DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \nSince the first “test tube baby” was born over 40 years ago\, In Vitro Fertilization and other Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ARTs) have advanced in extraordinary ways\, producing millions of babies. The possibilities of this rapidly developing technology are astounding–especially in the United States. As these possibilities are increasingly realized\, physicians in many specialties\, from OB/GYN and pediatrics to genetics\, internal medicine and psychiatry\, along with potential parents and policymakers\, face complex and critical questions about the use–or possible misuse–of ARTs. Designing Babies: How Technology is Changing the Ways We Create Children confronts these questions\, examining the medical\, ethical\, social\, and policy concerns surrounding reproductive technologies. Based on in-depth interviews with providers and patients\, Robert Klitzman explores how physicians and patients are facing quandaries of whether\, when\, and how to use ARTs. Abdulfattah\, PhD Candidate in Islamic Art and Archaeology at Universität Bonn\, for a visual journey into the riches of the art and architecture of this important metropolis. \nWhen the Fatimid dynasty conquered Egypt in 969 AD\, they founded a fortified palatine city to serve as their new administrative center. This new city\, named al-Qahira – meaning “The Victorious” – gave the present capital its name. \nSince the 10th century\, Cairo has served as a major center of the Islamicate world and seat of several important dynasties\, reaching its apogee under the Mamluks (1250-1516 AD)\, who gave it an architectural character that symbolized the image of the Islamic city for centuries. These empires also left behind a staggering number of impressive buildings meant to emphasize courtly patronage and dominate the panorama of the city\, lending Cairo the nickname of the City of 1\,000 Minarets. \nToday\, more than 400 extant registered historic Islamic monuments survive tucked away amid the modern urban sprawl\, many of which remain largely overshadowed by their more ancient counterparts. \n___ \nEntry to this event is not guaranteed with Eventbrite reservation. DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence has brought us many useful technologies\, but true machine intelligence remains elusive.  Nothing besides the human mind has the flexible\, general-purpose common sense that we use from very early in development.  How can we capture human intelligence in engineering terms\, and what are the prospects for someday building machines that are as smart as we are?  Join Dr. Joshua B. Tenenbaum\, Professor of Computational Cognitive Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and 2019 MacArthur Fellow\, to explore the mathematics of minds\, both natural and artificial.  Dr. Tenenbaum will discuss recent results and insights that come from building models of core human common sense; introduce state-of-the-art mathematical concepts from probability\, programming\, and simulation; and share practical examples of how these tools let us predict and explain our own minds’ workings and ultimately let us build AI systems that come ever closer to human-like intelligence.

After a mother gives birth\, her brain and body change in ways that enable her to care for the new life. Bianca Jones Marlin examines the brain dynamics behind these changes\, some of which are ‘remembered’ in the genes and passed down for generations. In her talk\, she will challenge the age-old concept of ‘nature vs. nurture’ and show how a bridge between learned and innate animal behaviors is built. Audience members will also have an opportunity to participate using their senses to explore the real-time effects of neurochemicals in social learning. \nMarlin is a neuroscientist and postdoctoral researcher at Columbia University in the laboratory of Nobel Laureate Richard Axel\, where she investigates how traumatic experiences in parents affect the brain structure of their offspring. She holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience from New York University and dual bachelor’s degrees in biology and adolescent education from St. John’s University. As a graduate student\, her research focused on the vital bond between parent and child\, and she studied the use of neurochemicals\, such as the “love drug” oxytocin\, as a treatment to strengthen fragile and broken parent-child relationships. \nMarlin aims to utilize neurobiology and the science of learning to better inform both the scientific and educational community on how positive experiences dictate brain health\, academic performance and social well-being.
