SUMMARY:We Are The Weather: Jonathan Safran Foer with Aminatou Sow
DESCRIPTION:In We Are the Weather: Saving the Planet Begins at Breakfast\, Jonathan Safran Foer explores the central global dilemma of our time in a surprising\, deeply personal\, and urgent new way. The task of saving the planet will involve a great reckoning with ourselves—with our all-too-human reluctance to sacrifice immediate comfort for the sake of the future. We have\, he reveals\, turned our planet into a farm for growing animal products\, and the consequences are catastrophic. Only collective action will save our home and way of life. And it all starts with what we eat—and don’t eat—for breakfast. \nJoin The New School as Jonathan Safran Foer sits down in conversation Aminatou Sow\, co-host of Call Your Girlfriend podcast and co-founder of Tech LadyMafia.

SUMMARY:Evolution & Revolution: Transforming Medicine through Comparative Genomics
DESCRIPTION:Just like species\, genes evolve over time. What can genetic evolution—both in our species and between different species—teach us about our own health? Discover the latest research on human genomes and the genomes of animals across the tree of life—and the profound implications this work has for the study of human genetics and health—with population geneticist David Reich of Harvard University\, genomic medicine researcher David Goldstein of Columbia University\, evolutionary biologist and Museum Curator Frank Burbrink\, and neurogeneticist Mimi Shirasu-Hiza of Columbia University\, moderated by New York Times science journalist Pam Belluck. \nExplore how natural selection works at a genomic level and how a fruit fly can provide insights into human diseases. Experts reveal how comparing genomes of closely related primate species\, and even extinct Neanderthals\, can reveal the immune profile of other species and advance understanding of disease resistance and adaptation. Learn about the latest genomic sequencing technologies that are allowing a wider range of species to be sequenced faster and cheaper. \nThis program is presented as part of the 150th Anniversary Milstein Science Symposium.

SUMMARY:The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Film Screening & Author Talk with Joseph Lanza
DESCRIPTION:When Tobe Hooper’s low-budget slasher film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre opened in theaters in 1974\, it was met in equal measure with loathing and reverence. The film was banned in several countries and was pulled from many American theaters after complaints of its violence. Despite the mixed reception from critics\, it was enormously profitable at the domestic box office and has since secured its place as one of the most influential horror movies ever made. \nIn The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: The Film That Rattled a Terrified Nation\, author and cultural critic Joseph Lanza turns his attention to the production\, reception\, social climate\, and impact of this controversial movie that rattled the American public. \nThe Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Rated R) will be screened in its entirety followed by a Q&A with Mr. Lanza. The author will have limited copies of his new book for sale and signing.

SUMMARY:Olio Breakfast Club | Frankenstein: Who is the Monster?
DESCRIPTION:For this Olio Breakfast Club with Baruch College Professor Patricia Kim\, we’ll meet for brunch at Three’s Brewing and take a deep dive into Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to discuss the human compulsion for scientific knowledge and some of its cultural consequences. \nSome questions to think about: Who is the monster? In what ways are you\, the reader\, asked to reflect on\, if not interrogated about your moral obligations? How so? What can we do—both individually and collectively—to empower ourselves in a landscape that actively works to uproot the possibility of lasting change? \n

SUMMARY:Inflammation and the Keto Diet
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Will Cole and Dan Churchill for a conversation on inflammation and the keto diet. \nAs the international bestselling author of Ketotarian\, co-host of The Goopfellas Podcast\, and leading functional medicine expert\, Dr. Will Cole discovered that inflammation is at the core of most common health problems. In his newest book\, THE INFLAMMATION SPECTRUM: Find Your Food Triggers and Reset Your System\, he reveals this issue exists on a continuum with mild symptoms like weight gain and fatigue on one end and hormone imbalance and autoimmune conditions on the other. What moves you in one direction or another is extremely personal. One person’s food medicine is another person’s food trigger. \nDuring this panel discussion\, Dr. Cole and Dan Churchill\, the chef of Under Armour and co-founder of Charley St in NYC\, will teach you how to combat inflammation and put you on a permanent path towards healing.  Other panel topics include: the keto diet (regular and plant based)\, intermittent fasting and hormone effects in women.

SUMMARY:Antisocial: Andrew Marantz (Author Event)
DESCRIPTION:In the Rare Book Room at The Strand bookstore\, author (and staff writer at The New Yorker) Andrew Marantz will discuss his new book\, Antisocial: Online Extremists\, Techno-Utopians\, and the Hijacking of the American Conversation. \nAntisocial reveals how the boundaries between technology\, media\, and politics have been erased\, resulting in a deeply broken informational landscape–the landscape in which we all now live. Marantz shows how alienated young people are led down the rabbit hole of online radicalization\, and how fringe ideas spread–from anonymous corners of social media to cable TV to the President’s Twitter feed. Marantz also sits with the creators of social media as they start to reckon with the forces they’ve unleashed. Will they be able to solve the communication crisis they helped bring about\, or are their interventions too little too late?

SUMMARY:Primo Levi and Friendship in the Camp
DESCRIPTION:Uri Cohen: Affection and Survival: Primo Levi and Friendship in the Camp \nAffection is a lesser known aspect of the human and Jewish experience in the camps. Mostly it is related to the fractured past of which the camp is the present. Having written some of the essential pages on the human experience in the Lager\, Primo Levi continued contemplating and writing about it throughout his life. This talk will question affection in Levi’s writing and its place in the camp as a strategy of survival. Affection saves\, but it also prompts Levi’s internal inquiry that leads to the heart of his defining conceptual innovation: the Gray Zone. \nUri S. Cohen holds a PhD. from the Hebrew University and has served on the faculty of Columbia University (2004-2011).

DESCRIPTION:This Olio event – with professor Jamie Warren of BMCC-CUNY – will explore this mercurial creature\, the Devil-God Desire. Through a close reading of Anne Carson’s work Eros: The Bittersweet\, we will question how we have come to believe that love requires the number two\, when logic demonstrates that the answer is three. Triangles\, not lines\, are the vehicles for our most precious longings and the engineers of our most devastating voids.

SUMMARY:The Chemistry of Chemistry: How Hormones Affect Romance and Relationships
DESCRIPTION:Why do you do the things you do? Hormones play a surprising role in everyday life (beyond just pimples and emotions)\, from what shirt you wear to how many skateboard tricks you do.\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Dr. Adar Eisenbruch will pursue the theory that hormones are signals that orchestrate our brains and bodies for particular goals. For example\, we’ll look at how testosterone (in men) and estradiol and progesterone (in women) regulate — and are regulated by — mating behavior. From flirting to taking care of a baby\, and everything in between\, your hormones might be pulling the string. \n\n\n\n\n\nAdar Eisenbruch received a PhD in Psychological and Brain Sciences from the University of California\, Santa Barbara\, completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University and was an Associate Researcher at Future Laboratories.
