DESCRIPTION:A Benefit Evening to Save Revolution Books with artist Dread Scott\, in conversation with Andy Zee\, spokesperson for Revolution Books\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nOn November 8 and 9\, 2019\, hundreds of re-enactors retraced the path of the largest rebellion of enslaved people in United States history\, embodying a story of resistance\, freedom and revolutionary action. It was called The Negro Motorist Green Book\, and it helped African-Americans navigate safe passage across America well into the 1960s. Explore some of the segregated nation’s safe havens and notorious “sundown towns” and witness stories of struggle and indignity as well as opportunity and triumph. \nThe Academy Awarding winning film of the same name was criticized for not presenting the truth about what the Green Book. \n\nJoin us for a documentary screening and discussion every third Sunday of the month. DESCRIPTION:Untold Truths Behind Black Student Activism in the 1960s: Marilyn Allman Maye\, Harold S. Buchanan\, Jannette O. Domingo and Marilyn Holifield with Brent Staples \n\n\n\n\nHenry Louis Gates\, Jr. has called Seven Sisters and a Brother “compelling portraits of the lives of the young people who risked their futures to make a difference.” \nFour of the eight authors will sit down with Brent Staples of the New York Times to discuss their experiences as activists in an elite liberal arts college in the 1960s. When the eight students at Swarthmore College demanded a Black Studies curriculum and protested the decreased enrollment and hiring of African Americans in 1969\, the peaceful protest was misreported through a negative lens. This long overdue choral memoir chronicles their eight-day sit-in. It is a story of great relevance at a time in which first-generation college students and millennial activists have demonstrated a desire for increased political engagement. According to Congresswoman Donna Shalala\, “Theirs is a story of the power of collective action\, the value of shared identity\, and the thrill of progress.” \nA book signing follows the event.

DESCRIPTION:MoMA PS1 presents an afternoon of programming that examines the destruction of Iraqi heritage by the allied forces during the Gulf wars. Scholarship and mainstream attention surrounding the destruction and preservation of cultural heritage in Iraq have tended to focus largely on antiquity. This critical conversation expands this scope to not only address archeological sites and artifacts\, but to also focus on the living contemporary culture of Iraq\, posing questions about how culture is perceived\, instrumentalized\, and valued during times of war and occupation. \nMedical anthropologist Omar Dewachi\, whose research focuses on the intersection of global health\, the history of medicine\, and political anthropology\, leads the discussion. He is joined by Zahra Ali\, Zainab Bahrani\, David Harvey\, and Zainab Saleh. Following the presentations\, participants will come together in a conversation moderated by Ali. \nThe discussion is followed by a concert from renowned Iraqi maqam vocalist Hamid Al-Saadi performing with the celebrated ensemble Safaafir featuring Amir ElSaffar.

DESCRIPTION:Wherever possible\, guide Joe Svehlak will keep us off the streets as we learn about the continuing struggle to keep Downtown Manhattan connected to its multi-layered history during this time of much redevelopment. Above ground we’ll view sites connected with preservation gains and losses\, including the nation’s first memorial\, and New York’s first Roman Catholic parish. Underground\, walking various subway passages\, we’ll see major Arts for Transit projects that highlight the area’s diverse history\, such as Trade\, Treasure and Travel by Margie Hughto\, re-installed in the Cortlandt Street underpass. We’ll walk through the new Path Transit Hub and the Dey Street passage on our way to the Fulton Transit Center complex with its ornate landmarked Corbin Building\, original subway tiles\, and the re-installed Marine Grill murals by Frederick Dana Marsh depicting the history of shipping in New York harbor.\nBring a metro card with at least one fare since we will end in this interconnecting maze of four different subway stations.

DESCRIPTION:At the Museum of Jewish Heritage’s monthly Stories Survive Speaker Series\, hear Holocaust survivors share their life stories in their own words. \nMaritza Shelley was born in 1928 in Budapest\, Hungary. After the Nazi invasion of Hungary in 1944\, she and her sister were selected to perform forced labor. When Maritza returned on a brief visit to her mother\, who was living in the Jewish ghetto in Budapest\, a roundup occurred and they were sent on a death march. They eventually reunited with Maritza’s sister\, and all three women escaped\, obtained false papers\, and hitchhiked back to Budapest with a convoy of Nazis. Maritza moved to New York City in 1947.

Mikhal Dekel\, whose father was a child refugee in Tehran\, will recount the research and writing process of this epic yet relatively unknown Holocaust story\, told in her new book Tehran Children: A Holocaust Refugee Odyssey. She will discuss the circumstances that brought her father and hundreds of thousands of others from Poland to the Soviet interior\, Central Asia\, Iran\, India and Palestine and talk about the refugees’ experiences in each locale and the mutual impact of refugees and host countries on each other.

The hidden source of Thomas’s conservative views\, Robin shows\, is a profound skepticism that racism can be overcome. Thomas is convinced that any government action on behalf of African-Americans will be tainted by racism; the most African-Americans can hope for is that white people will get out of their way. \nCorey Robin is the author of The Reactionary Mind: Conservatism from Edmund Burke to Donald Trump and Fear: The History of a Political Idea. He teaches political science at Brooklyn College and The Graduate Center\, CUNY. Robin’s writing has appeared in the New York Times\, the New Yorker\, Harper’s\, and the London Review of Books\, among other publications\, and has been translated into thirteen languages. He lives in Brooklyn\, New York. \nKendall Thomas is the Nash Professor of Law and co-founder and director of the Center for the Study of Law and Culture at Columbia Law School. His teaching and research interests include U.S. and comparative constitutional law\, human rights\, legal philosophy\, feminist legal theory\, critical race theory\, and law and sexuality. SUMMARY:A Talk with Seymour Kaplan: Dachau Liberator
DESCRIPTION:At 17-years old\, Seymour Kaplan enlisted in the American Army and left Brooklyn to fight against Nazi Germany. He became a machine gunner with the 692nd Tank Destroyer Battalion attached to the 42nd Infantry Division. He was one of the first American soldiers to enter the Dachau concentration camp in April 1945. As a Yiddish speaker\, Mr. Kaplan served as a translator for the camp Survivors. The shock of what he witnessed traumatized him for the rest of his life. When he returned home to New York\, he established a garment manufacturing company\, eventually retired\, and then began a second career as a teacher. He is a mental health advocate and has been honored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
