SUMMARY:What Future for Our National Heritage? Panel Talk
DESCRIPTION:What do we do with buildings and objects of national and historical importance ? \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nThe controversial reconstruction of Notre Dame\, which suffered considerable damage last spring due to a fire\, has sparked another question around national heritage and its adaptation to the present and future. Technological advances sometimes render obsolete construction that have been built centuries ago. Should we favor a newly built version which is adapted to current times or preserve the original as a way to remember the past? The debate will in part cover current discussions about Notre-Dame. \nGuest Speakers: \nBénédicte de Montlaur\, CEO\, World Monuments Fund \nPierre-Antoine Gatier\, Chief Architect for Historical Monuments \nJorge Otero-Pailos\, Director and Professor of Historic Preservation at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture in New York \nMichel Picaud\, President\, Friends of Notre-Dame de Paris \nModerated by Victoria Sanger\, specialist in urban history. \nPanel talk held in English.

SUMMARY:The Crossword Show with Zach Sherwin
DESCRIPTION:The Crossword Show is a live comedy performance hosted by Zach Sherwin (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend\,” “Epic Rap Battles of History”)\, in which a panel of guest entertainers solves an actual crossword puzzle onstage in front of an audience\, with everything displayed on a big screen so the crowd can follow along. \n  \nEvery time the solvers decipher a clue\, Zach launches the show down a rabbit hole that’s somehow related to the answer word. There’s a multimedia slide presentation\, tons of comedy\, wordplay\, and pop-culture trivia\, and even a musical element: while the clues work like those in a normal crossword puzzle\, they also happen to be rhyming hip-hop lyrics. You’ll laugh. You’ll be dazzled by the connections between the words and themes of the puzzle. You’ll even leave feeling like you learned something. And you ABSOLUTELY do not need to be a crossword enthusiast to be enthralled by this unique\, joyful experience! \n  \nSOLVERS:\nAparna Nancherla (Bojack Horseman\, Comedy Central)\nJoe Firestone (Shrill\, The Tonight Show)\nMike Brown (Adult Swim\, NBC)

SUMMARY:HBO’s The Plot Against America: A Screening and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:A sneak preview of David Simon’s chilling adaptation of the Philip Roth masterpiece that follows the plight of a working-class Jewish family after Charles Lindbergh wins the Presidency and turns the country toward isolationism\, xenophobia\, and fascism. \nSimon and cast members will sit for a conversation after a screening of the first hour of the six-part miniseries\, which premieres on March 16. The conversation will be moderated by NPR’s Peter Sagal. \nSet in 1940s New Jersey\, The Plot Against America imagines an alternate American history in which the aviation hero beats F.D.R.\, reaches a neutrality agreement with Hitler\, and leads a government program of gradually escalating anti-Semitism. At the heart of the story are Bess and Herman Levin\, two young parents grappling with what Roth called “the terror of the unforeseen” and striving to protect their sons from an increasingly hostile environment that threatens to rupture their family\, their community and their country.

SUMMARY:New York Stories: Danny Meyer
DESCRIPTION:Celebrated restaurateur Danny Meyer\, whose past and present portfolio includes classic New York City eateries such as Union Square Café\, Eleven Madison Park\, and Gramercy Tavern as well as the Shake Shack empire\, shares his own 9/11 experience as a midtown resident and business owner. As chair of the Restaurant Committee for NYC & Company in 2001\, Meyer spearheaded an industry-wide initiative to breathe life back into New York City’s restaurant culture; a dual mission to serve a devastated city and keep the industry afloat. Meyer reflects upon the impact of the attacks on New York City and the restorative role of restaurants as sites of community and connection.

SUMMARY:Dan Abrams with Megyn Kelly: Defending the Enemy
DESCRIPTION:The shots that rang out on a frigid Boston evening in March 1770 almost launched a revolution after British soldiers killed five colonists in cold blood. What exactly led to the incident has never been fully understood\, yet to the city’s angry residents\, there was only one possible outcome. \nA young attorney named John Adams\, however\, refused to allow his revolutionary zeal to overshadow the rule of law. Determined that the soldiers’ trial be fair\, the man who would become America’s second president defended them\, establishing principles that would soon become enshrined in our law. \nIn the riveting prose of Dan Abrams and David Fisher\, that trial becomes more than a historical footnote. As in their previous bestselling presidential legal historical tomes\, Abrams and Fisher use an original transcript from the trial to transport readers back in time\, capturing the integrity of a man who would help shape a nation. \nModerated by Megyn Kelly\, attorney and former anchor on Fox News and NBC. \n$30 includes a copy of the book

SUMMARY:Taking on White Nationalist Violence
DESCRIPTION:Waves of white nationalist violence have spread across the nation\, from Charlottesville to Pittsburgh\, El Paso and beyond. Now\, a landmark lawsuit against the organizers of the 2017 Charlottesville march is taking on the leadership of this movement — asserting that they intentionally coordinated the violence that erupted\, thus breaking the law. \nLed by Roberta Kaplan (lead counsel on the Supreme Court case that led to the legalization of same-sex marriage) and Karen Dunn (a former federal prosecutor in Virginia)\, the legal action — filed against a broad range of neo-Nazis\, white supremacists and affiliated hate groups — exposes the individuals and organizations driving the wave of white supremacist hate and dismantles the infrastructure at the center of their movement. The suit is supported by the civil rights nonprofit Integrity First for America. \nJoin us for a discussion of the lawsuit and its potential to turn back the tide of hate with: \nRoberta Kaplan\, Co-Lead Counsel \nKaren Dunn\, Co-Lead Counsel  \nAmy Spitalnick\, Executive Director\, Integrity First for America  \nElizabeth Sines\, Plaintiff

SUMMARY:What Nostalgia Was: The History of a Deadly Emotion
DESCRIPTION:People once died of nostalgia. While we all recognize nostalgia when we see it\, and know that it “ain’t what it used to be\,” few of us are familiar with what it once was. This talk uncovers the forgotten medical history of nostalgia from the term’s invention in Switzerland in 1688 to the disease’s demise in colonial north Africa in the late nineteenth century. By tracing the scientific and social conditions of possibility of this deadly form of nostalgia\, Thomas Dodman seeks to grasp it as a specifically modern psychological condition and thus show the historicity of our emotions. \nEvent Speaker\nThomas Dodman is the Director of Undergraduate Studies and Assistant Professor of French at Columbia University. He is a historian of modern France and its empire. Thomas Dodman’s research grapples with forms and experiences of social change in the modern era.
