SUMMARY:The Enigma of Life: Confronting Marvels at the Edges of Science
DESCRIPTION:Einstein famously claimed that “the most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible.” This statement suggests that no amount of scientific explanation will suffice to make sense of the bizarre situation of the human mind within the universe. So what is the actual role of awe and wonder within the framework of contemporary science? How\, for instance\, do awe and wonder inform scientists’ understanding of the phenomena they are researching? What aspects of contemporary science are more likely to elicit wonder\, and why? Is science rechanneling our innate thirst for knowledge and understanding toward more concrete and palpable realities\, or is it aggravating the tension between truth and meaning by revealing the scope of our ignorance when it comes to probing the ultimate nature of reality? \nPhysicist Marcelo Gleiser\, experimental psychologist Tania Lombrozo\, and physician Gavin Francis analyze the impact of awe and wonder on their own work and on the mindsets of their colleagues carrying out cutting-edge scientific research.   \n*Reception to follow \nLivestream\nThis event also will be available via a free Livestream.

SUMMARY:The Science of Sleep and Dreams
DESCRIPTION:We spend about a third of our lives in altered states of consciousness\, commonly known as sleep. Despite spending so much of our time devoted to this activity (more than any other\, over a lifetime)\, we are just beginning to understand why we sleep and what is going on in the brain while we do so. In this talk\, we will review what sleep is\, why it is essential for memory\, decision making\, creativity\, and emotional health as well as how to improve sleep and thus live your best life in 2020. Also\, we will discuss the phenomenon of dreams\, what influences them and their role in psychological health from a scientific perspective.\n\n\n\n\n\nPascal Wallisch serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at NYU. His research interests are at the intersection of Psychology and Neuroscience\, specifically Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience.

SUMMARY:The Big Thaw: Ancient Carbon\, Modern Science\, and a Race to Save the World
DESCRIPTION:Permafrost—dark\, ice-flaked\, permanently frozen ground that lies under tundra and boreal forests across our northern regions—covers more than 12 percent of the earth’s land surface. It exists in places that seem otherworldly and unimaginably remote to most of us\, but the changes taking place in the permafrost layer may ultimately affect the lives of every person on Earth. \nThe permafrost layer contains a vast store of ancient carbon\, more than four times the quantity found in all of today’s forests. It is like a ticking “carbon bomb”\, releasing carbon dioxide and methane as the permafrost thaws. Braving hordes of mosquitoes\, quicksand\, and extreme temperatures\, researchers are racing against the clock to educate us about the changes we must make to preserve Earth’s carbon balance. \nArctic scientist Max Holmes and photographer Chris Linder will share stories about their work studying and photographing thawing permafrost in Siberia and the Arctic. Their new book The Big Thaw: Ancient Carbon\, Modern Science\, and a Race to Save the World will be available for purchase and signing after the presentation.

SUMMARY:Jason Haber – Futurecity: A Look at the Past\, Present\, and Future of NYC and Cities Around the World
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in history\, more people live in cities than in rural areas. By 2050\, another 2 billion people will occupancy our planet\, with two-thirds of them living in cities. While we have reached unprecedented population growth\, our planet is under siege and many of our cities\, including our own\, are ill-prepared for the coming storm. From climate change\, infrastructure\, housing\, health care and transportation\, cities will face historic challenges to meet the demands of the 21st century. How do cities meet these challenges and thrive in the face of them? In FutureCity\, Jason takes the audience through the history of cities\, and explores contemporary issues that are key to their survival and success. For New York\, this requires a further embrace of Jane Jacobs\, while moving on from the cen-centric policies of Robert Moses. \nJason Haber is a serial and social entrepreneur.

SUMMARY:It’s Time to Expand Nuclear Power with Bill Nye
DESCRIPTION:For decades\, the development of nuclear power has sparked staunch debate among scientists\, politicians\, and activists alike. For its proponents\, the promise of nuclear energy is clear: It’s the most effective means of reducing greenhouse gases and combating climate change while still meeting the world’s growing demand for energy. And to date\, nuclear energy produces approximately 10% of the world’s power and rakes in billions in revenue in the United States alone. But its critics argue that expanding nuclear energy is dangerous and ill-advised. They cite the high costs of building powerplants\, the potential consequences of a meltdown\, and the challenge of managing waste. Rather\, they argue\, we should look to wind and solar to meet our energy demands. Should nuclear energy fuel our future? \n\nKEYNOTE CONVERSATION\n\n\n\nBill Nye\nScientist and CEO of the Planetary Society\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTHE DEBATERS FOR THE MOTION\n\n\n\n\nKirsty Gogan\nCo-founder and Executive Director of Energy for Humanity\n\n\n\n\n\nDaniel Poneman\nPresident and CEO of Centrus Energy\n\n\n\n\n\nAGAINST THE MOTION\n\n\nGregory B. SUMMARY:Ultra-Spooky Action at a Distance: From Quantum Materials in the Lab to Black Holes
DESCRIPTION:The strangest feature of quantum theory was dubbed “spooky action at a distance” by Albert Einstein. Today\, scientists have convincing evidence that two quantum particles far apart can entangle with each other such that the observation of one can instantaneously determine the state of the other. \nIn this lecture\, Subir Sachdev will describe how this quantum feature is playing a central role in many modern developments in physics. Quantum entanglement can occur on a macroscopic scale with trillions of electrons\, leading to new forms of ‘ultra-quantum matter’ with properties of technological importance. In high-temperature superconductors\, such as YBa2Cu3O7\, there appears to be a ‘quantum critical point’ whose entanglement structure is being explored by experiment and theory. Related entanglement structures arise across black hole horizons\, and recent advances have shed new light on Stephen Hawking’s information paradox. Sachdev will use simple models of entanglement to describe these mutually beneficial developments across different fields of physics. \n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\nSubir Sachdev studied at the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi\, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University. He is now the Herchel Smith Professor of Physics and department chair of physics at Harvard University.

SUMMARY:Secret Science Club Presents Structural Biologist Kevin Gardner
DESCRIPTION:The human body is made of trillions of cells. Inside each cell\, it’s as busy as the subway system with a dismaying array of routes\, signals\, and ever-moving parts. Exploring these teeny-tiny living labyrinths is the mission of modern-day micronauts like Kevin Gardner. \nA biochemist and biophysicist\, Kevin Gardner has been unlocking the secrets inside cells for over two decades. As he dives into this microscopic world\, he visualizes how all-important cellular proteins look in three dimensions and studies how they react to different stimuli—all with the goal of learning how the human body works and finding new cures for diseases. \nAt the next Secret Science Club\, Dr. Gardner asks: \n–How do cells—bacteria\, plant\, and human—sense what is going on in the world around them? \n–What role does light play in the world of cells? What are “optogenetic tools”? How do they turn genes on and off? \n–How can understanding a cell’s reaction to stimuli\, such as light and oxygen levels\, be used to discover new biotech tools and cancer treatments? \nBEFORE & AFTER \n–Imbibe our macroscopic cocktail of the night\, the Inner Space \n–Sway to bio-themed tunes and feel the grooves at the cellular level \n–Stick around for the scintillating Q&A \nKevin Gardner is the Einstein Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry at the City College of New York\, and he is the Director of the Structural Biology Initiative at CUNY’s Advanced Science Research Center.

SUMMARY:Escher and the Droste Effect
DESCRIPTION:In 1956\, the Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher made an unusual lithograph. Titled “Prentententoonstelling” (or\, “Print Gallery”)\, the piece shows a young man standing in an exhibition gallery viewing a print of a Mediterranean seaport. Among the buildings depicted in the twisting print\, the man paradoxically sees the very same gallery in which he is standing. Curiously\, Escher left the middle of the lithograph blank\, filling it with only his monogram and signature. \nIn this lecture\, Hendrik W. Lenstra will discuss interactions between mathematics and M.C. Escher’s artwork. A mathematical analysis of the methods used by Escher leads to a series of hallucinating computer animations that show\, among others\, what’s in the blurry blank hole in the middle of the piece. \n4:15-5pm: TEA \n5pm-6:15pm: LECTURE \n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\nLenstra received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the Universiteit van Amsterdam in 1977. He was a full professor at the university from 1978 until 1986\, and then at the University of California\, Berkeley\, from 1987 until 2003\, and since 1998 at the Universiteit Leiden in the Netherlands. Lenstra is best known for introducing advanced techniques in the area of number-theoretic algorithms. These techniques have important applications in computer security. Lenstra has been a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Science since 1984 and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1996. In 1998\, he won the Spinoza Award\, the highest scientific honor in the Netherlands.

SUMMARY:Daniel Levitin: Successful Aging
DESCRIPTION:Author of the iconic bestsellers This Is Your Brain on Music and The Organized Mind\, Daniel Levitin turns his keen insights to what happens in our brains as we age\, why we should think about health span\, not life span\, and\, based on a rigorous analysis of neuroscientific evidence\, what you can do to make the most of your seventies\, eighties\, and nineties today no matter how old you are now.\n\nSuccessful Aging uses research from developmental neuroscience and the psychology of individual differences to show that sixty-plus years is a unique developmental stage that\, like infancy or adolescence\, has its own demands and distinct advantages. Levitin looks at the science behind what we all can learn from those who age joyously\, as well as how to adapt our culture to take full advantage of older people’s wisdom and experience. Throughout his exploration of what aging really means\, Levitin reveals resilience strategies and practical\, cognitive enhancing tricks everyone should do as they age. \nThe book is packed with accessible and discussable takeaways\, providing great material for reading groups and media coverage. \nSuccessful Aging inspires a powerful new approach to how readers think about our final decades\, and it will revolutionize the way we plan for old age as individuals\, family members\, and citizens within a society where the average life expectancy continues to rise. \nJoin us in the Rare Book room at The Strand for the release of Levitin’s new book. \nDoors open at 6:30pm. \nAdmission: $15 \nAdmission with signed copy of the book: $30

SUMMARY:Saad Amer: Climate Action: Why Collective Action is The Answer
DESCRIPTION:With wildfires in California\, devastating hurricanes across the Atlantic\, and record temperatures across the US\, climate change is more visible than ever. Despite the billions of dollars in damages and lives lost this last year\, the US is moving backward in climate policy. While individual actions can make a difference\, systematic change is essential in dealing with the Climate Crisis\, especially given its impact on marginalized communities\, human health\, inequality and the economy. This talk\, featuring Saad Amer\, will focus on the why voting is essential\, how we can organize our communities\, and how we can turn the momentum on climate into a movement to the polls come 2020. \nSaad Amer is an environmentalist\, activist and the Founder of Plus1Vote\, an organization dedicated to improving voter turnout and improving representation in our democracy.
