SUMMARY:Inflammation and the Keto Diet
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Will Cole and Dan Churchill for a conversation on inflammation and the keto diet. \nAs the international bestselling author of Ketotarian\, co-host of The Goopfellas Podcast\, and leading functional medicine expert\, Dr. Will Cole discovered that inflammation is at the core of most common health problems. In his newest book\, THE INFLAMMATION SPECTRUM: Find Your Food Triggers and Reset Your System\, he reveals this issue exists on a continuum with mild symptoms like weight gain and fatigue on one end and hormone imbalance and autoimmune conditions on the other. What moves you in one direction or another is extremely personal. One person’s food medicine is another person’s food trigger. \nDuring this panel discussion\, Dr. Cole and Dan Churchill\, the chef of Under Armour and co-founder of Charley St in NYC\, will teach you how to combat inflammation and put you on a permanent path towards healing.  Other panel topics include: the keto diet (regular and plant based)\, intermittent fasting and hormone effects in women.

SUMMARY:Antisocial: Andrew Marantz (Author Event)
DESCRIPTION:In the Rare Book Room at The Strand bookstore\, author (and staff writer at The New Yorker) Andrew Marantz will discuss his new book\, Antisocial: Online Extremists\, Techno-Utopians\, and the Hijacking of the American Conversation. \nAntisocial reveals how the boundaries between technology\, media\, and politics have been erased\, resulting in a deeply broken informational landscape–the landscape in which we all now live. Marantz shows how alienated young people are led down the rabbit hole of online radicalization\, and how fringe ideas spread–from anonymous corners of social media to cable TV to the President’s Twitter feed. Marantz also sits with the creators of social media as they start to reckon with the forces they’ve unleashed. Will they be able to solve the communication crisis they helped bring about\, or are their interventions too little too late?

SUMMARY:Primo Levi and Friendship in the Camp
DESCRIPTION:Uri Cohen: Affection and Survival: Primo Levi and Friendship in the Camp \nAffection is a lesser known aspect of the human and Jewish experience in the camps. Mostly it is related to the fractured past of which the camp is the present. Having written some of the essential pages on the human experience in the Lager\, Primo Levi continued contemplating and writing about it throughout his life. This talk will question affection in Levi’s writing and its place in the camp as a strategy of survival. Affection saves\, but it also prompts Levi’s internal inquiry that leads to the heart of his defining conceptual innovation: the Gray Zone. \nUri S. Cohen holds a PhD. from the Hebrew University and has served on the faculty of Columbia University (2004-2011).

DESCRIPTION:This Olio event – with professor Jamie Warren of BMCC-CUNY – will explore this mercurial creature\, the Devil-God Desire. Through a close reading of Anne Carson’s work Eros: The Bittersweet\, we will question how we have come to believe that love requires the number two\, when logic demonstrates that the answer is three. SUMMARY:The Chemistry of Chemistry: How Hormones Affect Romance and Relationships
DESCRIPTION:Why do you do the things you do? Hormones play a surprising role in everyday life (beyond just pimples and emotions)\, from what shirt you wear to how many skateboard tricks you do.\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Dr. Adar Eisenbruch will pursue the theory that hormones are signals that orchestrate our brains and bodies for particular goals. For example\, we’ll look at how testosterone (in men) and estradiol and progesterone (in women) regulate — and are regulated by — mating behavior. From flirting to taking care of a baby\, and everything in between\, your hormones might be pulling the string. \n\n\n\n\n\nAdar Eisenbruch received a PhD in Psychological and Brain Sciences from the University of California\, Santa Barbara\, completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University and was an Associate Researcher at Future Laboratories.

SUMMARY:Doctors Without Boundaries: ER Docs and Comedians Break Down Medical Stigmas
DESCRIPTION:Real-life ER doctors Andres Mallipudi and Darien Sutton welcome chronically over-sharing comedians to tell stories of their weirdest diagnoses. The Doctors then do what they wish they had time to do with their patients: break down the insane history of how the medical community has treated that condition\, why that condition has been stigmatized\, and the real facts you should know when dealing with the condition yourself. \nThis show is a healthy hypochondriac’s dream complete with a “No Co-Pay” question box so that you can ask the doctors your own embarrassing medical questions. \nYou’ll leave feeling better with the real facts about scary diagnoses\, helpful tips on how to advocate for yourself at your next doctor’s appointment\, and of course\, having laughed in sickness’s face.

SUMMARY:The Social\, Cultural\, and Political Impact of the Mindfulness Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Recent decades have seen nothing short of a Mindfulness Revolution in Western Society. Meditative disciplines that originated in ancient Buddhist practice have come to have a strong influence in Western psychotherapy\, neuroscience\, art\, social justice\, and more. A serious meditator is even among the candidates for US President in 2020\, and we’re not even talking about Marianne Williamson! \nAnd yet\, what is the impact of all this? Is the Mindfulness Movement just “McMindfulness” as some wary critics have argued? Is it just a consumeristic fad? Or is there a deeper social transformation happening here? \nJoin Buddhist teachers David and Ethan Nichtern at Tibet House for a lively discussion of how far mindfulness has come in our society\, and how far it has yet to go.

SUMMARY:Bill Bryson\, The Body: A Guide for Occupants
DESCRIPTION:Bill Bryson once again proves himself to be an incomparable companion with The Body: A Guide for Occupants\, as he guides us through the human body–how it functions\, its remarkable ability to heal itself\, and (unfortunately) the ways it can fail. Full of extraordinary facts (your body made a million red blood cells since you started reading this) and irresistible Bryson-esque anecdotes\, The Body will lead you to a deeper understanding of the miracle that is life in general and you in particular. As Bill Bryson writes\, “We pass our existence within this wobble of flesh and yet take it almost entirely for granted.” The Body will cure that indifference with generous doses of wondrous\, compulsively readable facts and information. \nJoin us at the Cooper Union’s Great Hall for an evening as one of the great raconteurs takes us on a tour of our own insides!

SUMMARY:The Big Fella: Babe Truth and the World He Created
DESCRIPTION:In the 1920s\, Babe Ruth was the biggest thing in baseball—and in America’s galaxy of celebrities. He swung the heaviest bat\, earned the most money\, and incurred the largest fines. After hitting his 60th home run in September 1927\, he and teammate Lou Gehrig embarked on the mother of all barnstorming tours\, a three-week victory lap across America that one newspaper called “the biggest show since Ringling Brothers\, Barnum and Bailey\, and seven other associated circuses offered their entire performance under one tent.” Aided by his crucial partnership with Christy Walsh—business manager\, spin doctor\, damage-control wizard\, and surrogate father—Ruth drafted the blueprint for modern athletic stardom. Drawing on her new book\, The Big Fella: Babe Ruth and the World He Created\, Jane Leavy will discuss Ruth’s journey from Baltimore to the big league to the center of the nation’s adulation. In conversation with Yankees expert Marty Appel\, she will go behind the mythology to uncover the man whose approach to the game and to life was always to hit it with all you’ve got.

SUMMARY:Redlining and its Repercussions
DESCRIPTION:Redlining—the systematically racist banking practice of denying loans to people of color in post-WWII urban neighborhoods—is often portrayed as a closed chapter in the nation’s history of structural inequality. Yet intense discrimination persists as non-white communities face continuous exclusion from the “American Dream” of homeownership\, or are targeted by predatory lending practices\, further widening the racial wealth gap.
