SUMMARY:The Crossword Show with Zach Sherwin
DESCRIPTION:The Crossword Show is a live comedy performance hosted by Zach Sherwin (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend\,” “Epic Rap Battles of History”)\, in which a panel of guest entertainers solves an actual crossword puzzle onstage in front of an audience\, with everything displayed on a big screen so the crowd can follow along. \n  \nEvery time the solvers decipher a clue\, Zach launches the show down a rabbit hole that’s somehow related to the answer word. There’s a multimedia slide presentation\, tons of comedy\, wordplay\, and pop-culture trivia\, and even a musical element: while the clues work like those in a normal crossword puzzle\, they also happen to be rhyming hip-hop lyrics. You’ll laugh. You’ll be dazzled by the connections between the words and themes of the puzzle. You’ll even leave feeling like you learned something. And you ABSOLUTELY do not need to be a crossword enthusiast to be enthralled by this unique\, joyful experience! \n  \nSOLVERS:\nAparna Nancherla (Bojack Horseman\, Comedy Central)\nJoe Firestone (Shrill\, The Tonight Show)\nMike Brown (Adult Swim\, NBC)

SUMMARY:HBO’s The Plot Against America: A Screening and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:A sneak preview of David Simon’s chilling adaptation of the Philip Roth masterpiece that follows the plight of a working-class Jewish family after Charles Lindbergh wins the Presidency and turns the country toward isolationism\, xenophobia\, and fascism. \nSimon and cast members will sit for a conversation after a screening of the first hour of the six-part miniseries\, which premieres on March 16. The conversation will be moderated by NPR’s Peter Sagal. \nSet in 1940s New Jersey\, The Plot Against America imagines an alternate American history in which the aviation hero beats F.D.R.\, reaches a neutrality agreement with Hitler\, and leads a government program of gradually escalating anti-Semitism. At the heart of the story are Bess and Herman Levin\, two young parents grappling with what Roth called “the terror of the unforeseen” and striving to protect their sons from an increasingly hostile environment that threatens to rupture their family\, their community and their country.

SUMMARY:New York Stories: Danny Meyer
DESCRIPTION:Celebrated restaurateur Danny Meyer\, whose past and present portfolio includes classic New York City eateries such as Union Square Café\, Eleven Madison Park\, and Gramercy Tavern as well as the Shake Shack empire\, shares his own 9/11 experience as a midtown resident and business owner. As chair of the Restaurant Committee for NYC & Company in 2001\, Meyer spearheaded an industry-wide initiative to breathe life back into New York City’s restaurant culture; a dual mission to serve a devastated city and keep the industry afloat. SUMMARY:The Mathematics of Intelligence\, Natural and Artificial\, with Dr. Joshua B. Tenenbaum
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence has brought us many useful technologies\, but true machine intelligence remains elusive.  Nothing besides the human mind has the flexible\, general-purpose common sense that we use from very early in development.  How can we capture human intelligence in engineering terms\, and what are the prospects for someday building machines that are as smart as we are?  Join Dr. Joshua B. Tenenbaum\, Professor of Computational Cognitive Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and 2019 MacArthur Fellow\, to explore the mathematics of minds\, both natural and artificial.  Dr. Tenenbaum will discuss recent results and insights that come from building models of core human common sense; introduce state-of-the-art mathematical concepts from probability\, programming\, and simulation; and share practical examples of how these tools let us predict and explain our own minds’ workings and ultimately let us build AI systems that come ever closer to human-like intelligence.

SUMMARY:How Biased Are We? A Conversation About Perception\, Cognition\, and Accuracy
DESCRIPTION:Deutsches Haus at NYU\, University Alliance Ruhr\, and the German Research Foundation (DFG) present a conversation among Emily Balcetis (NYU)\, Lee Jussim (Rutgers University)\, and Albert Newen (Ruhr-University Bochum) as moderator\, exploring the concept of human perception and its inherent biases that affect our understanding of the world. \nAbout the event:\nPerceptions are the window to our world. Rather than merely producing a snapshot\, our brains actively create our experiences when we perceive objects or persons. Given that background knowledge and biases shape the ways in which we understand the world\, can we ever trust our perceptual experiences? To what extent can we rely on science to correct our view of the world since sciences are also influenced by the biases of individual researchers? A panel of psychologists and philosophers will present recent research in a conversation about our capacity to adequately understand the world around us.

SUMMARY:Overdoing Democracy: Robert B. Talisse with Oliver Burkeman
DESCRIPTION:Philosopher Robert B. Talisse in conversation with Oliver Burkeman on what’s wrong with democracy and how to save it.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nThe fate of democracy is increasingly in doubt\, in America and around the world. But what if the greatest danger for democratic societies comes from within? In his insightful new book\, philosopher Robert B. Talisse reports that he has seen the enemy and it is us: we are overdoing democracy\, making every issue a political issue and every human engagement a political interaction. If we hope to save democracy\, Talisse argues\, we need to put politics in its place. Please join us for this essential discussion as Talisse is joined by The Guardian columnist Oliver Burkeman.

A world-class oncologist\, she has cared for thousands of cancer patients. Yet in her highly acclaimed new book\, The First Cell\, she asks why so little progress has been made in diagnosing and treating cancer over the past few decades. Despite all the hype to the contrary\, she says\, we have lost the war on cancer. We spend $150 billion each year treating it—yet succeed in most cases in adding mere months to a patient’s life at agonizing physical and financial cost. \nSo what are the alternatives? Join her for a profoundly illuminating\, realistic\, and positive conversation about her book and about how we should move forward in treating cancer with science\, wisdom\, and grace.

DESCRIPTION:The shots that rang out on a frigid Boston evening in March 1770 almost launched a revolution after British soldiers killed five colonists in cold blood. What exactly led to the incident has never been fully understood\, yet to the city’s angry residents\, there was only one possible outcome. \nA young attorney named John Adams\, however\, refused to allow his revolutionary zeal to overshadow the rule of law. Determined that the soldiers’ trial be fair\, the man who would become America’s second president defended them\, establishing principles that would soon become enshrined in our law. \nIn the riveting prose of Dan Abrams and David Fisher\, that trial becomes more than a historical footnote. As in their previous bestselling presidential legal historical tomes\, Abrams and Fisher use an original transcript from the trial to transport readers back in time\, capturing the integrity of a man who would help shape a nation. \nModerated by Megyn Kelly\, attorney and former anchor on Fox News and NBC. \n$30 includes a copy of the book

SUMMARY:Unrealism: New Figurative Painting
DESCRIPTION:Figuration is one of the oldest art forms\, but it continually evolves\, along with our changing understanding of human identity. Aria Dean\, Sam McKinniss\, Ebecho Muslimova A’10\, and Tschabalala Self discuss contemporary figurative painting of the last five years in a free\, public event. Alison Gingeras moderates. \nThe featured artists often source imagery from the Internet\, and draw on aesthetics developed in Internet-first channels. Digital techniques and affordances are incorporated into rendering processes with traditional media: brushstrokes are more precise\, lines are sharper\, and color is more highly keyed. In these works\, expressionism is located more in the composition than in the paint handling. \nThis event launches Rizzoli’s Unrealism: New Figurative Painting. Copies will be available for sale by The Strand.

SUMMARY:Can Time Heal Anything? Lee Mingwei and Dr. Lila Davachi
DESCRIPTION:What lingers in your heart after a loved one is lost? And what can this teach us about the ephemerality of life? \nIn his work The Letter Writing Project\, part of the Rubin’s exhibition Measure Your Existence\, artist Lee Mingwei invites visitors to pen a letter to a lost or absent loved one. The cathartic act of writing the unsaid is twofold\, as other museum visitors can choose to read the unsealed letters left at the installation. To further explore the mechanics of grief\, Lee takes the Brainwave stage with Dr. Lila Davachi to discuss the physical and mental experience of our own impermanence. \n

SUMMARY:The Science of Love
DESCRIPTION:Simons Foundation Presents Free Event: The Science of Love\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nNothing is more treasured — and mysterious — than the bond between mother and child. After a mother gives birth\, her brain and body change in ways that enable her to care for the new life. Bianca Jones Marlin examines the brain dynamics behind these changes\, some of which are ‘remembered’ in the genes and passed down for generations. In her talk\, she will challenge the age-old concept of ‘nature vs. nurture’ and show how a bridge between learned and innate animal behaviors is built. Audience members will also have an opportunity to participate using their senses to explore the real-time effects of neurochemicals in social learning. \nMarlin is a neuroscientist and postdoctoral researcher at Columbia University in the laboratory of Nobel Laureate Richard Axel\, where she investigates how traumatic experiences in parents affect the brain structure of their offspring. She holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience from New York University and dual bachelor’s degrees in biology and adolescent education from St. John’s University. As a graduate student\, her research focused on the vital bond between parent and child\, and she studied the use of neurochemicals\, such as the “love drug” oxytocin\, as a treatment to strengthen fragile and broken parent-child relationships. \nMarlin aims to utilize neurobiology and the science of learning to better inform both the scientific and educational community on how positive experiences dictate brain health\, academic performance and social well-being. Her research has been featured in the Los Angeles Times\, The Guardian and Scientific American and as one of Discover magazine’s “100 Top Stories of 2015.” \nSCHEDULE \n6:00 – 6:30 pm Doors open \n6:30 – 7:30 pm Talk + Q&A \n7:30 – 8:30 pm Refreshments

SUMMARY:Culture Of: Intimacy
DESCRIPTION:A Deep Dive Into The Spectrum Of Connection\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nWhen you read the word: intimacy what comes to mind? Is it something sexual? Something funny? Something sad? Fact. Nearly half of Americans have experienced deeper intimacy in their dreams than in real life. In nonfiction’s “Intimacy In America” Report\, 21% of Americans say they have no one in their lives they can be 100% themselves with. We’re craving intimate connections and yet avoiding them like the plague. Vulnerability seems to be “on trend” but when “everyone’s doing it\,” it almost feels inauthentic. Yeah…we feel that too. But we think there’s a better way. \nCome get comfortable with intimacy. Intimacy requires us to know ourselves before we can connect with another and ultimate with those around us. We’re exploring the spectrum of connection in three ways: self\, one-to-one and community. We’ll start with a few curated experiences then hear from dope speakers from all walks of life. A spoken word playwrighting wordsmith\, a painter\, an ex-dating coach\, an author and some surprises along the way. \nLocation \nA mansion filled with art. So yes we’re psyched. \nFood Partner \nDos Toros brings the best of the San Francisco taqueria experience to the rest of the country.

SUMMARY:The First AI Simulation of the Universe is Fast and Accurate — and We Don’t Know Why
DESCRIPTION:A full understanding of the evolution of the universe’s structure is one of the holy grails of modern astrophysics. Astrophysicists survey large volumes of the universe and compare the findings to computer simulations. Simulating the movement of billions of particles over billions of years is a daunting task\, however\, even when using the simplest physical models. \nIn this lecture\, Shirley Ho will discuss her team’s work building a deep neural network that learns from a set of pre-run numerical simulations and predicts the large scale structure of the universe. Extensive analysis demonstrates that their deep-learning technique outperforms the commonly used fast approximate simulation method in predicting cosmic structure in the non-linear regime. They also show that their method can accurately extrapolate far beyond its training data and predict structure formation for significantly different cosmological parameters. This ability to extrapolate outside its training set is highly unexpected and remains a mystery. \n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\nHo’s research interests have ranged from fundamental cosmological measurements to exoplanet statistics to using machine learning to estimate how much dark matter is in the universe.
