SUMMARY:The Enigma of Life: Confronting Marvels at the Edges of Science
DESCRIPTION:Einstein famously claimed that “the most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible.” This statement suggests that no amount of scientific explanation will suffice to make sense of the bizarre situation of the human mind within the universe. So what is the actual role of awe and wonder within the framework of contemporary science? How\, for instance\, do awe and wonder inform scientists’ understanding of the phenomena they are researching? What aspects of contemporary science are more likely to elicit wonder\, and why? Is science rechanneling our innate thirst for knowledge and understanding toward more concrete and palpable realities\, or is it aggravating the tension between truth and meaning by revealing the scope of our ignorance when it comes to probing the ultimate nature of reality? \nPhysicist Marcelo Gleiser\, experimental psychologist Tania Lombrozo\, and physician Gavin Francis analyze the impact of awe and wonder on their own work and on the mindsets of their colleagues carrying out cutting-edge scientific research.   \n*Reception to follow \nLivestream\nThis event also will be available via a free Livestream.

SUMMARY:Stoa Nova: Prosochē or Not Prosochē? On Stoic Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:Do the Stoics engage in mindfulness? Is it similar to the practice from the Buddhist tradition? Is it useful? What is “mindfulness” anyway? \nJoin us and find out why the answers to these questions may make a difference in how you practice Stoicism. Or live your life. \nSuggested reading: https://www.patreon.com/posts/prosoche-or-not-30083645 \nFREE for members. $5 for non-members. \n\nHosted by philosopher Massimo Pigliucci\, Stoa Nova is inspired (with a bit of immodesty) to the ancient Greco-Roman schools of philosophy. Plato\, Aristotle\, Epicurus\, Epictetus and many others simply gave lectures about their favorite topics and engaged in Socratic discussions with people interested in what they had to say. In our case\, we will examine the theory and practice of Stoicism as a modern applied philosophy that aids us in navigating a world in some ways just as confusing and uncertain as that of ancient Athens and Rome.

SUMMARY:Jessica Valenti and Jaclyn Friedman: Believe Me
DESCRIPTION:Harvey Weinstein. Brett Kavanaugh. Jeffrey Epstein. Donald Trump. The most infamous abusers in modern American history are being outed as women speak up to publicly expose behavior that was previously only whispered about — and it’s both making an impact\, and sparking a backlash. If we take women’s experiences of online harassment seriously\, it will transform the internet. If we listen to and center survivors\, we could revolutionize our systems of justice. If we believe Black women when they talk about pain\, we will save countless lives. \nMoira Donegan is a writer and feminist living in New York. SUMMARY:Lequeu\, Exceptional Draftsman?
DESCRIPTION:If it were not for his drawings at the Bibliothèque nationale de France\, Jean-Jacques Lequeu would be a simple footnote in the history of late eighteenth-century French architecture.  Lequeu’s drawings reflect the way architects of his generation tended to rely more heavily on graphic communication than on textual or theoretical means of expressing their ideas.  Lequeu established a specific and original dialogue between text and image that allowed him to question and distort the graphic language set by his colleagues. Join Basile C. Baudez\, Assistant Professor at Princeton University\, for a presentation contextualizing Lequeu’s production in the history of architectural draftsmanship and to uncover the reasons why he remains one of the most fascinating artists of his time. \nThe exhibition Jean-Jacques Lequeu: Visionary Architect. Drawings from the Bibliothèque nationale de France will be open at 5:30 PM for program attendees.

SUMMARY:The Hard Problem of Consciousness: Philosophical Discussion\, TED Circle
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, one of the toughest nuts to crack in both philosophy and science has been the so-called “hard problem of consciousness”: How is it possible for the hard-wiring of our brain to produce inner perception\, sentient experience\, and self-awareness? \nIt’s a much more difficult conundrum to solve than one might expect upon first glance. \nBecause science is inherently objective\, while consciousness is subjective\, it has been very difficult for experts working from both sides of the divide to bridge this gap – to explain the precise mechanisms of conscious experience. \nBefore arriving at this event\, take a peek at the following video: \n“How Do You Explain Consciousness?” – David Chalmers – https://youtu.be/uhRhtFFhNzQ \nA brief presentation will be given to start this event – summarizing some of the prevailing research and viewpoints on the Hard Problem of Consciousness. \nWe will then explore a number of interesting extensions of this topic together. \nPLEASE FEEL FREE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ACTIVE DISCUSSION\, OR SIMPLY COME TO LISTEN – based upon your own comfort level with this topic and its many facets. This is a highly complex subject\, and everyone is most welcome to join us at this event!

SUMMARY:Philippe Lançon on Disturbance: Surviving Charlie Hebdo
DESCRIPTION:Writer and Charlie Hebdo columnist Philippe Lançon survived the last day of his life—January 7\, 2015. But his jaw\, mangled by a terrorist’s bullet\, required countless operations and long hospital stays to repair. Throughout months of reconstructive surgeries\, he turned to Kafka\, Mann\, and Proust to better understand who he’s become and remember who he was before the attack. \nDisturbance: Surviving Charlie Hebdo\, translated from the French by Steven Rendall\, is Lançon’s powerful and award-winning memoir of his grueling medical struggle and emotional recovery. As part of his first U.S. tour\, he will speak to writer Dinaw Mengestu and Michael Reynolds\, editor-in-chief of Europa Editions\, about why literature was an essential part of his remarkable and transformative journey.

SUMMARY:The Big Thaw: Ancient Carbon\, Modern Science\, and a Race to Save the World
DESCRIPTION:Permafrost—dark\, ice-flaked\, permanently frozen ground that lies under tundra and boreal forests across our northern regions—covers more than 12 percent of the earth’s land surface. It exists in places that seem otherworldly and unimaginably remote to most of us\, but the changes taking place in the permafrost layer may ultimately affect the lives of every person on Earth. \nThe permafrost layer contains a vast store of ancient carbon\, more than four times the quantity found in all of today’s forests. It is like a ticking “carbon bomb”\, releasing carbon dioxide and methane as the permafrost thaws. Braving hordes of mosquitoes\, quicksand\, and extreme temperatures\, researchers are racing against the clock to educate us about the changes we must make to preserve Earth’s carbon balance. \nArctic scientist Max Holmes and photographer Chris Linder will share stories about their work studying and photographing thawing permafrost in Siberia and the Arctic. Their new book The Big Thaw: Ancient Carbon\, Modern Science\, and a Race to Save the World will be available for purchase and signing after the presentation.

SUMMARY:Unmasking Mengele
DESCRIPTION:One of the most notorious war criminals of all time\, Dr. Josef Mengele has come to symbolize both the evil of the Nazi regime and the failure of justice in the postwar world. \nDrawing on new scholarship and sources\, historian David G. Marwell examines Mengele’s life and career\, chronicling his university studies\, which led to two PhDs and a promising career as a scientist; his wartime service\, in combat and at Auschwitz\, where his “selections” determined the fate of countless innocents and his “scientific” pursuits resulted in the traumatization and death of thousands more; and his postwar refuge in Germany and South America. Mengele describes the international search in 1985\, which ended in a cemetery in São Paulo\, Brazil\, and the dogged forensic investigation that produced overwhelming evidence that Mengele had died—but failed to convince those who\, arguably\, most wanted him dead. This is a story of science without limits\, escape without freedom\, and resolution without justice. \nA book signing follows the event.
