DESCRIPTION:The young brain learning to communicate with hearing and voice builds auditory and vocal motor circuits that are functionally coupled to perceive and produce particular sounds. Sarah Woolley has helped decode how the brain interprets vocalizations — and what happens during development when those sounds are disrupted. Her research could shed important light on developmental disorders associated with speech and communication. In this conversation\, Dr. Woolley will discuss progress using songbirds to understand how early social experience tunes the auditory system for vocal communication. \nEvent Speaker:\nSarah Woolley\, PhD is Professor and former Chair in the Department of Psychology at Columbia University. DESCRIPTION:We spend about a third of our lives in altered states of consciousness\, commonly known as sleep. Despite spending so much of our time devoted to this activity (more than any other\, over a lifetime)\, we are just beginning to understand why we sleep and what is going on in the brain while we do so. In this talk\, we will review what sleep is\, why it is essential for memory\, decision making\, creativity\, and emotional health as well as how to improve sleep and thus live your best life in 2020. Also\, we will discuss the phenomenon of dreams\, what influences them and their role in psychological health from a scientific perspective.\n\n\n\n\n\nPascal Wallisch serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at NYU. His research interests are at the intersection of Psychology and Neuroscience\, specifically Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience.

SUMMARY:Mohamed Kouaci: A Photographic Memory of Early Algeria
DESCRIPTION:Mohamed Kouaci is thought to be the only Algerian photographer to have documented the entire Algerian struggle and the early years of Independence. A self-taught photographer\, he was head of the photography service at the Information Ministry of the G.P.R.A. (Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic) from 1958 to 1962. \nIn this talk\, Adel Ben Bella\, shares rare photographs from the Kouaci archive that includes portraits of historical figures and revolutionaries such as Frantz Fanon\, Che Guevara and Fidel Castro along with images of the role of female soldiers\, life in the refugee camps\, the A.L.N (Algerian Liberation Army) military bases\, and the first few days of Algeria’s independence in July 1962. \nAdel Ben Bella\, independent scholar and filmmaker \nRegistration for this event includes the 3pm screening of La Zerda ou les chants de l’oubli (Zerda or the Songs of Forgetting)

SUMMARY:Lequeu\, Exceptional Draftsman?
DESCRIPTION:If it were not for his drawings at the Bibliothèque nationale de France\, Jean-Jacques Lequeu would be a simple footnote in the history of late eighteenth-century French architecture.  Lequeu’s drawings reflect the way architects of his generation tended to rely more heavily on graphic communication than on textual or theoretical means of expressing their ideas.  Lequeu established a specific and original dialogue between text and image that allowed him to question and distort the graphic language set by his colleagues. Join Basile C. Baudez\, Assistant Professor at Princeton University\, for a presentation contextualizing Lequeu’s production in the history of architectural draftsmanship and to uncover the reasons why he remains one of the most fascinating artists of his time. \nThe exhibition Jean-Jacques Lequeu: Visionary Architect. Drawings from the Bibliothèque nationale de France will be open at 5:30 PM for program attendees.

DESCRIPTION:Curator for “I open my eyes and see myself under a tree laden with fruit that I cannot name.” \, Lila Nazemian will be in conversation with poet Sinan Antoon and artist Hadieh Shafie to discuss the themes in the exhibition\, relative to narrative-making practices of language\, translation\, and the mechanics of the written word. \n“I open my eyes and see myself under a tree laden with fruit that I cannot name.” is an exhibition entitled after a line in The Book of Collateral Damage\, written by Sinan Antoon\, featured alongside the work of Hadieh Shafie and Zarina Hashmi\, all deeply embedded within narrative mediums. Through the use of paper\, printing methods and orality\, each artist produces works that function as allegories for sharing stories of home and of their lived experiences.

Play our trivia game and win special flu-related prizes! \nDoors open 7pm\, Event begins 7:30pm \nSpeakers:\nDr. Nacho Mena\n“Finding the swine cousin of the virus that started the 2009 influenza pandemic” \nDr. Nacho Mena obtained his PhD. in Molecular Biology in 1996 at Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (Spain) with studies about the influenza virus. After that he has worked at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla (California)\, at the Institut Pasteur in Paris (France) and at the Center for Research in Animal Health (CISA-INIA) in Madrid (Spain). In 2011 he moved to New York and joined the prestigious group of Dr. Adolfo Garcia-Sastre where he holds the position of Research Assistant Professor. \nThrough his 25+ years of research experience Dr. Mena has studied several viral pathogens of great importance for human and animal health\, such as Influenza Virus\, Coxsackievirus\, Noroviruses\, Classical Swine Fever Virus and Newcastle Disease Virus\, among others. His current work at Mount Sinai includes the study of influenza virus diversity in animals and humans\, and the genetic manipulation of influenza and Newcastle Disease Viruses for vaccine development\, basic virology research and oncolytic therapy. \nDr. Florian Krammer\n”Influenza viruses and vaccines” \nFlorian Krammer\, PhD\, graduated from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences\, Vienna\, Austria. He received his postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Peter Palese at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai\, New York working on hemagglutinin stalk-based immunity and universal influenza virus vaccines. In 2013 he became an independent principal investigator and is currently Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Krammer’s work focuses on understanding the mechanisms of interactions between antibodies and viral surface glycoproteins and on translating this work into novel\, broadly protective vaccines and therapeutics. The main target is influenza virus but he is also working on Zika virus\, hantaviruses\, filoviruses and arenaviruses.
