DESCRIPTION:Waves of white nationalist violence have spread across the nation\, from Charlottesville to Pittsburgh\, El Paso and beyond. Now\, a landmark lawsuit against the organizers of the 2017 Charlottesville march is taking on the leadership of this movement — asserting that they intentionally coordinated the violence that erupted\, thus breaking the law. \nLed by Roberta Kaplan (lead counsel on the Supreme Court case that led to the legalization of same-sex marriage) and Karen Dunn (a former federal prosecutor in Virginia)\, the legal action — filed against a broad range of neo-Nazis\, white supremacists and affiliated hate groups — exposes the individuals and organizations driving the wave of white supremacist hate and dismantles the infrastructure at the center of their movement. SUMMARY:What Nostalgia Was: The History of a Deadly Emotion
DESCRIPTION:People once died of nostalgia. While we all recognize nostalgia when we see it\, and know that it “ain’t what it used to be\,” few of us are familiar with what it once was. This talk uncovers the forgotten medical history of nostalgia from the term’s invention in Switzerland in 1688 to the disease’s demise in colonial north Africa in the late nineteenth century. By tracing the scientific and social conditions of possibility of this deadly form of nostalgia\, Thomas Dodman seeks to grasp it as a specifically modern psychological condition and thus show the historicity of our emotions. \nEvent Speaker\nThomas Dodman is the Director of Undergraduate Studies and Assistant Professor of French at Columbia University. He is a historian of modern France and its empire. Thomas Dodman’s research grapples with forms and experiences of social change in the modern era.

SUMMARY:Illuminating Forgotten Histories: New York City's Early Black Communities
DESCRIPTION:The Lapidus Center for the Historical Analysis of Transatlantic Slavery and the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation are partnering to illuminate aspects of New York City’s early Black neighborhoods. From Seneca Village\, a community that will be formally memorialized in Central Park soon to Greenwich Village’s “Little Africa”\, our group of experts will address the work of discovery\, preservation\, and documentation of these and other historically significant\, but widely-forgotten Black communities. Panelists will include: \nLeslie M. Harris\, professor of history at Northwestern University and author or co-editor of numerous books\, including In the Shadow of Slavery: African Americans in New York City\, 1626-1863 and Slavery in New York (co-edited with Ira Berlin) \nJamila Brathwaite\, a trustee of the African American Historical Society of Rockland County. She is an educator and curator and has worked to uncover the hidden history of the people of the African Diaspora\, including “Little Africa\,” a Black community\, which flourished during the 19th century in New York City’s Greenwich Village. \nJohn Reddick\, an architectural historian and Columbia University Community Scholar who is actively engaged in Harlem’s culture\, art and preservation. He’s lectured and published broadly\, and recently served as a curator and discussion leader for the Harlem Focus series at the Smithsonian Institution’s Cooper-Hewitt Design Center.

The unearthing of these ancient Jewish manuscripts\, now known as the Dead Sea Scrolls\, set forth a modern day adventure into the past. In the years since they have sparked enormous interest in researchers and the public alike. \nJoin Dr. Roitman as he leads you on the journey of the Dead Sea Scrolls\, from their discovery and excavations in Khirbet Qumran to their contributions to civilization. Drawing on his experience as curator of the Dead Sea Scrolls at Israel Museum–home to the eight most complete and well preserved manuscripts in the world–Dr. Roitman will clarify some key issues surrounding their discovery\, and present the current state of research on the scrolls themselves. \n\nDr. Adolfo D. Roitman has served as the head of the Shrine of the Book and the Lizbeth and George Krupp Curator of the Dead Sea Scrolls at the Israel Museum for more than 25 years.

SUMMARY:Mohamed Kouaci: A Photographic Memory of Early Algeria
DESCRIPTION:Mohamed Kouaci is thought to be the only Algerian photographer to have documented the entire Algerian struggle and the early years of Independence. A self-taught photographer\, he was head of the photography service at the Information Ministry of the G.P.R.A. (Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic) from 1958 to 1962. \nIn this talk\, Adel Ben Bella\, shares rare photographs from the Kouaci archive that includes portraits of historical figures and revolutionaries such as Frantz Fanon\, Che Guevara and Fidel Castro along with images of the role of female soldiers\, life in the refugee camps\, the A.L.N (Algerian Liberation Army) military bases\, and the first few days of Algeria’s independence in July 1962. \nAdel Ben Bella\, independent scholar and filmmaker \nRegistration for this event includes the 3pm screening of La Zerda ou les chants de l’oubli (Zerda or the Songs of Forgetting)

SUMMARY:Lequeu\, Exceptional Draftsman?
DESCRIPTION:If it were not for his drawings at the Bibliothèque nationale de France\, Jean-Jacques Lequeu would be a simple footnote in the history of late eighteenth-century French architecture.  Lequeu’s drawings reflect the way architects of his generation tended to rely more heavily on graphic communication than on textual or theoretical means of expressing their ideas.  Lequeu established a specific and original dialogue between text and image that allowed him to question and distort the graphic language set by his colleagues. Join Basile C. Baudez\, Assistant Professor at Princeton University\, for a presentation contextualizing Lequeu’s production in the history of architectural draftsmanship and to uncover the reasons why he remains one of the most fascinating artists of his time. \nThe exhibition Jean-Jacques Lequeu: Visionary Architect. Drawings from the Bibliothèque nationale de France will be open at 5:30 PM for program attendees.

DESCRIPTION:One of the most notorious war criminals of all time\, Dr. Josef Mengele has come to symbolize both the evil of the Nazi regime and the failure of justice in the postwar world. \nDrawing on new scholarship and sources\, historian David G. Marwell examines Mengele’s life and career\, chronicling his university studies\, which led to two PhDs and a promising career as a scientist; his wartime service\, in combat and at Auschwitz\, where his “selections” determined the fate of countless innocents and his “scientific” pursuits resulted in the traumatization and death of thousands more; and his postwar refuge in Germany and South America. Mengele describes the international search in 1985\, which ended in a cemetery in São Paulo\, Brazil\, and the dogged forensic investigation that produced overwhelming evidence that Mengele had died—but failed to convince those who\, arguably\, most wanted him dead. This is a story of science without limits\, escape without freedom\, and resolution without justice. \nA book signing follows the event.
