SUMMARY:A Playlist for Our Future? Human Advantage in an Age of Technology
DESCRIPTION:This panel will address artificial intelligence and which lessons from the humanities and the social and behavioral sciences are needed.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe theme for Columbia University’s incoming class of 2023 is “Press Play\,” encouraging students to craft their own learning experiences and inspiring them to express their “whole\, authentic self.” Building on this appeal\, let’s start by imagining a “playlist for our future.” What kinds of tools and knowledge might be included in this holistic playlist? This panel will focus on questions of building human capabilities to address this new AI landscape and which lessons from the humanities and the social and behavioral sciences are needed in developing\, guiding\, and working alongside future technology. \nIn A Playlist for Our Future? Accelerating the Human Advantage in an Age of Technology and Complexity\, we’ll explore: \n\nGenerative learning as a model for human and machine collaboration\, and to increase the human advantage for lifelong learning and problem solving.\nKey lessons from history and the humanities on how humans have navigated technological change in the past\, and ways we can identify and address issues now and in the future.\nPractical applications\, frameworks\, and future research directions for industry and institutions\, as well as opportunities for collaboration.\n\n\n\nEvent Speakers:\n\nLydia Chilton\, Assistant Professor of Computer Science\, Columbia University\nMatthew Jones\, James R. Barker Professor of Contemporary Civilization\, Columbia University\nAlison Lord\, Global Head of Talent\, Google Creative Lab\nMickey McManus\, Autodesk Fellow\, researcher\, computer scientist\, serial entrepreneur\, and author of Trillions: Thriving in the Emerging Information Ecology \nModerated by Beth Comstock\, former vice chair and CMO\, General Electric\, and author of Imagine it Forward: Courage\, Creativity\, and the Power of Change

SUMMARY:Growing Up in Science: Jacqueline Gottlieb's Unofficial Story
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will begin at 4:00 pm at the Jerome L. Greene Science Center\, room L7-119. \nJacqueline Gottlieb\, PhD studies the mechanisms that underlie the brain’s higher cognitive functions\, including decision making\, memory\, and attention. Her interest is in how the brain gathers the evidence it needs — and ignores what it doesn’t — during everyday tasks and during special states such as curiosity. Her research could offer insight into disorders that involve deficits of attention\, such as attention deficit disorder\, depression and drug addiction. \nGrowing Up in Science is a seminar series initiated at NYU by Drs. Wei Ji Ma and Cristina Alberini in 2014. The speakers of this series do not talk about their science; they talk about the human side of becoming and being a scientist. They share their successes as well as the struggles\, weaknesses\, detours and failures.

SUMMARY:Beyond Oneself: The Ethics and Psychology of Awe
DESCRIPTION:At its core\, awe and wonder appear to be powerful emotions that can inform and shape our attitudes toward ourselves and others\, especially in relation to the larger meaning and purpose of our lives. What are the psychological underpinnings of these universal emotions? How does awe\, for example\, relate to self-knowledge\, and more generally to understanding the enigmatic contradictions of human nature? Is it possible to cultivate and develop this emotion as an ethical incentive in our relations with others? Are awe and wonder capable of awakening and engendering moral transformation? Does the emotion of awe lie at the root of the religious impulse in humans? And is there any room left for a sense of the miraculous in today’s increasingly scientific and secular world? \nProf. of religious studies and ethicist Lisa Sideris joins psychologists Jennifer Stellar and Piercarlo Valdesolo to explore our understanding of how awe shapes our perspectives and views on everything from science to morality.

SUMMARY:Personality Disorders in Everyday Life
DESCRIPTION:What is personality? What differentiates a person’s character from another person’s? What is it about you that makes you… you? In what ways do you get in the way of yourself? These types of questions are easily posed but remain some of the most difficult to answer in all of psychology. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis talk examines these questions and applies them to styles ranging from normal to abnormal variants. \n\n\n\n\n\nLawrence Ian Reed is a clinical assistant professor at NYU. He studies facial expression of emotion\, focusing on why we so visibly express our private motivational and emotional states. He is also a clinically trained psychologist with a specialization in treating adolescents and adults with mood and emotional disorders.

SUMMARY:The Power of Political Satire on TV
DESCRIPTION:As the New Yorker recently noted\, comedians and satirists do more “than simply comment upon politics; they help shape it.” Political satire on television truly exploded with the debut of The Daily Show twenty years ago and now permeates all media throughout the day from podcasts to The View to the late night shows. As we head into the presidential election\, the Paley Center is gathering satirists from different generations and persuasions to discuss the potency of humor to change politics and the type of leaders whom we elect. \nIN PERSON\nDavid Cross\, Actor\, Writer\, Comedian (Mr. Show\, Arrested Development)\nDave Smith\, Comedian and Political Commentator\nLizz Winstead\, Cocreator\, The Daily Show\nElayne Boosler\, Comedian and Writer\nModerator: Vinson Cunningham\, Staff Writer\, The New Yorker

SUMMARY:Neuroscience and the Study of Intergenerational Trauma: How Does the Remote Past Get Under Our Skin?
DESCRIPTION:How do we “remember” things that did not happen to us? Neuroscience has made remarkable discoveries about ways in which our brains and bodies can be affected by traumatic experiences of our parents. We know that children born to survivors of cataclysmic events are themselves more susceptible to stress\, and at greater risk of mental illnesses like PTSD\, despite never having experienced the trauma themselves. Epigenetics\, the in-utero environment\, early experiences\, and the parent-child relationship all play a role. These discoveries have spurred a compelling field of research into intergenerational trauma\, revealing a complexity of biological and psychological interactions determining risk or resilience – but what does this new knowledge mean for survivors and their children? Scholars in the humanities and arts have long explored the lived experiences of those who feel they have inherited trauma from past generations. What can neuroscientists learn from these explorations\, and what can other disciplines take from advances in neuroscience? We hear from pioneering researchers\, clinicians\, and scholars as they make sense of how the remote past gets under the skin to affect the present. \nSpeakers:\nFrances Champagne\, PhD\, Professor of Psychology\, University of Texas at Austin\nGabriele M. Schwab\, PhD\, Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature\, University of California\, Irvine\nRachel Yehuda\, PhD\, Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience\, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai \n  \nDiscussant:\nMarianne Hirsch\, PhD\, William Peterfield Trent Professor of English and Comparative Literature\, Columbia University \n\nModerator:\nClare McCormack\, PhD\, Presidential Scholar in Society and Neuroscience\, Columbia University \n  \nFree and open to the public\, but RSVP is required via Eventbrite. This event is part of the Seminars in Society and Neuroscience series.

SUMMARY:What’s a Brain For? A Moving Story
DESCRIPTION:Neuroscientist Daniel Wolpert\, PhD\, is fascinated by how the brain controls our every movement. The ease with which humans move our arms\, our eyes\, even our lips when we speak masks the true complexity of the control. While computers can now beat grandmasters at chess\, no computer can yet control a robot to manipulate a chess piece with the dexterity of a six-year-old child. Join Dr. Wolpert as he discusses what makes control so hard\, especially in the face of incomplete or rapidly changing information about the world. \nThis conversation will be moderated by Shreya Saxena\, PhD\, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Center for Theoretical Neuroscience at Columbia’s Zuckerman Institute.
