SUMMARY:Drug Test: Psychedelics and God
DESCRIPTION:Do psychedelics bring us closer to god? Or do they prove religion is a neurological illusion? What kind of bush was Moses burning? What was in that apple on the tree of knowledge in the garden of Eden? If you come to my show\, I promise all of these questions will be answered definitively. And there will be no need for any further dispute. \nSince the dawn of mankind\, humans have tried to get high in one way or another. Why? Altered states of consciousness can be profoundly dangerous or dangerously profound. Knowledge makes the difference. We welcome a panel of experts and comedians to discuss how these drugs work! \nAbout your host: Sarah Rose Siskind is a comedy writer for StarTalk with Neil deGrasse Tyson on National Geographic.

SUMMARY:How Running Changes the Brain: NYC Runners and Dr. Karen Postal
DESCRIPTION:“Run for your life!” takes on a new meaning when aerobic exercise is proven to generate new brain cells. This finding is a game-changer\, since neuroscientists used to believe that the number of brain cells we are born with never increases. Now there is evidence that vigorous exercise—the kind that makes you really sweat—helps give birth to new brain cells\, particularly in the area of the brain that encodes new memories. \nJessie Zapo\, coach of Girls Run NYC and Adidas ambassador\, is joined by Adam Francique\, captain at Adidas Runners NYC\, and neuropsychologist Dr. Karen Postal to elucidate the importance running has on not only the body but also the mind. This program begins with a screening of the short film Go Together\, directed by Joshua Seftel.

SUMMARY:Joseph LeDoux: Danger is Ancient—Fear Is A Recent Invention
DESCRIPTION:As soon as there was life\, there was danger. Fear\, on the other hand\, is a recent invention. \nSo says the Henry and Lucy Moses Professor of Science\, neuroscience\, psychology\, and psychiatry at NYU\, Joseph LeDoux. Dr. LeDoux studies the question that has long puzzled neuroscientists—what is consciousness? He believes that by understanding the mechanisms of emotions like fear\, we can come to finally understand consciousness. \nIn a mind-opening conversation with prize-winning science writer\, Claudia Dreifus\, Dr. LeDoux\, the author of Anxious and The Emotional Brain\, speaks on his newest book\, The Deep History of Ourselves: The Four Billion Year Story of How We Got Our Conscious Brains. \nA book signing follows the event.

SUMMARY:Designing Babies: How Technology Is Changing the Ways We Create Children
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \nSince the first “test tube baby” was born over 40 years ago\, In Vitro Fertilization and other Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ARTs) have advanced in extraordinary ways\, producing millions of babies. The possibilities of this rapidly developing technology are astounding–especially in the United States. As these possibilities are increasingly realized\, physicians in many specialties\, from OB/GYN and pediatrics to genetics\, internal medicine and psychiatry\, along with potential parents and policymakers\, face complex and critical questions about the use–or possible misuse–of ARTs. Designing Babies: How Technology is Changing the Ways We Create Children confronts these questions\, examining the medical\, ethical\, social\, and policy concerns surrounding reproductive technologies. Based on in-depth interviews with providers and patients\, Robert Klitzman explores how physicians and patients are facing quandaries of whether\, when\, and how to use ARTs. He articulates the full range of these crucial issues\, from the economic pressures patients face to the moral and social challenges encountered in making decisions \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nRobert Klitzman\, MD\, is a professor of psychiatry at the College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Joseph Mailman School of Public Health\, and the director of the online and in-person Bioethics Masters and Certificate Programs at Columbia University.

SUMMARY:The Mathematics of Intelligence\, Natural and Artificial\, with Dr. Joshua B. Tenenbaum
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence has brought us many useful technologies\, but true machine intelligence remains elusive.  Nothing besides the human mind has the flexible\, general-purpose common sense that we use from very early in development.  How can we capture human intelligence in engineering terms\, and what are the prospects for someday building machines that are as smart as we are?  Join Dr. Joshua B. Tenenbaum\, Professor of Computational Cognitive Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and 2019 MacArthur Fellow\, to explore the mathematics of minds\, both natural and artificial.  Dr. Tenenbaum will discuss recent results and insights that come from building models of core human common sense; introduce state-of-the-art mathematical concepts from probability\, programming\, and simulation; and share practical examples of how these tools let us predict and explain our own minds’ workings and ultimately let us build AI systems that come ever closer to human-like intelligence.

SUMMARY:How Biased Are We? A Conversation About Perception\, Cognition\, and Accuracy
DESCRIPTION:Deutsches Haus at NYU\, University Alliance Ruhr\, and the German Research Foundation (DFG) present a conversation among Emily Balcetis (NYU)\, Lee Jussim (Rutgers University)\, and Albert Newen (Ruhr-University Bochum) as moderator\, exploring the concept of human perception and its inherent biases that affect our understanding of the world. \nAbout the event:\nPerceptions are the window to our world. Rather than merely producing a snapshot\, our brains actively create our experiences when we perceive objects or persons. Given that background knowledge and biases shape the ways in which we understand the world\, can we ever trust our perceptual experiences? To what extent can we rely on science to correct our view of the world since sciences are also influenced by the biases of individual researchers? A panel of psychologists and philosophers will present recent research in a conversation about our capacity to adequately understand the world around us.

SUMMARY:Dr. Azra Raza: The Human Costs of Pursuing Cancer to the Last
DESCRIPTION:Are we fighting cancer wrong? \nAzra Raza is the Chan Soon-Shiong professor of medicine and the director of the MDS Center at Columbia University. A world-class oncologist\, she has cared for thousands of cancer patients. Yet in her highly acclaimed new book\, The First Cell\, she asks why so little progress has been made in diagnosing and treating cancer over the past few decades. Despite all the hype to the contrary\, she says\, we have lost the war on cancer. We spend $150 billion each year treating it—yet succeed in most cases in adding mere months to a patient’s life at agonizing physical and financial cost. \nSo what are the alternatives? Join her for a profoundly illuminating\, realistic\, and positive conversation about her book and about how we should move forward in treating cancer with science\, wisdom\, and grace.

SUMMARY:Can Time Heal Anything? Lee Mingwei and Dr. Lila Davachi
DESCRIPTION:What lingers in your heart after a loved one is lost? And what can this teach us about the ephemerality of life? \nIn his work The Letter Writing Project\, part of the Rubin’s exhibition Measure Your Existence\, artist Lee Mingwei invites visitors to pen a letter to a lost or absent loved one. The cathartic act of writing the unsaid is twofold\, as other museum visitors can choose to read the unsealed letters left at the installation. To further explore the mechanics of grief\, Lee takes the Brainwave stage with Dr. Lila Davachi to discuss the physical and mental experience of our own impermanence. \n

SUMMARY:The Science of Love
DESCRIPTION:Simons Foundation Presents Free Event: The Science of Love\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nNothing is more treasured — and mysterious — than the bond between mother and child. After a mother gives birth\, her brain and body change in ways that enable her to care for the new life. Bianca Jones Marlin examines the brain dynamics behind these changes\, some of which are ‘remembered’ in the genes and passed down for generations. In her talk\, she will challenge the age-old concept of ‘nature vs. nurture’ and show how a bridge between learned and innate animal behaviors is built. Audience members will also have an opportunity to participate using their senses to explore the real-time effects of neurochemicals in social learning. \nMarlin is a neuroscientist and postdoctoral researcher at Columbia University in the laboratory of Nobel Laureate Richard Axel\, where she investigates how traumatic experiences in parents affect the brain structure of their offspring. She holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience from New York University and dual bachelor’s degrees in biology and adolescent education from St. John’s University. As a graduate student\, her research focused on the vital bond between parent and child\, and she studied the use of neurochemicals\, such as the “love drug” oxytocin\, as a treatment to strengthen fragile and broken parent-child relationships. \nMarlin aims to utilize neurobiology and the science of learning to better inform both the scientific and educational community on how positive experiences dictate brain health\, academic performance and social well-being. Her research has been featured in the Los Angeles Times\, The Guardian and Scientific American and as one of Discover magazine’s “100 Top Stories of 2015.” \nSCHEDULE \n6:00 – 6:30 pm Doors open \n6:30 – 7:30 pm Talk + Q&A \n7:30 – 8:30 pm Refreshments

SUMMARY:The First AI Simulation of the Universe is Fast and Accurate — and We Don’t Know Why
DESCRIPTION:A full understanding of the evolution of the universe’s structure is one of the holy grails of modern astrophysics. Astrophysicists survey large volumes of the universe and compare the findings to computer simulations. Simulating the movement of billions of particles over billions of years is a daunting task\, however\, even when using the simplest physical models. \nIn this lecture\, Shirley Ho will discuss her team’s work building a deep neural network that learns from a set of pre-run numerical simulations and predicts the large scale structure of the universe. Extensive analysis demonstrates that their deep-learning technique outperforms the commonly used fast approximate simulation method in predicting cosmic structure in the non-linear regime. They also show that their method can accurately extrapolate far beyond its training data and predict structure formation for significantly different cosmological parameters. This ability to extrapolate outside its training set is highly unexpected and remains a mystery. \n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\nHo’s research interests have ranged from fundamental cosmological measurements to exoplanet statistics to using machine learning to estimate how much dark matter is in the universe. Ho has broad expertise in theory\, observation and data science. Her recent interest has been on understanding and developing novel tools in statistics and machine learning techniques and applying them to astrophysical challenges. Her goal is to understand the universe’s beginning\, evolution and ultimate fate.

SUMMARY:CRISPR Film Screening: Human Nature
DESCRIPTION:From executive producer Dan Rather and director Adam Bolt\, the co-writer and editor of the Oscar-winning film Inside Job\, comes the story of the biggest tech revolution of the 21st Century. And it isn’t digital\, it’s biological. \nA breakthrough called CRISPR has given us unprecedented control over the basic building blocks of life. It opens the door to curing diseases\, reshaping the biosphere\, and designing our own children. Human Nature is a provocative exploration of CRISPR’s far-reaching implications\, through the eyes of the scientists who discovered it\, the families it is affecting\, and the bio-engineers who are testing its limits. How will this new power change our relationship with nature? What will it mean for human evolution? To begin to answer these questions we must look back billions of years and peer into an uncertain future. \nJoin us at the New York Academy of Sciences for a screening of the film Human Nature to explore these questions and more. For more in-depth coverage of the latest in CRISPR technology join us for the scientific symposium CRISPR: New Frontiers.

SUMMARY:From Einstein’s Doubts to Quantum Technologies: A New Quantum Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The debate between Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr over the interpretation of quantum mechanics was settled by the experimental tests of Bell’s inequalities. Those experiments drew attention to the revolutionary character of quantum entanglement\, which is now a key ingredient of quantum computing and quantum information. \nIn this lecture\, Alain Aspect will first explain Einstein’s reasoning about entangled particles. That reasoning led to his conclusion that quantum mechanics is not complete\, in contradiction with Bohr’s point of view. Aspect will then show how Bell’s inequalities have allowed experimentalists to settle the debate\, emphasizing the most extraordinary features of entanglement and prompting the emergence of basic ideas for quantum information and quantum communication. These ideas are enabling the development of new technologies in many academic and industrial laboratories. \n

SUMMARY:Secret Science Club Presents Astrophysicist Chiara Mingarelli
DESCRIPTION:Gravitational waves in space-time are like ripples in a pond cause by a pebble thrown in the water—that is\, if the pebble’s impact had the energy of\, say\, our own Sun exploding. Predicted by Einstein in 1916\, gravitational waves proved devilishly difficult to detect. It was only in 2015 that scientists were first able to pinpoint the existence of a real-life gravitational wave\, echoing across space-time as the result of a collision of two black holes more than a billion miles away. \nThat discovery ushered in a new “wave” in astronomy: Gravitational waves aren’t just fascinating phenomena—they are a whole new way to study the cosmos. Astrophysicist Chiara Mingarelli is part of a consortium of international scientists\, working on new methods to predict and detect gravitational waves in an effort to understand the large portion of the Universe that remains invisible to us. \nAt the next Secret Science Club\, Dr. Mingarelli asks: \n–Are there different kinds gravitational waves? Why are some harder to detect than others? \n–What might gravitational waves teach us about dark matter\, dark energy\, black holes\, and the Big Bang? \n–What role do pulsars (those super-freaky but super-reliable\, rotating\, radio-wave emitting neutron stars) play in gravitational wave research?
