SUMMARY:Let's Talk About Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Think about all the times you’ve seen mental illness depicted on TV\, in movies\, and in the general media. How many times was it NOT mined for humor\, shock value\, horror\, or sensationalism? How often was it made HUMAN and REAL? Come to our show where we hope to explore and explode some of the myths that are still goin strong in 2019. \nThe show will feature performers\, all of whom will talk about their mental health journey. There will be audience participation in the form of Q&A after each performer speaks. \nSuggested donation of $10 that will be divided between National Alliance on Mental Illness and QED. \nLet’s Talk About Mental Health

SUMMARY:It’s Time to Expand Nuclear Power with Bill Nye
DESCRIPTION:For decades\, the development of nuclear power has sparked staunch debate among scientists\, politicians\, and activists alike. For its proponents\, the promise of nuclear energy is clear: It’s the most effective means of reducing greenhouse gases and combating climate change while still meeting the world’s growing demand for energy. And to date\, nuclear energy produces approximately 10% of the world’s power and rakes in billions in revenue in the United States alone. But its critics argue that expanding nuclear energy is dangerous and ill-advised. They cite the high costs of building powerplants\, the potential consequences of a meltdown\, and the challenge of managing waste. Rather\, they argue\, we should look to wind and solar to meet our energy demands. Should nuclear energy fuel our future? \n\nKEYNOTE CONVERSATION\n\n\n\nBill Nye\nScientist and CEO of the Planetary Society\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTHE DEBATERS FOR THE MOTION\n\n\n\n\nKirsty Gogan\nCo-founder and Executive Director of Energy for Humanity\n\n\n\n\n\nDaniel Poneman\nPresident and CEO of Centrus Energy\n\n\n\n\n\nAGAINST THE MOTION\n\n\nGregory B. SUMMARY:How to Keep Your Cool
DESCRIPTION:In his essay “On Anger\,” the Roman Stoic thinker Seneca argues that anger is the most destructive passion. \nThis lecture\, from James Romm\, editor\, translator\, and Professor of Classics at Bard College offers us a timeless guide to avoiding and managing anger. It vividly illustrates why the emotion is so dangerous and why controlling it would bring vast benefits to individuals and society. \nSeneca’s thoughts on anger have never been more relevant than today\, when uncivil discourse has increasingly infected public debate. Whether seeking personal growth or political renewal\, readers will find\, in Seneca’s wisdom\, a valuable antidote to the ills of an angry age. \nA book signing follows the event.

SUMMARY:Ultra-Spooky Action at a Distance: From Quantum Materials in the Lab to Black Holes
DESCRIPTION:The strangest feature of quantum theory was dubbed “spooky action at a distance” by Albert Einstein. Today\, scientists have convincing evidence that two quantum particles far apart can entangle with each other such that the observation of one can instantaneously determine the state of the other. \nIn this lecture\, Subir Sachdev will describe how this quantum feature is playing a central role in many modern developments in physics. Quantum entanglement can occur on a macroscopic scale with trillions of electrons\, leading to new forms of ‘ultra-quantum matter’ with properties of technological importance. In high-temperature superconductors\, such as YBa2Cu3O7\, there appears to be a ‘quantum critical point’ whose entanglement structure is being explored by experiment and theory. Related entanglement structures arise across black hole horizons\, and recent advances have shed new light on Stephen Hawking’s information paradox. Sachdev will use simple models of entanglement to describe these mutually beneficial developments across different fields of physics. \n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\nSubir Sachdev studied at the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi\, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University. He is now the Herchel Smith Professor of Physics and department chair of physics at Harvard University.

SUMMARY:Secret Science Club Presents Structural Biologist Kevin Gardner
DESCRIPTION:The human body is made of trillions of cells. Inside each cell\, it’s as busy as the subway system with a dismaying array of routes\, signals\, and ever-moving parts. Exploring these teeny-tiny living labyrinths is the mission of modern-day micronauts like Kevin Gardner. \nA biochemist and biophysicist\, Kevin Gardner has been unlocking the secrets inside cells for over two decades. As he dives into this microscopic world\, he visualizes how all-important cellular proteins look in three dimensions and studies how they react to different stimuli—all with the goal of learning how the human body works and finding new cures for diseases. \nAt the next Secret Science Club\, Dr. Gardner asks: \n–How do cells—bacteria\, plant\, and human—sense what is going on in the world around them? \n–What role does light play in the world of cells? What are “optogenetic tools”? How do they turn genes on and off? \n–How can understanding a cell’s reaction to stimuli\, such as light and oxygen levels\, be used to discover new biotech tools and cancer treatments? \nBEFORE & AFTER \n–Imbibe our macroscopic cocktail of the night\, the Inner Space \n–Sway to bio-themed tunes and feel the grooves at the cellular level \n–Stick around for the scintillating Q&A \nKevin Gardner is the Einstein Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry at the City College of New York\, and he is the Director of the Structural Biology Initiative at CUNY’s Advanced Science Research Center.

SUMMARY:Jeanne Proust Discusses Time at the Strand Bookstore
DESCRIPTION:Jeanne Proust aptly discusses the concept of ‘Time’ through a philosophical lens. \nTime appears as one of these concepts impossible to define\, nor to perceive as such. Augustine writes\, “What then is time? If no one asks me\, I know; if I want to explain it to a questioner\, I do not know”. Indeed\, though impossible to deny its existence\, since it seems to be part of the necessary framework (with space) in which we can perceive at all\, time cannot be accurately described. None of our 5 senses perceives it: we don’t see\, hear\, touch time. Even if time is intimately experienced\, impossible to get out of\, and an essential dimension of our experience and existence\, it still is extremely difficult to think about it\, grasp it – and certainly\, to control it. \nHow do we experience time passing? What is the past\, the present and the future\, and how does our conception of them shape the way we behave and think? The irreversibility\, the ephemerality of time is at the core of our existence – as is our mortality\, our very finitude. \nTeacher: Jeanne Proust\nJeanne Proust’s research focuses on Théodule Ribot’s Diseases of the Will\, both in philosophical and psychological perspectives. While teaching at different universities here in New York\, Jeanne is advocating for a widening of philosophical education beyond the academic frontiers.

SUMMARY:Escher and the Droste Effect
DESCRIPTION:In 1956\, the Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher made an unusual lithograph. Titled “Prentententoonstelling” (or\, “Print Gallery”)\, the piece shows a young man standing in an exhibition gallery viewing a print of a Mediterranean seaport. Among the buildings depicted in the twisting print\, the man paradoxically sees the very same gallery in which he is standing. Curiously\, Escher left the middle of the lithograph blank\, filling it with only his monogram and signature. \nIn this lecture\, Hendrik W. Lenstra will discuss interactions between mathematics and M.C. Escher’s artwork. A mathematical analysis of the methods used by Escher leads to a series of hallucinating computer animations that show\, among others\, what’s in the blurry blank hole in the middle of the piece. \n4:15-5pm: TEA \n5pm-6:15pm: LECTURE \n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\nLenstra received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the Universiteit van Amsterdam in 1977. He was a full professor at the university from 1978 until 1986\, and then at the University of California\, Berkeley\, from 1987 until 2003\, and since 1998 at the Universiteit Leiden in the Netherlands. Lenstra is best known for introducing advanced techniques in the area of number-theoretic algorithms. These techniques have important applications in computer security. Lenstra has been a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Science since 1984 and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1996. In 1998\, he won the Spinoza Award\, the highest scientific honor in the Netherlands.

SUMMARY:Daniel Levitin: Successful Aging
DESCRIPTION:Author of the iconic bestsellers This Is Your Brain on Music and The Organized Mind\, Daniel Levitin turns his keen insights to what happens in our brains as we age\, why we should think about health span\, not life span\, and\, based on a rigorous analysis of neuroscientific evidence\, what you can do to make the most of your seventies\, eighties\, and nineties today no matter how old you are now.\n\nSuccessful Aging uses research from developmental neuroscience and the psychology of individual differences to show that sixty-plus years is a unique developmental stage that\, like infancy or adolescence\, has its own demands and distinct advantages. Levitin looks at the science behind what we all can learn from those who age joyously\, as well as how to adapt our culture to take full advantage of older people’s wisdom and experience. Throughout his exploration of what aging really means\, Levitin reveals resilience strategies and practical\, cognitive enhancing tricks everyone should do as they age. \nThe book is packed with accessible and discussable takeaways\, providing great material for reading groups and media coverage. \nSuccessful Aging inspires a powerful new approach to how readers think about our final decades\, and it will revolutionize the way we plan for old age as individuals\, family members\, and citizens within a society where the average life expectancy continues to rise. \nJoin us in the Rare Book room at The Strand for the release of Levitin’s new book. \nDoors open at 6:30pm. \nAdmission: $15 \nAdmission with signed copy of the book: $30

SUMMARY:Thomas More's Utopia
DESCRIPTION:Using Thomas More’s Utopia as our foundation\, we’ll examine our own state of mental and emotional health in present day society during this living room Olio event with professor Patricia Kim. \nWhy does the future look so bleak? And what does that have to do with the state of our individual and collective mental health? \nMuch of the dialogue in this Olio will be about our own state of mental and emotional affairs. History is a collection of traumatic events that have been scripted in human blood and mortality and we have all been dropped into its narrative miasma. This makes for a great deal of stress that we will collectively take on in an ad hoc group therapy modality. We will use Thomas More’s ‘Utopia’ to frame our undeniably parallel social issues and better understand not just the text\, but ourselves as individuals. We’ll begin by examining trauma and its aftermath (both historically and presently) and end with examining the following NYC Dept. of Health’s statistic: that 1 in 5 New Yorkers has a mental disorder. We will then look at how depression and anxiety (two of the most prevalent diagnoses) have affected our present\, and perhaps\, more importantly\, their effects on our collective future. \nQuestions to think about: \nWhat are More’s thoughts on social ills and their relationship to mental illness? What are yours?\nWould More be surprised at the state of our society today? Why or why not? \nWhat are the ways in which we can collectively work to become a healthier community/society? \nAbout the Teacher: \nPatricia Kim received her MFA from Columbia University and teaches Composition and Literature classes at Baruch College while completing a novel.
