them living in cities. While we have reached unprecedented population growth\, our planet is under siege and many of our cities\, including our own\, are ill-prepared for the coming storm. From climate change\, infrastructure\, housing\, health care and transportation\, cities will face historic challenges to meet the demands of the 21st century. How do cities meet these challenges and thrive in the face of them? In FutureCity\, Jason takes the audience through the history of cities\, and explores contemporary issues that are key to their survival and success. For New York\, this requires a further embrace of Jane Jacobs\, while moving on from the cen-centric policies of Robert Moses. \nJason Haber is a serial and social entrepreneur.

SUMMARY:Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment Is Killing America's Heartland
DESCRIPTION:With the rise of the Tea Party and the election of Donald Trump\, many middle- and lower-income white Americans threw their support behind conservative politicians who pledged to make life great again for people like them. As Jonathan Metzl shows\, the right-wing policies that resulted from this white backlash put these voters’ very health at risk—and in the end\, threaten everyone’s well-being. Having interviewed a range of Americans\, he uncovers how racial anxieties led to the repeal of gun control laws in Missouri\, stymied the Affordable Care Act in Tennessee\, and fueled massive cuts to schools and social services in Kansas. Although such measures promised to restore greatness to white America\, Metzl’s systematic analysis of health data dramatically reveals they did just the opposite: these policies made life sicker\, harder\, and shorter in the very populations they purported to aid. Thus\, white gun suicides soared\, life expectancies fell\, and school dropout rates rose. Based on his new book of the same title\, Metzl’s talk demonstrates just how much white America would benefit by emphasizing cooperation\, rather than by chasing false promises of supremacy. \nAbout the Speaker \nJonathan Metzl is the Frederick B. Rentschler II Professor of Sociology and Psychiatry\, and the Director of the Center for Medicine\, Health\, and Society\, at Vanderbilt University in Nashville\, Tennessee.

SUMMARY:Ultra-Spooky Action at a Distance: From Quantum Materials in the Lab to Black Holes
DESCRIPTION:The strangest feature of quantum theory was dubbed “spooky action at a distance” by Albert Einstein. Today\, scientists have convincing evidence that two quantum particles far apart can entangle with each other such that the observation of one can instantaneously determine the state of the other. \nIn this lecture\, Subir Sachdev will describe how this quantum feature is playing a central role in many modern developments in physics. Quantum entanglement can occur on a macroscopic scale with trillions of electrons\, leading to new forms of ‘ultra-quantum matter’ with properties of technological importance. In high-temperature superconductors\, such as YBa2Cu3O7\, there appears to be a ‘quantum critical point’ whose entanglement structure is being explored by experiment and theory. Related entanglement structures arise across black hole horizons\, and recent advances have shed new light on Stephen Hawking’s information paradox. Sachdev will use simple models of entanglement to describe these mutually beneficial developments across different fields of physics. \n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\nSubir Sachdev studied at the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi\, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University. He is now the Herchel Smith Professor of Physics and department chair of physics at Harvard University.
